There will be different attributes required.<\/li>\n<li>Having a clear plan. Having a plan in your talent pathway strategy is always a good reference point for when things are going well or in some cases not so well.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a pathway that has opportunity \u2013 really important for talent to have someone to aspire to and that it is clear for them to see that.<\/li>\n<li>When you look at talent development it tends to evolve around the four pillars of technical, tactical, physical and mental. Naturally across different sports there is a standardised level of servicing with the talent coming through the pathway \u2013 it\u2019s important to be more individualised as that talent enters the pathway. It\u2019s crucial to get a more specific understanding of that athlete at this particular time.<\/li>\n<li>Strength-based approaches are effective when thinking about individualised planning (focusing on the athlete\u2019s weapon or strength) but also identifying growth areas supports a more all-rounded approach.<\/li>\n<li>There is a risk that talent can go backwards in their development if there is only focus on the growth areas or weaknesses. Important to find the right formula between the \u2018weapon &amp; growth\u2019 elements of their game.<\/li>\n<li>At the beginning of the pathway there is a challenge around some talent not understanding what is required to be professional. As high performance leaders, we need perhaps spend more time focusing on this.<\/li>\n<li>There is a challenge of where to focus attention \u2013 in some organisations there is a natural focus on those with \u2018more potential\u2019 who potentially have a better chance of making it into the first team. Where should be focus most of our attention \u2013 those who have the better chance of progressing through the pathway or those who need more developmental support?<\/li>\n<li>Integration into an existing is always challenging \u2013 have you considered using \u2018pride \/ duty of care groups\u2019 with younger talent coming into the setup where other players and staff can support?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The mental space as an area of opportunity within the talent pathway.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organisations are beginning to identify the mental space as of just as much importance as other elements of talent development earlier on in the pathway. It needs to be better resourced earlier on in the pathway planning.<\/li>\n<li>We can better educate our talent on how to approach difficult moments or stoppages in a game and where the mind goes in that space (growth mindsets).<\/li>\n<li>There is an opportunity in mental recovery, particularly after training sessions and not just in competition.<\/li>\n<li>Wellbeing is also a crucial component when thinking about the mental space in this context \u2013 there are two ways to approach it: performance psychology &amp; mental health and wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li>Mindfulness has proven to be a positive inclusion with younger talent, especially in around stressful times (exams) that may be taking place alongside training and competition etc. It\u2019s important not to force it at an early age, but it should be an offering.<\/li>\n<li>Mindfulness is becoming more popular post-sessions so that there is a sense of going home after training with the mind more at ease and relaxed.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to influence the staff around mindfulness to operate as operators and role models.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Implementing \u2018bumps in the road\u2019 during the development process.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The journey is not linear to the destination, so it\u2019s important to not make it seem plain sailing.<\/li>\n<li>Do we feel there is value in manufacturing speed bumps within our programmes? Those at the top end of the game do seem to have experienced failure during the earlier part of their journey so could integrating experiences and approaches support those who haven\u2019t experienced these yet?<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to identify what challenges are useful and not useful when looking at your pathway, but we should encourage our coaches to manufacture failure in their sessions and test the response.
