What\u2019s working? What\u2019s not? Some of the cases where it perhaps hasn\u2019t worked as well is due to this process being off the mark.<\/li>\n<li>Are you people focused first? You have to have talent, but be willing to sacrifice a bit of talent for the person and the character.<\/li>\n<li>Talent runs out at some point, so it\u2019s crucial to have that person who has the heart and soul in the long run. These are the types of people you would rather bring in than those purely because they are talented.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s crucial to have a comprehensive approach to understanding the backgrounds of your players before bringing them in.<\/li>\n<li>Psychological and behavioural tests are useful, but it\u2019s important to interpret these in your own manner and define what it means.<\/li>\n<li>Having people in your organisation who have the willingness to adapt is an important trait to have.<\/li>\n<li>When recruiting, the Maple Leafs look at these criteria: intelligence, personal accountability, grit &amp; resilience, \u2018The Toronto Factor\u2019 and being a good team mate.<\/li>\n<li>How are you thinking about creating a deeper understanding of who these people are? The scouts are really important in this process as well, especially in educating and aligning them with your criteria.<\/li>\n<li>How can you quantify or measure assessment when there is a high probability that the data within those assessments aren\u2019t completely accurate.<\/li>\n<li>There is an opportunity in the sports world in learning how people and groups work together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>How do you staff (individuals), staff teams, and overall organization communicate? What\u2019s working? What\u2019s not? What\u2019s possible?\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the Cowboys, the organisation has a leadership committee where the coach filters his ideas through the group \u2013 this group convey the messaging within.<\/li>\n<li>At the Maple Leafs, the organisation tried something new when they hired a nutritionist. Players were invited in the off-season to sit in and be a part of the interview process as well.<\/li>\n<li>How are you approaching the process of engaging and encouraging people who might be most resistant to change?<\/li>\n<li>At Aberdeen this process led to 95% approval rating of the process\/exercise. It\u2019s crucial to ensure that everyone is bought in.<\/li>\n<li>Does everyone within your team or organisation know the full picture? It\u2019s crucial to have clear communication around this and also ensure that the picture is crystal clear.<\/li>\n<li>At Stuttgart, the organisation asked the coaches and staff what they are doing for their players and to whom they are accountable &#8211; more useful than asking what you expect from the players alone. Staff were afraid at first but two years in they better understand how we\u2019ve established our values and expectations.<\/li>\n<li>How do you build communication; not only what you talk about but how do you foster those times where communication can be created?<\/li>\n<li>At the Cowboys for example, there was a focus on communicating nutrition education. Minute-long videos were created for the players iPads to sit along their playbooks, allowing them to click through on their downtime, and improve the opportunity to better educate the athletes on best practices.<\/li>\n<li>Seek early wins to prove value of getting around the table. There is a benefit to more structured meetings as opposed to ad hoc, which excluded key people from the decision-making process.<\/li>\n<li>Aberdeen started a group called \u2018Winning Moments\u2019 and it allowed ad hoc conversations to take place, as well as the sharing of articles and brainstorms. The organisation also included individuals who weren\u2019t directly aligned with that team to bring in new ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Challenge 3:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How do we create and deliver our high performance environment to be the best it can be? What are we focusing on?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For Man City this is a transition year with lots of realignment going on. They are seeking opportunities and thinking further ahead about trends need to keep tabs on e.g. data usage and sports science research into women\u2019s sport.<\/li>\n<li>Make urgency a theme of your organisational philosophy.<\/li>\n<li>Defining the culture going forward and an undercurrent of expressing this in each department. Also a big focus on relationships and strengthening our ability to communicate this to ourselves. It\u2019s new but the goal is to make our club more cohesive.<\/li>\n<li>Breaking down what a high performance environment actually means; looking at strategy, infrastructure; do we have the right people? Are we giving them the right opportunities and inspiring them?<\/li>\n<li>A focus on team competence, so that they can bring what they know to the team, that they know they can influence the process.
