As the team prepares for a new era next month as Team Ineos, following Sky’s sale of the team, it is looking into the matter of advanced recovery modalities but must, in the meantime, maximise the time its riders spend on the team bus.

“At present, the riders finish the race, they have their recovery gowns and then they’re straight on the bus for a shower, then it can take 20 minutes or it can take as much as three hours to reach the hotel. What we do is try to maximise that time they’re on the bus.

“We have recovery/compression boots for each rider and each seat has a plug socket for those; we use Recovery Pump and all riders will do at least one cycle of that before we go to the hotel; we also use game-ready units and ice compression systems, which are ultimately used in cases of crashes or trauma for the reduction of swelling in an acute injury.”

Time must also be used wisely back at the hotel. Thomas and his colleagues have adopted a streamlined, personalised approach that involves athlete education and knowing the needs of the riders long before the race gets underway.

Nathan, what is the next step once riders reach your hotel?

NT: Each rider receives a specific massage from our massage therapist and, if they have an injury or a problem that they felt that day, they’ll communicate that to me and we may provide something even more specific such as acupuncture, dry needling, high velocity thrust manipulation or heated radiotherapy. I tend to oversee all of that during a race day.

How does this approach differ from other sports?

NT: We have a small amount of time. In rugby or netball their next competitive match might be in five days’ time so they probably have a more dialled-in recovery week in terms of gradual regression of the body and within 24 to 48 hours they’re building it back up again for the next competition. With us, when they finish on the bike at 5 or 6 o’clock they’re back on the bike again at 9 or 10 o’clock the next morning. We have a very short window for recovery and it’s effectively extreme endurance each day.

Part One: Join Team Sky as we Take a Glimpse into the Future of Sport

Part Two: The Future of Sport and Learning from the Moments that Matter

Beyond those modalities, what aspects of recovery can you prioritise?

NT: We put a big emphasis on nutrition. They’ll have structured meals for muscle repair, so replenishing their carbohydrate sources and replenishing the proteins for muscle repair. We also put an emphasis on sleep because when you think of the small windows that we have for recovery this is one of the variables we can control; so we put a big emphasis on sleep health and sleep effectiveness. Each rider will have specific Technogel mattresses, duvets and pillows that we take from hotel to hotel and each room is set up by our team who do all the hotel logistics. We also have a sleep protocol for riders to follow, so no blue light or flashing on the phone after 8 or 9 o’clock at night. Trunk mobility is also important because if their functionality is better then there is transfer on the bike the following day. The more mobile they become the more robust they become and the less chance they have of picking up an injury.

The makeup of the team is cosmopolitan – does this have an impact on your approach?

NT: Yes, our manual therapy tool box needs to be quite broad in terms of what we offer because we’re dealing with different cultures – German, Colombian and British riders, for example, who have different ideas. If you ask a Latin rider what recovery is and they’ll say ‘siesta, I want to lie on my bed and not move’; it works for them and their bodies and there is no better recovery than sleep ultimately. You have to be very selective and individualised in your treatments for riders and that comes with time, working with them, getting to know what things work and what things don’t work.

What sort of physical condition is ideal or realistic during a Grand Tour?

NT: It’s subjective in terms of how they are feeling. We have 30 riders and I know what optimal movement looks like for each of them. I see them throughout a race, throughout a season, I’m seeing them every day and we have movement screens and protocols. Sometimes they may not have pain but they may not be moving as they normally would. I’ll ask them to try something different and re-test. Working in endurance, injury is usually accumulative, an accumulation of workload. So it’s about constantly monitoring movement and muscle flexibility.

What outcomes are you looking for?

NT: For our guys it’s very specific. In a Grand Tour there could be three or four consecutive mountain stages and we’ll ask what are the primary muscles you need to be a top level climber in cycling. You’re going to need to engage your hamstrings a lot more than you would on a flat road, so I’ll always look at hamstring flexibility, spinal flexibility. Cycling is a very symmetrical sport, it’s linear and you’re moving in one plane of movement so if something becomes unbalanced it can create problems. What I’m trying to achieve with these guys is symmetry.

Part Three: The Future of Sport and the Stories that People Tell

Part Four: Shaping the Future of Sport

How important is rider education in recovery?

NT: You’d hope you’d already built that relationship prior to the race so that come race time everyone is dialled-in, they know what you’re doing, they know why you’re doing it and then it becomes automatic on the day. A race should be as stress-free and time efficient as possible. You’ve got a short window of opportunity to see them and we’ll use screening tools to monitor certain things we know they’re susceptible to; if we think they might break down then we know the ways in which that might happen. If I run a drop-in clinic I have to be structured because I may get 20-30 minutes with each rider and we have to be really on it in terms of communication because the last thing you want is a rider being treated at midnight.

Do you share data with your riders?

NT: Over the course of a season we’ll collect data around functional movement, from spinal movement to hamstring flexibility, and you’re constantly showing the athlete what you’re doing. They like to have that control and now what’s going on; there’s a constant dialogue with cyclists. It keeps them happy and they feel they’ve done something productive.

Does that mean that riders will often come to you?

NT: Yes and they are very in-tune with their bodies in terms of their posture, bike position; they’re also in-tune with their teammates’ back positions. Some of the riders might even say ‘why don’t you check so and so? He didn’t look right today on the bike’. That can come from a rider or it can come from someone in the following car; it could also come from one of our coaches or one of the doctors.

Are there particular successes you can point to in terms of recovery?

NT: We’ve finished Grands Tours with a full roster of riders and from a health and wellbeing perspective that is a big thing – to get them through 21 stages with few injuries when you’re seeing other teams reduced to five or six riders in some cases. How we ride as a team is massive because our riders probably have a higher workload than others because their style is to take the race on and control it. From a recovery point of view, from a muscular-skeletal point of view, a health and wellbeing point of view, we try to support them getting through that while still performing.

And the lessons learnt along the way?

NT: The off-race period is a challenge for us, as we’re quite dialled-in but away from races we could do an even better job of managing and monitoring our riders. I can see this area developing in the course of the next 18 months. It’s very difficult to do in practice but we have strong networks of people across the globe and that can help us.

Do you see that as the future?

NT: Going back to what I mentioned at the top, we’re also looking at the possibility of a specific tailored recovery vehicle that travels with us during races. That will be a real game-changer if we have shockwave machines, cryotherapy machines, ice baths on the road.

And it must also boil down to making better use of what you’ve got.

NT: Yes. For instance, in terms of data, how can we manipulate that to make things better for us? It might be screening tools, from my point of view. And around recovery, how can we tighten up our protocols to make sure everything can do everything they are tasked with doing in an efficient manner? With recovery protocols you have to have the buy-in of the athlete but it’s also about prompting them at times. That’s the nature of the job.

Want more from Team Sky?

Establishing the Winning Behaviours that Sustain Performance

Sir Dave Brailsford on Creating a Winning Environment at Team Sky

Team Sky Physio Nathan Thomas explains that efficient use of time is as essential as athlete buy-in.

[21
["post-1234","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-human-performance

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
