With the postponement and cancellation of live events on a global scale due to COVID-19, many sport federations were left seeking ways to remain engaged with fans.
UEFA’s club and national team competitions were halted in early March 2020, and the global lockdown presented UEFA with an opportunity to engage with new and existing audiences on UEFA.tv.
UEFA decided to leverage its digital archive to continue to bring football to fans by streaming classic matches “as live” on UEFA.tv. By resurfacing iconic club and national team encounters on a free-to-view basis, UEFA.tv’s coverage served to keep existing users engaged, while also acquiring new fans in parallel.
The “(RE)Live” classic series was comprised of 63 matches across a 12-week period from March 24th to June 12th, 2020. UEFA.tv featured a weekly schedule with competitions assigned to specific days to mirror the cadence of live football match weeks and events. Each “live” match was also made available for on-demand viewing. As the end of the 12-week period approached, great knockout stage and competition finals were streamed to simulate a ‘real-time’ tournament-like scenario.
