It behoves sports organisations to be more systematic in developing and supporting its coaching workforce. With this in mind, for this particular virtual roundtable we want to explore the future of coaching, what will it look like in 5 years\u2019 time and what can we also practitioners do to influence the evolution of these coaches.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The group discussed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The impact of empathy on the future of coaching.<\/li>\n<li>Profiling tools for coaches.<\/li>\n<li>Objective measurements of coaching performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recommended Reading: Leaders Performance Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/david-epstein-atlanta\/\">David Epstein: Why Roger Federer and Steve Nash Made it to the Top<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/coaching-and-development\/what-does-the-future-hold-for-coach-development\/\">What Does the Future Hold for Coach Development?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/arizona-diamondbacks-meditation-and-mindfulness\/\">How the Arizona Diamondbacks Are Introducing Meditation and Mindfulness for Players and Staff Alike<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Future Thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How will the future student consume education?<\/li>\n<li>Do we need to think about creating experiences more than knowledge? In the first instance it\u2019s important to get that knowledge base, but to them focus more on experiential learning can have greater impact by placing people in different scenarios.<\/li>\n<li>We know character is one of the essential ingredients but what does it actually mean? Define what this means in your sport \/ context and create a bespoke approach to collecting information on it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Coaching &amp; developing empathy in future coaches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We are noticing a trend that successful modern-day coaches have more empathy with the players \u2013 there is more focus on developing an empathic relationship with them rather than coaching for themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Is empathy a natural trait that one has or is it something you can develop?<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to make the coaches more aware of the impact of empathy as it isn\u2019t often natural for everyone. Once that you have that level of awareness, you can then look at how to create better connection.<\/li>\n<li>We need to continue to allow and create opportunities for our coaches to step outside of their own domain and have reflection time.<\/li>\n<li>We have to have a recalibration of the notion of being entirely results-driven. We need to better link elements such as player and staff wellbeing to the sporting outcomes, rather than just winning or losing.<\/li>\n<li>The modern athlete wants and need more than just an identity of winning we are happy, and if we lose, we\u2019re unhappy. There needs to be a bigger focus on the wider perspective.<\/li>\n<li>Modern day coaches certainly need to adapt the skillset to be able to better understand the athlete and compliment that with building an effective environment around them.<\/li>\n<li>Profiling tools are often looked upon negatively, but the question is \u2018do we know everyone we work with?\u2019 If we better inform ourselves on this, we can then be more efficient on what the environment around them looks like.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important athletes have a dual identity.<\/li>\n<li>Do the athletes need to know as much as it is perceived around the technical, tactical expertise or instead do they need to have the confidence and belief around who they are instead of necessarily what they know?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The future learner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical literacy has changed. Coaches need to be more physically literate with under 15s than they were before because they are no longer getting this in schools or at home.<\/li>\n<li>There is a wider concern around those with higher levels of emotional intelligence and empathy choosing other professions over coaching as it is an easier route in.<\/li>\n<li>In tennis, the currency of the sports scientist has become more important than the person who has been the practitioner of their craft for years \u2013 they have more weight as an expert.<\/li>\n<li>How does the \u2018play\u2019 concept look in 10 years\u2019 time in relation to the effects of urbanisation? What does both technology and society look like in the future?<\/li>\n<li>Exploring the spectrum of students which will require a more complexed skillset in the future.<\/li>\n<li>How will a future student consume education? Face-to-face vs. online.<\/li>\n<li>There has been a fundamental shift in the way we are delivery education not just in sport, but in certain domains the skillsets for teachers, coaches etc hasn\u2019t shifted.<\/li>\n<li>We often think about the future learner from an athlete perspective, but it\u2019s also important to consider the future coaching learner as well.<\/li>\n<li>We need to start thinking about coach development in a different way and actually implementing a strategy around this rather than thinking about what happens next year. Very few courses or curriculum are agile enough to support this, so we need to bring that agility into our thinking.<\/li>\n<li>Do we need to think about creating experiences more than knowledge? In the initial instance it\u2019s important to get that knowledge base, but to them focus more on experiential learning can have greater impact by placing people in different scenarios.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Profiling tools.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cricket Australia built their own profiling tool for coaches called the EPQ (Elite Performance Qualities). This was bespoke to the organisation to help evaluate but also to develop the character of the coaches.<\/li>\n<li>The EPQ included: 1. Team Oriented 2. Professionalism &amp; Discipline 3. Resilience 4. Ruthless\/Combative 5. Adaptable<\/li>\n<li>We know character is one of the essential ingredients but what does it actually mean? Define what this means in your sport \/ context and create a bespoke approach to collecting information on it.<\/li>\n<li>What does a coach need to offer in a club environment? Once you have defined this, you can look to influence this psychologically, behavioural, emotional, social, physical perspective.
