psychological elements of talent further down the pathway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recommended Reading &amp; Listening: Leaders Performance Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/ten-key-takeaways-talent-lab\/\">Ten Key Takeaways from The Talent Lab<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/az-alkmaar-marijn-beuker\/\">Why AZ Alkmaar Think it is Important to Listen to Football\u2019s \u2018Whispering Talents\u2019 When Competing With Better-Resourced Rivals<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/collingwood-marcus-wagner\/\">How the AFL\u2019s Collingwood Removes the Inevitable Anxieties of Drafted Young Players<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Future Thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Better influencing decision-making and perceptual skills within our talent pathways \u2013 create chaos sessions to measure behavioural change.<\/li>\n<li>Psychological scouting as a way of supporting the technical, tactical and physical elements of this process.<\/li>\n<li>Profiling both athlete and coach to find better alignment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Talent Identification: what are our current challenges or what is currently on our minds when thinking about this topic?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s important to have a \u2018what it takes to win model\u2019 to inform and develop the performance pathway \u2013 what is it we are looking for?<\/li>\n<li>What are the key KPIs are transition points that show us that the pathway is doing what it is supposed to be doing?<\/li>\n<li>How do you marker behavioural progression and not just the obvious elements such as technical, tactical and physical?<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about behavioural progression, consider artificially creating an environment to bring some of the behaviours we want, to see whether they exist.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s an interest in better understanding and validating perceptual and decision-making skills beyond the observations of match play.<\/li>\n<li>We have to continue to evolve our player profiles and also consider how we evaluate those early scouting observations.<\/li>\n<li>What separates the good from the great?<\/li>\n<li>Identifying talent isn\u2019t overly difficult, but the real challenge is determining those who could be good or those who could be great.<\/li>\n<li>There is an opportunity for us to do better in identifying and evaluating the psychological \/ mental aspects in this process.<\/li>\n<li>In a lot of sports, we are using junior results as a measure \u2013 in some cases these can be really strong predictors, but there will always be a large pool of athletes who don\u2019t have those junior results who go on to be successful. How can we better work to identify these \u2018hidden gems\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>Can we better use our coaching community to see potential talent a number of times in competition and training to give it an evaluation? If we can collate a mass of different views, that will give us a better critical mass to analyse results vs. potential.<\/li>\n<li>Consider \u2018psychological scouting\u2019 \u2013 it\u2019s something that has been used in Olympic programmes to understand those who have the resilience and potential to perform under pressure when it matters most.<\/li>\n<li>This is also a handy process to implement within your pathway, especially with development teams who are looking to progress into our main setups.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of questioning the decisions that our athletes make, focus and look to glean insight into the experiences they have had. A lot of psychological scouting is about observation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>How are we looking to impact these challenges and thoughts?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you athletes strong when it comes to being goal-focused and are they capable of taking the actions necessary to attempt to achieve these? These are areas of interest when considering behavioural progression within the pathway.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s also important to consider self-awareness and the impact that the individual can have on the environment and the bigger picture or vision.<\/li>\n<li>In sport we often develop system athletes \u2013 it\u2019s often systems that we have designed, but this isn\u2019t a highly unlikely occurrence in an open environment such as competition. Create chaos sessions to support this and influence decision-making skills.<\/li>\n<li>Try to not solely rely on scouting but also use opportunities to observe in other environments, which may be camp-based environments where you have the opportunity to be more creative with that element of control.<\/li>\n<li>The job in talent ID is not to guarantee you are going to get it right, but reduce how often you get it wrong.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure you have the right coaching expertise in the pathway. Have you got the right coaching in place? Often the main thing the talent has is the physiological characteristics, but the next step is to enhance the technical and tactical aspects so you\u2019re coaches are of paramount importance in this.<\/li>\n<li>Personality profiling \u2013 an interesting area is where an athlete and a coach have polar profiles.
