Even then, distractions and pressure can wreck the chances of victory \u2013 so how do you prepare for these critical moments?<\/h4>\n<p>Throughout our research in 2018, one of the key performance pointers identified for the year ahead was to unearth new ideas on how to best prepare athletes for these critical moments. Which is the best way to frame the language of creating safe spaces and a culture of openness?<\/li>\n<li>What are some of the processes being used to create transparency throughout your team or organisation? How can you capture that and tailor to how you operate with these individuals?<\/li>\n<li>Think about your evaluation process and actually capturing the thoughts of the athletes in those moments. How can you then create simulated environments to positively support this?<\/li>\n<li>Communication is a skillset. How can you develop this with younger talent, especially in the modern landscape where it isn\u2019t as crucial?<\/li>\n<li>How you looked at the mental capacity to handle pressure? The body can only tolerate so much physically, so the mental capacity has a limited ability as well.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Challenge 1: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>How to create the right environment for athletes to be able to perform at their best in pressure situations?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Within pressure environments, like the Olympic Games, there are five areas of focus: the environment, the games environment itself, what\u2019s happening within the in-tact team, the macro of the Olympic team and navigating those safe environments.<\/li>\n<li>How can you create a high functioning teams when some variables are uncontrollable and the environment has the potential to change?<\/li>\n<li>One of the things to consider is tools relating to awareness surrounding their personality styles or communication styles or even what motivates them. What is powerful is when you can look at this in the wider context of a team.<\/li>\n<li>There is also the powerful notion of having conversations that otherwise wouldn\u2019t have happened. The leader needs to understand vulnerability-based trust. Vulnerability is a very powerful theme within the context of safe spaces.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of sports are focused on the technical and tactical, that other elements such as the environment aren\u2019t prioritised as well the others. How can we elevate the awareness of the space to make it all-encompassing?<\/li>\n<li>You can fabricate an environment to allow for tough conversations. AFL Team Canada did this through their jersey presentation. Rather than coming up and shaking hands and having a photo, the team turned it into a bonding opportunity where you had to stand up in front of your 30 teammates and tell them two things: 1. Something only a handful of people knew about you and 2. What it meant to represent your country.<\/li>\n<li>As a coach and leader, it\u2019s important to showcase your own vulnerability to the group and set expectations.<\/li>\n<li>When this becomes most powerful is in those last couple of minutes of games where the \u2018X\u2019s\u2019 and \u2018O\u2019s\u2019 go out a little bit and it becomes about who is the stronger brotherhood.<\/li>\n<li>This kind of environment needs to become fabricated until it becomes a normal part of the process.<\/li>\n<li>This can be a process of progression \u2013 more intense conversations can be layered on as time goes on.<\/li>\n<li>At the end of practice, the University of Northern Colorado tennis team have something they call \u2018The Bear Chair\u2019. There is a book of 3,000 questions and a player each day gets to choose a question and ask a teammate, whilst the rest of the team are listening.<\/li>\n<li>The goal is to develop the connection and bond, so when the most pressurised moments are in front, so that there is support and that connection both on and off the field.<\/li>\n<li>This also allows for better understanding of interpersonal differences. It can be both beneficial to the leader and the team members to better understand how that person thinks, interacts and how they like to be communicated with.<\/li>\n<li>Understand that communication is a skillset.<\/li>\n<li>With up and coming generations, communication in a verbal form is not as developed as a skillset. Environments are now different whereby there isn\u2019t as much of a need to develop that skillset.<\/li>\n<li>Vulnerability can enhance both openness and animosity. Some people view vulnerability as a traumatic experience \u2013 it is important to keep this in mind to not inhibit your people.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of language now focuses more on the notion of transparency rather than vulnerability.<\/li>\n<li>With your coaching staff, it is also just as important to create an environment of transparency. There is the potential to miss out on great ideas if there is a sense of closure with them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>The pressures of performance \u2013 what are some of the interventions and processes being utilised to support pressure?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a distinction between pressure situations and pressure feelings.<\/li>\n<li>It comes down to importance. You can have consequences of an event whether it is positive or negative, so the importance of that is sky high.<\/li>\n<li>Teach athletes to minimise pressure by minimising the importance. That comes through self-talk.<\/li>\n<li>Reframing can be helpful and have people talk through how they perceive the event.<\/li>\n<li>Simple methods can include taking your athletes to the environment where they will be playing. Getting them to stand in the tunnel etc. is a simple and effective way of visualising what is coming.<\/li>\n<li>Where do your athletes want to put their focus pre-match? Ask them to be specific of where they want to put their focus \u2013 set three process or \u2018how to\u2019 goals of how they want to play or how they want to compete. These can be set with the coach and then these can be visualised to support rehearsal and readiness.<\/li>\n<li>Making the process a mainstay of the evaluation process, allows the process to come before the outcome in this point of time.<\/li>\n<li>There is the challenge in trying to normalise something that is abnormal.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to practice the language and communication cues with the athlete and the coaches.<\/li>\n<li>Have you sat down with the athlete and evaluated the performance point-by-point or minute-by-minute? It allows you to collate a number of triggers and identification of trends throughout the performance.<\/li>\n<li>In the military the selection process, they are tested in those situations before making it forward in the process.<\/li>\n<li>How you looked at the mental capacity to handle pressure?
