We realise that the hustle and bustle of high performance sport throws you straight back into the deep end, so this virtual roundtable will allow us to focus on some further thoughts and follow up questions from content and conversations picked up across the summit.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The group discussed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breaking down siloes and looking to create a better integrated performance approach.<\/li>\n<li>Building a healthier wellbeing environment for athletes and staff.<\/li>\n<li>Reflection, evaluation and debriefing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recommended Reading &amp; Listening: Leaders Performance Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/key-takeaways-lsps-las-vegas-2019\/\">Lessons from Leaders: Leaders Sport Performance Summit Las Vegas 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/leaders-performance-podcast-2019-lsps-las-vegas\/\">Leaders Performance Podcast: An Encore from the 2019 Leaders Sport Performance Summit in Las Vegas<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Learnings <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Takeaway 1: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Given the highly unlikely but incredibly intriguing opportunity to step into a &#8220;build it from the ground up&#8221; situation like <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/summit-session-creating-driving-inter-disciplinary-teams\/\">Duncan French or Jay Mellette<\/a>, what would I actually do? How would I go about this? How and why would my approach be different when stepping into an existing program?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How would you define the ideal culture? What would be the key constituent element of that, that is crucial to have?<\/li>\n<li>What philosophically do you really believe in and how do you intertwine that within the wider culture?<\/li>\n<li>If you were put into a place which has an existing culture, how would my ideal culture have to be compromised or how do you bring the current environment along to a more ideal environment?<\/li>\n<li>In the session with Jay and Duncan, there was a discussion around expert bias \u2013 we all want to be experts and provide impactful solutions, but this is where siloes can be formed.<\/li>\n<li>How can we take our problem-solving approach and make it more coaching based where we are building connection and building autonomy?<\/li>\n<li>It may sound simple, but is your vision clear and do you know how you will execute it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Takeaway 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>How can we, as a performance community, understand, build, and better support more healthy and holistic athlete experiences? Given the harsh realities associated with high numbers and low probabilities of kids who get through our development systems, how can we create systems that support development toward elite performance levels while balancing these with support mechanisms?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A number of organisations still aren\u2019t equipped particularly well to deal with wider wellbeing and mental health.<\/li>\n<li>There still remain challenges in supporting truly elite high performance sport \u2013 thinking about the ways in which you can create a holistic, healthy, well informed manner that can achieve elite performance whilst not destroying the athlete in the process.<\/li>\n<li>What are the conditions necessary to achieve that?<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to consider the individual players and their baggage.<\/li>\n<li>Mental health is something really practical within the performance mindset and also for the human being. Thinking about the person before the performer was a key takeaway.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of rugby clubs do a fantastic job in placing emphasis on personal development to support them for future endeavours. I think we should be doing more to include this within our environment and wider culture.<\/li>\n<li>Do enough teams have enough wellness experts? There are a lot of player support roles, but there\u2019s a gap for specific wellness individuals within our organisations.<\/li>\n<li>Around the Super Bowl, the media were fantasising over the ability of coaches to be working through until 3am in the morning and that was a perception of success. How is that good and how you can even sustain that?<\/li>\n<li>How are we uplifting ourselves and others? There\u2019s a lot of discussion around the wellness of athletes, but it\u2019s crucial to include non-playing staff in this process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Takeaway 3: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Breaking down siloes and thinking more about debriefing and evaluation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breaking down traditional siloes remains one of the biggest challenges we face.<\/li>\n<li>Time is of the essence where in most elite organisations, everyone is pushing for results-driven outcomes, but in the process are bypassing so many critical steps that end up producing the results you want.<\/li>\n<li>Reflection and debrief. In the case of the US Air Force, dedicating numerous hours to reflection and evaluation and being consistent in that approach was a key lesson.<\/li>\n<li>Do we give our staff enough time to evaluate feedback and impact change? This is one way in which siloes can occur. Provide time and clarity.<\/li>\n<li>Get staff to feedback and \u2018punch holes\u2019 in thoughts. They need to have complete clarity and understanding on the process when standing in front of the athletes \u2013 get them to own it.<\/li>\n<li>Are we doing a good enough job of ensuring that the professionals in the field are confident in everything that we are doing \u2013 this can eliminate siloes as they have to attack it together to get on the same wavelength.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate your high performance setup and look to identify the places where the communication breaks down.<\/li>\n<li>Stanley McChrystal\u2019s <em>Team of Teams <\/em>highlights that the traditional ways of doing things from a strongly hierarchical point of view was not the way to go and that he needed to adapt his model to be successful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Takeaway 4: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>How to rethink organisational effectiveness and giving the athlete\u2019s a role within this.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beyond the players, there is a whole ecosystem working around the players, so when thinking about the term of holistic high performance, it clearly resonates with wider organisational effectiveness.<\/li>\n<li>What do I think need to be implemented in the pace of high performance, and secondarily, how can we reimagine expert bias where everyone speaks about what the athlete needs? A start could be, actually asking and creating a clearer more consistent dialogue with the players.<\/li>\n<li>How can you create that organic culture? What is getting in the way? Often athletes are asked the least\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Gathering the thoughts from the athletes has the potential to have just as much impact as the feedback from staff.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s key to highlight and show that there has been change to the athlete to continue to generate that buy-in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n                                <\/div>\n                            \n                            \n                            \n                                                    <\/div>\n                                        <div class=\"col visibly-hidden col--flex-align-right\">\n                                            <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leaders Virtual Roundtables: Las Vegas Reflections.
