Build on that success.<\/li>\n<li>Can we put a more formalised approach within our organisations for mentorship and sharing of knowledge between more experienced coaches and those starting their journey?<\/li>\n<li>Create and design experiential workshops for departments based around specific challenges they are facing and foster a mindset of creative problem-solving.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Group Challenges Surrounding Personal Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Continuing to find opportunities for those at the top of their field to keep influencing their development \u2013 how can we get them to continue to learn from others even though they are now the \u2018teachers\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>There is a fear in some sports around the exposure of weaknesses \u2013 how do we foster that vulnerability for them to understand what to work on themselves?<\/li>\n<li>Combining the financial resource for professional development with organisational KPIs \u2013 how can we better measure success of this across the wider organisation?<\/li>\n<li>How can we make our resources pushed out to our people more engaging?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can you be creative with retired or very experienced coaches coming to the end of their career? Consider placing them in the field to support and mentor those who are earlier on in their journey to share wisdom.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to help your people build their own networks. For example, if you are in the Olympic movement, exposing those with similar job functions to others in different sports.<\/li>\n<li>You have to customise opportunities dependent on where people are in their career and where they want to go.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to make development a mainstay of your culture \u2013 do you run \u2018Staff Development Clinic \/ Workshops\u2019 within your environment to bring everyone together to share their insight?<\/li>\n<li>To instil the vulnerability for people to open up and share what they want to develop and work on is so important. It can be perceived as a threat to their jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Have you got an individual or department within your organisation available for those who want to work on developing themselves? Are you giving them the tools to succeed in this?<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t underestimate the power of departmental workshops. It\u2019s an approach of \u2018we are all in this together\u2019 and specific to that team \u2013 it\u2019s a great way of fostering connection to everyone.<\/li>\n<li>In some sports there is a lack of appetite for development as the sport or organisation moves so fast \u2013 so it\u2019s important culturally to ensure there is an appetite and resource available for people when the time comes.<\/li>\n<li>There is an education piece to other stakeholders on the importance of people development.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a set of guiding principles that incorporate the importance of people development? This is a great starting point to get people to buy-in from the beginning.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important for everyone to have an individual development plan (IDP). These can consist of two pillars that are aligned to the goals for the year: 1. Internal at the organisation (on the job). 2. Outside the box \u2013 what do you want to do to develop as a person?<\/li>\n<li>Do you get everyone together monthly to discuss podcasts, articles, people you\u2019ve met that could influence the team in some capacity? Off the back of this, consider pairing people up for accountability.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Coaching your coaches\u2019 is a great way of making people development more engaging. Have coaches coach and share with other coaches in your environment.<\/li>\n<li>Consider how staff development can impact the athletes. If the development of your staff becomes stale, this can impact the performance of your athletes.<\/li>\n<li>Our athletes are the best in the world and they are constantly seeking development and learning, so why should this be any different for our staff?
