On the agenda was how to measure potential, long-term development plans, skill development and acquisition.<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The group discussed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Processes for measuring long-term player development.<\/li>\n<li>Creating a common language and holistic approach throughout this phase.<\/li>\n<li>How the coach education and development process feeds into the development of athletes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Recommended Reading &amp; Watching: Leaders Performance Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/talent-process-looks-like-minnesota-vikings\/\">What the Talent Process Looks Like at the Minnesota Vikings<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/gareth-southgate-chelsea-warr\/\">Nurturing Talent \u2013 Tools That Can Help Us Get Ahead<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Leaders-Meet-Talent-Pathways-Manchester-City-Write-Up.pdf\">Leaders Meet: Talent Pathways<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/the-leaders-of-lezama\/\">The Leaders of Lezama<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Future Thinking:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What are some of the keys to implementing a strong balance of subjective and objective data in relation to the development of talent?<\/li>\n<li>What are some of the interventions that can be incorporated into your programmes to encourage a more holistic approach throughout the pathway?<\/li>\n<li>How are you thinking about enhancing personal and lifestyle skills with your talent to prepare them for elite environments?<\/li>\n<li>Are you analysing and dissecting \u2018the outliers\u2019 who have reached high levels of performance when it wasn\u2019t perhaps predicted?<\/li>\n<li>Do you encourage your coaches to communicate on what constitutes a strong developmental environment?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Challenge 1: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Measurements of player development. How are other organisations are thinking about this process?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are evident challenges in our world around the measuring of player development. Do you have a formal assessment in place at your organisations?<\/li>\n<li>Focus on trying to phase from a purely subjective assessment into a mixed subjective and objective assessment of players. This focuses on trying to get the coaches to maintain the shape and control so it is valid but whereby it is in a structured process rather than loose and off the cuff.<\/li>\n<li>The keys are aligned with the marriage of the subjective and objective. Within a sport like basketball, the approach will be to look at what is used in scouting operations and factor these principles into the thinking around the academies.<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about both scouting and bringing talent into the makeup of your squad, it\u2019s important to understand the group dynamics.<\/li>\n<li>Marrying objective pieces throughout the year allows you to see evolutions over time \u2013 this can highlight how and why some players made it and why some didn\u2019t. This should also consider other factors such as psychological and character development to give a more holistic approach.<\/li>\n<li>It shouldn\u2019t be a one size fits all approach that will relate to everyone, it needs to be specific to your organisation.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to ensure the coaches feel that it is their framework when it comes to measurement of development. There needs to be a commonality of how coaches perceive things across the pathway, which can positively impact the longer term view on that development.<\/li>\n<li>Empowerment of the athlete is key in their own development, and getting them to assess and monitor that development.<\/li>\n<li>Three areas to consider for assessing development: development within that sport, educational and character.<\/li>\n<li>Are you considering character development as a competitive advantage?<\/li>\n<li>A lot of the time coaches are focusing on the time or output rather than how to achieve that time.<\/li>\n<li>In the development process it\u2019s important to consider how reliable the athlete is on the coach in competition environments \u2013 in many sports the athlete is on their own, so this needs to be factored in to development plans as well.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t underestimate the process of developing the person throughout your programmes as well as the skill specific side.<\/li>\n<li>Commonality of language is crucial in this process. We all collate tonnes of quantitative data, but it\u2019s the qualitative data that can muddy the waters \u2013 so alignment and clarity of language is key to making this process more efficient.<\/li>\n<li>Have discussions with your coaches around what constitutes a strong skill development environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Measurements of long term player development. Measuring potential in athletes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s critical to have a commonality of how you are assessing your players but it is the balance of the overarching view of how we can assess and see their development, versus an operational model which works for coaches day to day that they are going to engage with and use \u2013 if this isn\u2019t utilised there can be a lame duck in the background.<\/li>\n<li>The assessment model has to have commonality across the pathway, but with the individual variations for the coaches to become a practical tool.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s quite easy to see which players make it, but are we assessing and analysing those who didn\u2019t make it?<\/li>\n<li>How much latitude do you offer coaches to ensure they remain the central tenants of what you are looking for?<\/li>\n<li>Patience is key but as we all know that in high performance sport it is difficult to have that at the elite end.<\/li>\n<li>Where is the balance between patience and the deadline of time? As coaches and leaders we are often hindered by the amount of time available to us.<\/li>\n<li>There will be athletes who are performing better at an age you don\u2019t expect them to, thus challenging your models of measurement \u2013 consider how to evaluate their performance and cross reference with your model to see if they are outliers or windows of opportunity.<\/li>\n<li>Parental support in some sports is key in the developmental phase.<\/li>\n<li>How are we working on developing lifestyle skills and independence? Some athletes don\u2019t necessarily make it to the top because of pure performance, but due to changing environments around them.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s also important to ensure there are short-term wins along the way in the wider context of the development pathway, especially when it comes to the work of coaches.<\/li>\n<li>The education of all the stakeholders involved in the development process is one of the most crucial parts of this phase.<\/li>\n<li>The commonality of language needs to address the three key elements of: physical, technical and tactical before we start to think about other characteristics such as psychological et cetera.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 3:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>How do we develop a coaching culture that applies evidence based practice that takes a more critical view to the current perspective?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do we challenge coaches enough on their playing philosophy? Often the \u2018doings of the approach\u2019 are looked at rather than understanding how they see the game.<\/li>\n<li>If we understand what and how you see that philosophy, how do you coach that?<\/li>\n<li>Is there genuine clarity around what they are trying to produce?
