Measuring Coach Effectiveness: challenges &amp; how we are currently doing it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Key to point out that there is a different between measuring coach development and measuring coach effectiveness.<\/li>\n<li>The role of the coach developer is becoming more prominent, and it is generally accepted that it is the role that is used to develop coaches beyond their qualifications \u2013 but the challenge is that a number of leaders don\u2019t really know too much about it.<\/li>\n<li>The ability to provide markers is going to be incredibly important in the future for this profession. There are challenges with providing objective rigour behind work in coach development.<\/li>\n<li>Managing up is an important aspect of being a coach development leader to educate them on the impact of this role, but to also provide understanding away from just the X\u2019s and O\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li>What is your competency framework for coaches and where are they now? What processes are you using to move your coaches along and how are you measuring that?<\/li>\n<li>Tracking coach development process through annual learning and development plan. It\u2019s being more aligned to an L&amp;D \/ HR role where you work with the coaches to agree on a 12 month set of objectives and then evaluate how these can be achieved.<\/li>\n<li>Coach development activity is about learning and it takes time, and it is the change in behaviour that is observable so it\u2019s important to have checkpoints along the way to assess this behaviour.<\/li>\n<li>Having \u2018environmental pulses\u2019 or \u2018health checks\u2019 for player groups to provide direct feedback is one way of looking at it.<\/li>\n<li>You can assess coach effectiveness through a few simple columns: wins &amp; losses, player improvement and development, goal achievement, but it\u2019s important to consider analysis on the health of the environment and engagement within it.<\/li>\n<li>Considering the wider environment when thinking about coach development is a key point. Have you considered bringing in people to live and breathe everything that happens within the environment for some peer review?<\/li>\n<li>The environment that the coach creates has a huge influence on the outcome or how the athlete feels.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have Coach Development Professional Standards? This provides a framework to then allow us to map against the coach and development work for the coach can support the areas within the professional standard.<\/li>\n<li>There is another challenge and different dimension when you are working in a sport with provinces underneath the international side. The All Blacks use a pretty effective framework to assess all their coaching staff.<\/li>\n<li>The coaches needed to reach or exceed a score of 50% over a two-year cycle considering these themes: wins &amp; losses, impacting young players and reaching a certain number of test matches, compliance with national standards and then other elements including community, commercial, financial etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. What we\u2019d like it to look like and what would make this successful?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s important to have a focus on \u2018who you are as a coach\u2019 is underpinning all of the other elements that goes into coaching. Who you are is all of the environmental factors. Competency frameworks need to consider the environment as well as the other core three of performance impact, what you know and the processes.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018What does good coaching look like?\u2019 Are other leaders in the high performance environment educated enough to understand this? There may be worth in implementing training and development programmes to support this.<\/li>\n<li>Soft skills and relationships which are unmeasurable are often the most important, so education and understanding is so crucial.<\/li>\n<li>There is an opportunity to be doing more pre, post based research with players to evaluate the effectiveness of the coaches which can then be circled back into what they have been working on with the coach developers.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a \u2018how to coach framework\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>Could the concept of coach development be a touch misleading? Should we consider it more to evolve around Coach Performance &amp; Practice especially if we are assessing environment?<\/li>\n<li>Consider if you have the capability to use applications for the players to collate immediate feedback after sessions that can be tracked and quantified over a campaign.
