The creation of this environment is a challenge for any leader, and generally requires considerable amounts of observation, perseverance and most importantly, organisational buy-in. The world\u2019s most successful organisations have all found a formula that works for them. An element of patience is needed to have an organic feel to it. If it\u2019s forced, it becomes too manufactured.<\/li>\n<li>How do the athletes perceive the culture? An example could be to have them send in x3 words that best describe the culture and environment that we are in if you were speaking to someone outside of the organisation. Collate these and highlight to give a visual cue.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Challenge 1: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>How do you build a culture in a new organisation \/ environment vs. bringing others into an existing one?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The creation and consistency around your core values and mission statement is simple in this process, but crucial at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>This is a simple way of connecting new people coming in, but also having a purpose for those already existing within that culture \u2013 do you speak about those values regularly?<\/li>\n<li>Do your have an introduction process player to player, whereby the current players are owning that on-boarding of new recruits? The players take new recruits around the facility to meet key staff etc. Often staff will do this, but is it more powerful than having current players do this?<\/li>\n<li>There is a trend emerging between existing culture and recruitment of talent \u2013 with a strong or already existing culture, there is becoming even more emphasis on the values of the player and alignment with those already in place.<\/li>\n<li>How can you create a better connect with new people coming \u2013 whether this is through slightly more creative ways such as using loyal or long-standing supporters etc.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a higher purpose is incredibly powerful in sustaining a high performance culture. If you are performing for something bigger and shaping society as a whole instead of just winning, it has the potential to take your culture to another level.<\/li>\n<li>Working on values can be a challenging in sports or institutions with high turnover. You are almost creating a new culture for each group based on their characteristics and playing philosophy. What can be done to keep an element of consistency despite constant change?<\/li>\n<li>In the case of Loughborough, new students come in and out, but it\u2019s the DNA and history of success within Loughborough that is the higher purpose.<\/li>\n<li>Often negative results \/ experiences of defeat are an opportunity to drive home what goes on off the field to garner a sense of togetherness and buy-in to core values.<\/li>\n<li>Having a higher purpose is a great aspect to have within your culture, but are your athletes \/ staff impacting it?<\/li>\n<li>Words and phrases on the wall are great for reference, but how are you bringing them to life?<\/li>\n<li>A lot of leaders try to create the culture too quickly, an element of patience is needed to have an organic element. Remove themselves from the environment you are in and come back when you are ready.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Is 10 years of heading a successful environment too long and leading to blindness to the energy of creativity when faced with a new blank canvas?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you considered bringing in someone with a fresh lens to provide a different perspective? Often we can become wedded to that culture that we almost become blind.<\/li>\n<li>There is always an opportunity with new recruits to make an element of their mandate to audit what is currently in place. An outsider\u2019s perspective is always good to tap into.<\/li>\n<li>Work with your athletes to co-create the culture. More evident in the millennial generation where there is more of an inclusive approach required.<\/li>\n<li>How do the athletes perceive the culture?
