England, however, were starting to fight their way back into the contest. First, the US were spared an Ellen White equaliser by the Video Assistant Referee [VAR] who spotted an offside in the build-up, then, with just eight minutes to go, the VAR awarded England a penalty kick for a foul on White.

Alyssa Naeher’s save from Steph Houghton, the England captain, gave the Connecticut goalkeeper her calling card moment in the USWNT, but it also marked the beginning of the end for the English resistance. England defender Millie Bright was red carded moments later and that was that.

The manner in which the Americans, thinking on their feet, saw the game out to secure their fifth World Cup Final appearance evoked memories of Head Coach Jill Ellis’ appearance at the 2017 Leaders Sport Performance Summit at Soldier Field in Chicago.

That afternoon, she discussed player decision-making at crucial moments. “At some point we want them to make decisions on their own, to read the situation and execute,” said Ellis. “For the top players that’s really where the game slows down and the decisions, the actual execution, are what separates the top players in the world.”

Finding the right tool in the heat of the moment

Ellis, who has led the USWNT to consecutive World Cup triumphs, explained that there is a lot more weighing on decision-making in the modern era compared to her own playing days. “Athletes are more technical, faster, and so the decision-making has to happen a lot faster,” she said. “For us, it’s creating scenarios.” This approach is designed to enhance the players’ cognitive skills. “Sometimes you manipulate the training environment to make it slightly more intensive; so you limit their touches, and if you limit their touches now their vision has to be better because they have to see things faster. If you’re playing inter-squad you can point to one team and say, ‘OK, you’re down a player’; how do they react to it, where is the space going to be?”

That element cannot be underplayed in Ellis’ mind. “It’s very important. Going into the World Cup, you have to prepare for being down a player, being a goal down, and so you don’t want players to react instantly to that.”

The trick is to give them tools to call upon in the heat of the moment. “Certainly it’s hard to fabricate the pressure, being in front of 50,000, but we’ll put in those situations that challenge them in order to prepare them; a process to lean on when they get in the pressure cooker.”

Throughout their World Cup campaign in France, the USWNT played with a self-assurance that suggested defeat was not even on their radar. That confidence in their ability, rather than any particular playing style, set the team apart as a host of opponents succumbed in the end to American superiority.

Ellis herself seems less concerned with a playing philosophy than establishing core principles that her team can abide by because, as she sees it, these are some of the best players in the world with an ability to think on their feet. “We’re trying to play on principles, trying to read the situation,” she explains. “Rather than a fixed pattern from A to B to C we’ll say ‘when we’re attacking it’s forward when we can and back if we need’ or ‘have space and take space’. Then your players have that freedom. Ultimately, as a coach, I have very little control as the game goes on. I have 50,000 people in the stands and I can’t get information to them. So it’s really enabling or empowering these players to make decisions. You can fabricate it on the training ground but, ultimately, if we play more on principles, they can react to different situations in the changing pieces of the game.”

What Can Chess and Poker Teach Us About Decision-Making and Creativity?

Why You Should Not Be Taking the Emotion Out of Decision-Making

Leaders Performance Podcast: Decision-Making Under Pressure

Mind your language

The USWNT’s scenario training is supported by a feedback mechanism that reflects the young nature of Ellis’ squad and the desired outcome of conditioning players to think on their feet. Ellis first point on the topic relates to the generation of players sitting before her in the locker room.

“With millennials, the feedback is instant,” she observed. “We have apps and we send out video and film. I think young players, they want to get better and video is often the best tool to help young people see because then there’s no denying it.

“But this generation are invested in their learning, but it’s how you capture and captivate them. So when we do set-pieces, we don’t just do it with Xs and Os on a white board, we actually have 3D animation because the world they’re seeing is video games; it allows us the detail. Feedback and technology go hand in hand now with the new generation.”

Ellis’ coaching staff perform an essential role. There are is a clear delineation of roles and debriefs and pre-training meetings have been known to last up to four hours. “We draw a lot out of it and I try to empower coaches because a lot of these players need individual feedback and I am not always available.”

There is also the question of how and what to share so that the learning sticks and it is one Ellis has given serious consideration. “My endpoint I that I want my players to perform at their optimum and burying them [in information] is not going to make that happen, especially with a younger team” she began in response. “I’ll meet with the players and, in terms of language, instead of saying ‘don’t do that’ or ‘you shouldn’t have done that’ it’s like, ‘hey, this is fantastic. Less of this and more of that.’ That’s how you frame things. We’ll sit and watch film but it’s how you engage the player; ‘what did you see here? What were you scanning for?’ You’re trying to understand their processes in terms of what they are seeing; are they open or closed to the field? Then you can start to address nuances about the specific pass or the decision they make. It’s giving them more familiarity with seeing those situations and then discussing.”

It was a process that served Ellis and her players well in France. “A big part tied to their decision-making is an ability to handle pressure.”

Want further insight into decision-making under pressure?

What Can Chess and Poker Teach Us About Decision-Making and Creativity?

Why You Should Not Be Taking the Emotion Out of Decision-Making

Leaders Performance Podcast: Decision-Making Under Pressure

Head Coach Jill Ellis explains why her team’s self-assurance at clutch moments is no accident.

[22
["post-1156","article","type-article","status-publish","hentry","category-coaching-development-performance

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
