Taken collectively it is possibly the last area where teams and athletes can find those significant performance gains. Creating this holistic approach is challenging, especially with the potential of departments working within siloes. How can we do it even better both in the present and further down the pathway?<\/li>\n<li>Preventing siloes and expert bias from occurring.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018No gurus \u2013 they do not exist in today\u2019s world\u2019. Understand the difference between intelligence and knowledge \u2013 the problem must be put into context. Don\u2019t try to be an expert in everything, but be conversive in those areas so nothing is lost in translation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Challenge 1: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Creating a holistic and interdisciplinary approach within the high performance unit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Challenge in sports such as baseball is the geographical landscape of major and minor league teams \u2013 can be difficult to get everyone on the same page.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to change paradigms in elite sport is also challenging due to the intense schedules \u2013 how can you take advantage of a window in the season to impact the high performance model?<\/li>\n<li>Constant challenge, especially in North American sport, in athletes bringing in some of their own people into the mix. There\u2019s a hesitancy to share information.<\/li>\n<li>Creating openness across departments as well as creating that with your athletes is crucial in nurturing an interdisciplinary approach.<\/li>\n<li>Make the information available to all the athletes \u2013 let them know it is available without forcing them.<\/li>\n<li>Younger athletes are more comfortable with the data and the technology. They are more open to adapting their game, so they are happy to ask for this information.<\/li>\n<li>Are your coaches conversive enough to have the necessary communication with the player surrounding this information?<\/li>\n<li>Coaching the coaches in this aspect is very important, maybe even more important than educating the players.<\/li>\n<li>Talent recruitment is something important to consider when striving to implement this approach.<\/li>\n<li>How can we rethink this process to prevent expert bias and the development of siloes? It\u2019s important to keep the culture egoless in this respect.<\/li>\n<li>When recruiting, look at those practitioners from diverse backgrounds and intertwine them with the ones with a more traditional background.<\/li>\n<li>In those sports with intense travel and performance staff operating in different demographics, creating and designing a bespoke performance management system has been a successful way of creating a common language.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a common language is one of the core aspects of having efficient interdisciplinary teams.<\/li>\n<li>A simple is to have those within your team who have operated within other sports \/ fields of excellence to share their previous approach to interdisciplinary teams. Seek inspiration and experiences from your teams.<\/li>\n<li>In numerous sports, interdisciplinary working has been a challenge as the coach has always been \u2018king\u2019 and the inclusion of more specialists etc. can be seen as a way of challenging how the coach thinks.<\/li>\n<li>Educating the coaches in interdisciplinary working further down the pathway is becoming increasingly common; it is important to encourage an interdisciplinary approach.<\/li>\n<li>Identify those talent coaches within your organisations, expose them to other disciplines and educate them on the overarching theme of interdisciplinary working.<\/li>\n<li>Create situations and environments where different disciplines have to work with each other \u2013 you have the ability to nurture and impact those relationships as a leader.<\/li>\n<li>This process is a simple but effective way of normalising these conversations and collaborations.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of organisations cooperate at a good level, but do they truly collaborate?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a set of principles that all of your high performance staff abide by? A simple but effective way in driving that common language.<\/li>\n<li>Physical time and space is important to consider. Give people enough time to spend time with other practitioners other than themselves. \u2018Buddy them up in the trenches\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about projects, consider how you can collaborate to achieve together rather than setting people off on individual missions.<\/li>\n<li>Being comfortable in one\u2019s own expertise is a given, but it\u2019s also important that they feel comfortable in and around other people\u2019s disciplines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Considerations of expert bias and impact on disciplinary working.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expert bias is a challenge in modern day high performance. Practitioners can believe that their field is the most important and there\u2019s a sense of protection against their work from being devalued.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s about being able to take the opinions from the other people and really fostering collaboration. It should be a collective approach.<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging teams to come together to solve a common goal is a simple tool to nurture this approach. This encourages those in the group to see the expertise a certain discipline can bring to the process.<\/li>\n<li>One of the biggest barriers to disciplinary working is how we are trained in our disciplines. You are trained to think that your discipline is the most important \u2013 \u2018a reductionist approach\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>When collaborating, consider and do not lose the human component in that process.<\/li>\n<li>Stress these three things: 1. \u2018no gurus \u2013 they do not exist in today\u2019s world\u2019. 2.
