How do we get it effectively and how can we measure it?

Can engagement with the community outside of the high performance environment of your organisation enhance performance?

What new coach development tools we are currently using or wanting to use to support our programmes?

Recommended Reading: Leaders Performance Institute

How Tennis Canada is Coaching its Coaches

Why Coaching Qualifications Are Not Always Enough in Sport

How Pilots Receive Feedback in the US Air Force

Future Thinking

How can we better measure feedback and experiences of our coaches?

What will the future student / athlete look like? How can we then redesign and support the development of coaches to be reading for this?

Look for real-world scenarios to enhance your creativity. If we have a challenge, where else in the world can we go to learn something about that deficiency?

Key Thinking Points

Different ways we can feed back to coaches in ways that might impact their behaviour.

How do we get feedback? It can be very difficult to measure the progress of a coach or the impact of any development work on them. It is a challenge but also an opportunity in measuring a coach’s development through feedback.

How have people worked around player feedback in relation to the work of the coaches?

At Stuttgart they implemented a concept called ‘Feedback Friday’ – it was set up to empower the players to share amongst themselves and with other coaches, their feedback on training etc. It was designed to give staff access.

Often on the first occasion the players are reluctant as it isn’t something they have been used to, however we found that it became organic in relation to two-way feedback the more we did it and it didn’t necessarily need to happen within ‘Feedback Friday’.

It’s important to make this holistic in the formatting as well. It’s a good opportunity to include the coach, the player, and other members of the performance team – there was a positive impact on the culture do the openness this created amongst everyone.

At the Gold Coast twice a month, on the exit from a meeting the guys were asked to pick up a couple of sticky notes to write down two things they picked up throughout the meeting – it encouraged immediacy of feedback.

Throughout individual review meetings, the Gold Coast also switched this up by encouraging the players to come to the coaches and review their own performance. Include simple questions: one thing you did well in the last game, one thing you want to do better and ‘coach, how can you help me?’

Human Synergistics Leadership Impact Tool – this is a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 16 individual pieces of feedback that come from peers. This is a great way of opening up good conversations.

Asking the players to feedback on ‘what’s the message they took away from the meeting etc.’ is simple but effective feedback.

To then make this relevant to the development of the coaches, using this data capture to identify any potential trends etc. is useful in feeding back into the development programme – again it’s a great way of generating good conversations within the group.

Where feedback can fall down is when it is done too early between player and coach – if there is someone on the staff they can be that conduit.

With coaches less in tune to feedback it’s about exposure to change their behaviours. Positioning coaches who are open to feedback and to have those conversations in the same space can start to influence this.

Highlight and use the individuals as role models who are open to feedback and are acting on it. Storytelling in this regard can have a powerful impact on the other coaches.

In the modern coaching landscape, in some sports there does seem to be a reluctance / lack of clarity of using athlete personal reflection and rather an emphasis on the data collated from coding during the sessions. Reflection lends itself to better understanding the learning styles and characters of your athletes and an improved methodology that is going to be more impactful – this is also the same for the coaches.

Mentors throughout the coaching pathway are a simple but effective intervention.

If you had a player who was resistant to feedback, to new ideas, and improvement would we want them to be a part of our culture? You could argue this should be a similar conversation around coaches.

Coaches on the whole are analytical, but they don’t do enough evaluating of themselves. It’s about raising awareness to having to spend time thinking about yourself – it can only be a positive when influencing your players in the long-term.

Feedback should be seen as skill – there is a huge learning element in how to receive and give feedback.

2. Initiatives coaches have led that have resulted in players being deeply engaged as great community citizens, with a corresponding lift in performance.

The notion of engagement and having an identity beyond just their specific role within the club, outside of their environment is an interesting advancement – can we draw connection between this and performance enhancement?

This feeds into some of the key insights from Serial Winning Coaches research and the concept of ‘Driven Benevolence’.

Anecdotally, we would say that this impacts on characteristics such a humility etc. but it is difficult to draw these together to prove it impacts performance – future opportunity?

We can correlate this to an influence on behaviour but not necessarily improved performance.

It’s important to generate that deep connection as a team that is crucial part of your cultural makeup. Perhaps trying to quantify whether performance can be impacted by engagement outside of our own environments is the wrong way of looking at it.

As coaches and leaders in this space, we need to provide and find opportunities for both players and other staff to engage in these types of interventions. We have to model this and create awareness.

A piece of research highlighted that players believe that those high performance coaches and leaders that don’t embrace the community element as part of being a high performer is what can impact overall athlete wellbeing – there needs to be variety in the performance environment.

Even though it’s difficult to quantify this, it’s still incredibly important to keep within our programmes whether there is evidence or not. We should always keep sight of developing the human as well as the coach.

3. What’s on our minds? Coach development best practices.

Mentor Training Programme – an intervention to engage the more experienced coaches on the pathway who perhaps don’t have anywhere to go. The aim is to bring new life into these more experienced coaches and educate them to become mentors. It is a way of recycling their experiences with ‘younger bucks’ joining the ranks.

Using cross-sport experiences with other coaches, especially Head Coaches who don’t have any other peers internationally. Where can they go to share lessons and challenges?

Korn Ferry’s Emotional & Social Competency Inventory – this is an emotional intelligence evaluation tool. A great way of getting coaches to self-assess their own EI.

Look for real-world scenarios to enhance your creativity.
