conditioning – all sports science started to integrate and grow in importance.

“With the work that’s being done with athlete development, the curriculum for coach education and development becomes more specific in employing all of the modalities that we have. The tactical, technical, physical, emotional, the sports sciences, social sciences – now it’s all applied along the pathway.

“This matrix of what coaching means and what the role of the coach means has expanded exponentially over time.” We explore the implication of this evolution for the USTA and the coaches it works to educate and develop along its player pathway.

What are some of the qualities needed by a modern tennis coach?

PL: It’s to have a really strong coaching and teaching philosophy that aligns the work that our coaches do with our national players but also teaching a coaching philosophy that we teach and create an alignment with the private sector in this country. The coach today still needs a coaching philosophy and still needs an operating system and a belief system that guides them every day because they’re faced with a lot of decisions as a coach and if you don’t have a strong belief system that’s based on character development, that’s based on practices of right and wrong and an athlete-centred approach you can be going in different directions before you know it.

What are some of the challenges faced by those inducted to your program?

PL: Most people begin coaching by coaching the way they were coached, from their experiences. We have the discussion and get individuals to reflect on their beliefs – why do you believe this as a coach and what are the influences on that? If you were coached by somebody fantastic, if as a professional athlete you had great coaching experiences, that’s fantastic for you, but what if you had a coach who is less than perfect and you adopt those same coaching practices? It goes back to being reflective and asking why do you coach the way you coach, what is your beliefs system, and then aligning around the technical, tactical, ideas of right and wrong, and ideas of professionals and what that means, what are the non-negotiables in your environment with athletes, with teams, with staff. That’s the foundation of a good coach.

To what extent are you managing these coaches’ expectations?

PL: There are some coaches who would like to be in the box and on TV. But some of the best developmental coaches have an unbelievably robust business and for them to be able to work with a young player, for us to be able to create a relationship with them, to develop trust, when they offer a player to us, we recognise the work that they are doing and we keep them involved in the process. I think that’s getting much better and I’m not seeing coaches saying, ‘I’m coaching because I want to be in the box’. It goes back to the philosophy: why are you doing this? Is it to help kids have a better life and to develop skill to their potential as an athlete or are you doing it because you want to win and be recognised? I don’t think we run into that very often.

What are the Character Traits of a Tennis Champion?

Did Stress Management Play a Part in Sloane Stephens’ US Open Success?

How the USTA, Team Sky and Cirque du Soleil Are Making the Most of their Recovery Protocols

Can you describe your coach development workshops?

PL: The USTA and our teaching organisations around the country offer educational opportunities for coaches who have no coaching experience, who are volunteering and helping out with a youth program. We do targeted workshops along the pathway and might have, for example, a camp for players born in 2006 – 12-year-olds – and at that camp a parent is invited and their personal coach is invited. We bring their ecosystem here: the player, the parent and the coach. For some of them it will be the first time they’re at our training centre, it’ll be their first national camp, and we provide opportunities to interact with the coaches around educational programming for them and we offer educational opportunities and relationship building with the parents while they are here. The kid will be playing and learning on-court and off-court; and that’s in psychological, strength & conditioning, technical and tactical. Recently, we had 20 pro coaches here from around the country for six days, which is more of an immersive, educational experience where it’s curriculum-driven or experiences on-court and off-court, lectures, accountability for a passing grade in the course. And then, for our national coaches, and we have 15 on the men’s and 15 on the women’s side, that’s about personal development and really specific development to meet their needs both professionally and personally and to support them in their work with the players that they’re working with; it can be very broad and it can be very specific.

The player is at the centre of the progress.

PL: We’re identifying the players for the pathway and, at a younger age, creating relationships with those coaches and their players and it’s certainly a bigger number at a younger age and as they progress there’s a narrowing, but if you establish educational modelling and you establish the teaching and coaching philosophy, you establish relationships with the players and the parents, that creates a synergy for when they’re 16, 17 or 18. There’s more relationships and we’re better off.

How do you work to identify aspiring coaches?

PL: We’re being methodical inasmuch as we can control it and done a lot of research on mentorship. We’ve engaged some really good researchers who have done some profound work in the idea of mentee and mentor-type relationships. We’ve established a coaching mentorship programme and we’re in our second year of a formalised programme where we’re actually evaluating it. The other thing we’ve established is a coaching fellowship programme. Every summer we bring in six recent university graduates who want to make a career in high performance coaching and we provide them with a 12-week experience on our team. We’re trying to be methodical about building and identifying a base, certainly on the side of having women in coaching.

What will be the biggest coach development opportunity in the next few years?

PL: The idea of mentorship and creating opportunities and individualised educating for a coach depending on where they are in their career. There’s still a role for certification and developing competencies at a base level but, after that’s finished, to be able to identify people that want to live a lifestyle of elite sport and high performance and create opportunities for young people to learn from people who are accomplished and successful and want to be teachers. That for me is the next step.

What will a tennis coach look like in 10 years’ time?

PL: I hope in the United States it’s a more diverse group of individuals coming from different backgrounds; more women in the sport; technologically savvy, unbelievable communication skills, but still have a really strong belief system that sets the tone and can guide a young athlete and a family through a tough process. Tennis is one-to-one and the athlete is out there by themselves; there’s pain and suffering – it’s a tough sport. A coach needs to be able to have the soft skills to communicate and inspire but there still needs to be an understanding of how you put the hard work down, the yards and the meters to go where you want to go.

Further reading:

What are the Character Traits of a Tennis Champion?

Did Stress Management Play a Part in Sloane Stephens’ US Open Success?

How the USTA, Team Sky and Cirque du Soleil Are Making the Most of their Recovery Protocols

Paul Lubbers of the USTA explains that as athlete development grows in sophistication so must coach education and development pathways.

[22
["post-1161","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-coaching-development-performance

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
