Following this, <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/leaders-events\/the-sport-performance-summit\/\">the Leaders Sport Performance Summit<\/a> on the 15-16 November at Twickenham Stadium. We hope to see you there, as we strive to provide an environment for you to connect and meet fellow members that you have engaged with during the course of the year so far.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout August, we\u2019ve once again had a series of thought-provoking roundtable discussions and enjoyed joining the dots for you in connecting you with great people in the network. Connecting and extending conversations will always be one of the most effective powerful ways of driving your learning.<\/p>\n<p>We hope our key takeaways from across the Leaders Performance Institute from the month of August keeps you on the pulse with contemporary thinking across the high performance space and provides you with some inspiration to engage with the variety of opportunities on offer through your membership.<\/p>\n<p>So what really stood out to us in August? Here, we outline some choice cuts from across a number of the sessions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual Roundtables<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As usual, three virtual roundtables took place in the month of July \u2013 one topic-led conversation focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/how-effectively-are-you-coaching-your-coaches\/\">coach development<\/a>. We also engaged in the first session of our third and final Performance Support Series of the year \u2013 Leaders Performance Institute Performance Advisor Dr. David Fletcher kicked off session one with some initial thinking around <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/what-role-must-the-leader-play-in-the-evolution-of-a-team-culture\/\">evolving team culture<\/a> \u2013 session two follows on 15 September. Finally, we had our fourth Leadership Skills session on <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/how-does-your-team-balance-adding-value-today-versus-tomorrow\/\">strategic leadership<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategic leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the key challenges we all face as leaders is working out how to get the balance right between \u2018adding value for today\u2019 and \u2018adding value for tomorrow\u2019. This session explored concepts such as taking a longer time horizon, making choices (\u2018the hedgehog concept\u2019), scenario planning, and focusing on your key enablers. Below are some discussion points that stood out to us and we hope will support you too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The six dimensions of strategic leadership:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Add value for tomorrow:<\/strong> you have to add the value today to earn the right to compete for tomorrow. Leaders and organisations that are good in this space figure out how to carve out time to spend more time adding value for tomorrow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Figure out \u2018what it takes to win\u2019 (WITTW):<\/strong> what are we going to pay attention to? At its heart, strategy is about making choices \u2013 this is something we struggle with. We can\u2019t do everything. You have to make choices on where you are going to focus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovate:<\/strong> INSEAD research shows that if you look at organisations that have come into a market from the outside who have ended up dominating that market in under five years, over 80% had done it by playing by different rules. The vast majority don\u2019t do it by playing by the same rules \u2013 they change the game and disrupt. Challenge convention and test and learn.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get the right people on the bus:<\/strong> this is possibly something people don\u2019t pay enough attention to. If you are struggling to get stuff done, look at the people you have around you. Once you have the right people around you, things begin to happen more easily. One of the most important strategic decisions we make is about who we allow on the bus, who do we make some tough decisions on to take off the bus? Also, who is surrounding the bus? Who is well placed to challenge you, give feedback and who are you tapping into to get external insight from?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Observe &amp; adapt:<\/strong> constantly scanning the external environment to update our mental maps and assumptions around how the world around us is changing. It\u2019s about taking time out to think about what is different and what has changed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scenario planning:<\/strong> prepare for the unexpected. The key insight here is that by considering a scenario and considering what the plan would be if it were to happen, we are in a much better position to succeed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Performance Support Series with David Fletcher: Evolving Team Culture &#8211; Session one<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was the first session of a three-part series with one of our Performance Advisors, and Director of Performance Psychology at Loughborough University, Dr David Fletcher. In session one we explored that people are at the heart of culture, and as people are complex and hard to predict it means that cultures mirror this challenge.<\/p>\n<p>We have highlighted a model below that Dave shared with us that encapsulates <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/what-role-must-the-leader-play-in-the-evolution-of-a-team-culture\/\">the relationship between leadership and evolving team culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The vision-challenge-support leadership model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This model originated in student development and was proposed for teaching and mentoring. The theory is about how to develop people. Within this process, there are three core components to bringing it to life:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A need to establish a vision and reminding your followers of that vision.<\/li>\n<li>Having the ability to challenge your followers to deliver their contribution, is key in achieving the vision.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting your followers in delivering their contribution.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What underpins vision, challenge and support?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vision:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An inspirational image of the future.<\/li>\n<li>Providing meaning and direction for the followers\u2019 effort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Challenge:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High expectations of performance.<\/li>\n<li>Goals that stretch individuals out of their comfort zone.<\/li>\n<li>Constructive goals that challenge them in new ways.<\/li>\n<li>How do coaches provide developmental feedback and with what language?<\/li>\n<li>Provide advice on how to progress forwards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Support:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide individuals with assistance. This can be different types of assistance based on the individuals needs at any particular time.<\/li>\n<li>Enables them to operate effectively.<\/li>\n<li>It is crucial that athletes have an entourage of people to get the different types of support at different times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Coaching the coaches: areas of focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was a fascinating conversation around <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/here-are-some-steps-teams-are-taking-to-help-their-coaches-to-develop\/\">developing coaches<\/a>. The field of coach development continues to move at a fast pace. We are in a space where the value of coach support is becoming more apparent and important across high performance environments. In this roundtable, we looked to explore and hear about the focuses of others around how they are focusing on developing their coaches.<\/p>\n<p>There were three key areas that were shared within the group which we thought provided some nice best practice ideas for you, our Performance Institute members.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Learning networks:<\/strong> to provide coaches with more support, organisations are beginning to ask coaches, as part of their development journeys, to review and design specific learning networks. This creates an awareness of who they speak to the most and who and where do they go to for new knowledge around a particular section of performance. Where are the gaps in our knowledge and how do we plug them?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency:<\/strong> we often talk about the importance of multidisciplinary teams having clarity and understanding of the individual development plans of athletes \u2013 what about extending this further to creating transparency around the development plans or coaches and other high performance staff? A couple of examples were shared on the call where coaches have put their individual development plans up on the wall next to the athletes\u2019, allowing for the athletes to also input on what the focuses of the coaches should be.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coaching cells:<\/strong> coaching cells are small groups of coaches who get together and take it in turns within the group to present either a coaching challenge, a topic of interest or opportunity they see. The purpose of the cell is to create a cross-pollination of ideas and space to share ideas and solutions. Aside from the opportunity to have impactful and important discussions around coaching practice, coaching cells are a powerful intervention in developing relationships between coaches.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Community Group Calls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This month across our Community Group conversations, which bring together Leaders Performance Institute Members with similar job functions and challenges, we\u2019ve focused on one theme in particular: <strong>mental health for staff and coaches<\/strong>. This was discussed across our Southern Hemisphere Community Group. This is such an important topic of conversation, so below are some ideas and thoughts shared by the group:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thriving vs surviving:<\/strong> sessions being coordinated to help educate staff and coaches around the important distinguishment of thriving as opposed to surviving. How are we getting coaches into a thriving mindset?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mental health first aid courses:<\/strong> have you consider putting staff through a mental health first aid course? This has proven to be a real positive in providing perspectives on the warning signs for individuals, which has been useful for the wider team perspective as well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coach periodisation:<\/strong> we spend a lot of time planning and evaluating athletes\u2019 schedules using periodised models and considering their high stress times in their calendar \u2013 this has been extended to identifying when the times are for peak high stress coaching situations. How are we putting support around key people within this? Should we be having breaks before the pinnacle games or competitions start?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coach wellbeing:<\/strong> what do your coaches need from a mental wellbeing perspective? Often we can assume, but being as informed as possible can be more impactful. We should be looking to match this with the athletes as a minimum standard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reframing the narrative for coaches:<\/strong> coaches are typically very selfless and so is the profession. A reframing narrative that has been used is the notion of being selfish if you are not showing up as the best version of yourself when the athletes really need you (\u2018pointy end\u2019 of the season etc). When we win, everyone has got a role to play in that, not just the athletes \u2013 consider shifting the perception of pressure and consider language that resonates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Storytelling:<\/strong> we often forget how powerful this can be. It enables us to tell the story behind the person \u2013 what does their day look like? What about their life outside of work and what could that mean to others in the building?
