How can we enhance skill development internally with the added influence of external skill coaches utilised by athletes?<\/li>\n<li>Create opportunities for your coaches to get out of their own bubble and coach in different sports and environments.<\/li>\n<li>Performance in the future &#8211; what does it look like and where do we fit \u2013 what\u2019s human and what\u2019s not?<\/li>\n<li>What will the coach of the future look like? What and how can we influence and create opportunities that will inevitably prepare them for the future?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Challenge 1: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>What additional skill sets and knowledge will the coach of the future need that don\u2019t exist today and how do we develop them?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The thinking around this challenge is trying to paint a picture of what the coach of future will need to be successful, focusing on skillsets and knowledge that they don\u2019t have now.<\/li>\n<li>How do we bridge the gap and work with coaches who are already established across technical and tactical aspects, but what education and development can we give them to progress them forward?<\/li>\n<li>A common trend identified when asking other coaches what their most valuable learning experience \u2013 failure was the most influential part of their development.<\/li>\n<li>Elite coaches are now getting less time to be able to get results and perform. There is continuing pressures to get immediate results \u2013 so looking ahead skills such as being able to handle those pressures and look at an approach geared towards immediate results rather than the long game.<\/li>\n<li>One thing to consider is the relationship with individual skill coaching and team coaching. In team sports, if it more aligned with influencing, whereas the individual skills coaches are going to need to take a more holistic approach, with themes such as integration of technology. There is going to become a more evident difference between the two.<\/li>\n<li>It is also thinking about the perspective beyond the sport. Having a perspective beyond the sport can take someone further in the game. There is a qualification of the profession which we need to move towards if we are striving for credibility in the future.<\/li>\n<li>One of the things that stood out at the summit in London was how a lot of organisations, especially down under, are looking at themes such as player welfare as a performance factor, not just a duty of care. This is an area for opportunity and a skillset which a lot of coaches don\u2019t have.<\/li>\n<li>The capacity to perform has so much crossover with what is happening elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li>It also important to model this at a coaching level as well, rather than just focuses on the players.<\/li>\n<li>There is a sense that a trend is to return to prioritising coaching with so many distractions around athletes.<\/li>\n<li>There is also a trend and a challenge for coaches in teams where individual athletes have their own skill and mastery coaches, who need to be fed into the conversations. This is even happening at the academy level as well.<\/li>\n<li>Coaching is without question becoming more specialised with a wider focus on performance.<\/li>\n<li>A concern with specialised coaches coming in is connection. There is more of an opportunity to develop relationships with team coaches. How does this effect team dynamics and cohesion and should it be on the organisation to provide that skill based element that could be outsourced?<\/li>\n<li>In football\/soccer there is a more generalist approach to coaching, where the focus is currently more on developing those coaches to be able to support skill development.<\/li>\n<li>It is important to encourage connection outside our own bubbles with different sports who similar environments. Often the disciplines are different but the processes are quite similar.<\/li>\n<li>One of the first experiences a level four coach had in cricket in the UK was coaching in a different sport.<\/li>\n<li>It can be really impactful peeling away from your own onion and making those coaches performance experiences truly valuable by experiencing different environments.<\/li>\n<li>If you give coaches opportunity, the first thing they want to do is pursue within their own sports, however the margins aren\u2019t as great as people think, the real value is in their ability to coach and by taking them out of their natural environment, you are removing the opportunity for them to just talk about their specific sport.<\/li>\n<li>The biggest development can take place in the art of coaching and learning, so it\u2019s about gently pushing coaches into that space because they don\u2019t see initial value.<\/li>\n<li>Other skillsets such as business and leadership can really add value to what coaches are doing<\/li>\n<li>Underpinning coaching principles are similar, but the difference is in the ability to teach and communicate. In athletic performance, teams are getting bigger, so skills such as the ability to lead, teach and communicate are becoming increasingly important.<\/li>\n<li>Elite coaches like to work together but the issue is that they sometimes only see each other on game day. Perhaps we undervalue the idea of bringing our own people together, because we think they are together but they are not.<\/li>\n<li>In 10 years\u2019 time there is going to be even more data available, coaching teams are going to be bigger, I think there\u2019s going to be a real challenge for coaches to understand what is the most important thing to get results.<\/li>\n<li>At the BMW Design Thinking team they talk about co-workers. There is also a large robotics, so flipping it back to sport and coaching in particular, what role for example could AI have.<\/li>\n<li>BMW landed on the idea of absolute clarity around what success looks like \u2013 which elements reach excellence through computability and machinery versus that what is hand crafted.<\/li>\n<li>Performance in the future &#8211; what does it look like and where do we fit \u2013 what\u2019s human and what\u2019s not?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>How do you maintain focus on people, practice and process when supposedly, performance is all about winning?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have to move beyond the concept of performance being all about winning, especially with teams who are in transition where it is more about the plans and processes.<\/li>\n<li>Coaches need to develop a skillset that is able to offset some of the external noise and redefine winning, which is a finite thing \u2013 how do we try and support coaches with the notion that it never ending?<\/li>\n<li>We know it is process and outcome orientated, but outside the coaching bubble, it\u2019s the \u2018W\u2019 that really matters \u2013 a challenge is what can we do with our coaches to give them confidence to evaluate their processes so then the system can evaluate them so they can get better.<\/li>\n<li>Influence is a big thing as well, and actually explaining the context behind the process.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important especially in youth setups not to get the development side of the sport mixed up with the elite side. Winning and losing is part of the development, you\u2019ve got to learn to lose.<\/li>\n<li>Winning is important but the aspect of \u2018it\u2019s all about\u2019 is something to challenge. Winning is crucial, but the \u2018it\u2019s all about\u2019 should refer to the learning and developmental experiences. Evaluate the success on the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 3: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>The creation\/access to opportunities that coaches are afforded. We can continually develop and train however often there is simply not opportunities to progress and this can stem motivation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It has been a topic of conversation throughout but the idea of influencing from the decision makers is one thing to identify.<\/li>\n<li>There is a personal growth piece, the second is around the connection and influence that we can provide and the third is \u2018what does a new challenge look like?\u2019 In the AFL the coaches on the level four programme were encouraged to think way back down the pathway and work back in the grassroots.
