Throughout the discussion, the challenge of what to measure and how to monitor wellbeing in our organisations remained prevalent. What does your sport require on the field that can be impacted off it?<\/li>\n<li>Systems of communication. Organisations have this information, who does it go to, how does it get to the player and how do you ensure everyone is in concert?<\/li>\n<li>Developing an all-encompassing metric where a coach can get the quickest information possible.<\/li>\n<li>Organisational culture and fostering vulnerability within your environment where players are comfortable with these kinds of assessments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Challenge 1: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>What exactly does wellness mean and what tools can we use to monitor and measure it besides surveys?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is an understanding in some organisations that wellness primarily relates to resilience and overcoming challenges and that there isn\u2019t much of a discussion outside of those areas.<\/li>\n<li>Approaches to wellness should be much more comprehensive than just annual evaluations. They should become a key component of your overall high performance strategy.<\/li>\n<li>How as a collective are we acting and doing things that not only put out fires in terms of mental health and emotional crisis, but how do we cultivate the organisational culture we are in?<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s not always to do with what we do with the individual people we work with, but the space in between them we should look at and approach with a mindset of wellbeing, which can impact performance and success.<\/li>\n<li>Wellness in baseball is looked at daily throughout the season. Where are your athletes on the stress continuum and where are they on the rest and fatigue continuum?<\/li>\n<li>At present, do you look at wellbeing more from the performance side or more holistically? How do we get a better sense of the person outside of the athlete?<\/li>\n<li>One approach to better understand the person outside of the athlete is to do something as simple as on the evening of every training night, for 10 minutes, give them one topic to discuss to nurture relationships. Do you get higher levels of performance when there are more meaningful relationships within the playing group?<\/li>\n<li>Understand each individual players\u2019 \u2018why\u2019 and get the other athletes to understand that as well.<\/li>\n<li>Do you understand what your athlete\u2019s and staff look like on a good day vs. a bad day?<\/li>\n<li>The FA has put together a staff development programme around the rationale that everyone spends so much time away, so it was a very of understanding how everyone operates and what we want to stand for.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s a simple theme, but are your organisations actually recognising and giving awareness to wellbeing practices?<\/li>\n<li>In rugby there is an acknowledgement of the load and stress the players go through at the highest level. Ensure you introducing an element of fun in your training and wider culture.<\/li>\n<li>Scotland Rugby start every major team meeting with a one-on-one challenge to drive camaraderie.<\/li>\n<li>There has been a history of collecting data and going through the motions without knowing what the actual question is you are trying to answer.<\/li>\n<li>There is a challenge with getting athletes to input accurate, reliable data. There is a mindset that it could be used against them, so very important to create a safe environment to ultimately provide you with better data.<\/li>\n<li>Crucial to educate athletes that monitoring is important, valued and can lead to the identification of performance gains.<\/li>\n<li>Be conscious of if there is not a joint up approach of the staff, it can be overwhelming with the amount of touch points and activities the modern athlete is expected to be active with.<\/li>\n<li>There is a balancing act between what is the right amount of activity during a day and what is too much? Important to spend time reviewing and evaluating after training camps etc. to collate insight from athletes and staff.<\/li>\n<li>What did the athlete take away from training camp from a personal point of view, rather than just an athlete perspective? This will aid future planning processes.<\/li>\n<li>At Brighton, wellness signifies a readiness to train with regard to risk management; for athletes to perform tasks each day to the best of their ability. They do a battery of tests every morning, setting a baseline in pre-season and check how it measures up with their wellness questionnaires.<\/li>\n<li>The pillars of physical, spiritual and mental all play a part in human wellness. It requires a holistic approach that works for the individual.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 2: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Working with players one on one when they\u2019re very apprehensive of not wanting those that run the organisation and determine their futures to know what their emotional states are &#8211; what if the player doesn\u2019t want that help? What if the culture is not a safe space to measure fears, stresses etc.?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There\u2019s a difference between team and individual athletes and your ability to implement processes within the culture that you\u2019re working; the solution is to educate the players from day one in pre-season &#8211; they have a full understanding before we start collating.<\/li>\n<li>Athletes have lives outside sport and it\u2019s important to be aware of that and that the team get to know the players or group well. This is key if they do not voice their concerns directly; soft skills are as important objective measurements.<\/li>\n<li>You may receive important information or requests for help via WhatsApp or other applications: monitoring is good, but the greatest insights come from conversations, particularly in female environments.<\/li>\n<li>It boils down to priorities with each player. Some will open up, some won\u2019t and so wellness markers are important.<\/li>\n<li>It is important for athletes to take responsibility and make decisions; this means they need to be well informed and educated; you may not be exhausted and incapable of performing, we just may need to alter how you perform.<\/li>\n<li>Objective monitoring is most useful during when you can provide players with a summary at the end; you responded well here etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Challenge 3: <\/u><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been examples of where players have gone through the motions when it comes to data. How can you achieve buy-in with players who have had bad experiences?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Building a culture of monitoring takes time to establish; the battery of tests, processes, monitoring etc. Feedback is great and there is a sign when athletes are asking for more and we\u2019ve adapted accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Education is important, how data is accessed and why; there is no public gallery, it is individually reviewed.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to have staff with defined roles and responsibilities so that things aren\u2019t missed; there\u2019s more scope to do this in a bigger team.<\/li>\n<li>There has to be a level of compromise; we don\u2019t make it too time-consuming.
