It\u2019s become a buzz word both in sport and in the general public but we&#8217;re starting to understand more around the space of wellness and how this can impact performance.\u00a0Being able to constantly perform at the optimum level remains one of the biggest challenges. How do we create a framework as a foundation, which can then be tailored depending on the above factors?<\/li>\n<li>Fostering a Culture of Wellbeing: how do we create a shared language and alignment amongst all departments and make it a mainstay within our culture?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Challenge 1:<\/strong> <\/u><\/p>\n<p>Communication and clarification of what \u201cwellbeing\u201d is and how it\u2019s complementary to what has taken place in the organisation and\/or sport in general.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is wellbeing? How similar is it to sports psychology?<\/li>\n<li>How do we view the relationship between a performance-based environment and protecting the trust of the athletes \u2013 what should those who work directly with the athletes know?<\/li>\n<li>A challenge is how to communicate and align everyone across the organisation to ensure it\u2019s not becoming siloed.<\/li>\n<li>Having a functional interdisciplinary approach is paramount. That requires a commitment from the practitioners within the organisation, which often can be missing.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s also very important to ensure that your wellbeing approach and strategy is clearly communicated to new recruits, especially those who have perhaps coming from a lesser-resourced organisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u><strong>Challenge 2:<\/strong> <\/u><\/p>\n<p>When measuring &amp; monitoring wellness, should we consider developmental differences? In other words, should we measure &amp; monitor the same things for youth athletes as elite athletes?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Should the same methodologies be used in evaluating wellness and wellbeing in diverse groups of athletes or do we think a separate development strategy should be created and implemented?<\/li>\n<li>This is a challenging topic due to the amount of departments and personnel in modern day sporting organisations who operate with a variety of age groups (for example scouting pre-draft or development departments with those who are just joining or who are already in the building).<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about measuring and monitoring, it\u2019s important to think about what is the outcome we seek?<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s then important for each department to identify for themselves what their outcomes are with regards to wellness evaluation, and then to work on educating and aligning each department as a collective.<\/li>\n<li>At Leaders in Chicago this year we spoke about \u2018left of bloom and right of bloom tactics\u2019 \u2013 meaning preventative rather than reactionary. Would providing tools to navigate this space during their developmental stages be more valuable?<\/li>\n<li>The education of the staff is crucial with those athletes in the developmental stages. Have you considered bringing in different experts to help understand the different stages?<\/li>\n<li>Many of our organisations have outstanding in-house resources like sports psychologists, mental conditioning coaches etc. that our players could be visiting more frequently. A challenge is how do you get players comfortable with utilising these resources?<\/li>\n<li>An area to consider is perhaps how much of the work done in this space is educationally group-based rather than targeting specific individuals and working one on one.<\/li>\n<li>Manchester City has a dedicated programme called \u2018City PASS\u2019 \u2013 Player, Advanced, Safety &amp; Support. This programme was set up by the sports psychology department, but there are also other gatekeepers from other departments who can feed information in. Does your organisation have a dedicated programme to support athlete wellbeing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Challenge 3:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What are we monitoring and how are we measuring wellbeing?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the primary outcome we are seeking and how can that impact the decision making process?<\/li>\n<li>Many individuals operating within this space are qualitative researchers, so there is some scepticism around the use of analytics and what a survey really presents.<\/li>\n<li>The suggestion amongst the group was that the process of monitoring and measuring needs to be customised. Our sports and market places require unique skillsets to be able to perform.<\/li>\n<li>At the combine a number of questions were used in recruitment interviews that were suggested by current players to gather their opinions \u2013 for example \u2018what do you guys think makes someone successful?\u2019 The organisation then worked to design a measuring scale around 4-5 criteria which would make a person \u2018hireable &amp; coachable\u2019. The criteria included:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Intelligence (can they process feedback \/ think on their own \/ can they handle the pace of the environment they are expected to learn in?)<\/li>\n<li>Personal Accountability (can they stand on their own two feet as young people and take responsibility for their on field performance, as well as off field lifestyle).<\/li>\n<li>Resilience &amp; Grit (this came from subjective interpretation of the player).<\/li>\n<li>Being a Good Teammate (likeability as a teammate).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The Premier League has recently implemented a wellbeing screening, whereby the player\u2019s rate themselves. Important to have good alignment between organisation and governing body to share insight.<\/li>\n<li>Are you thinking about the athlete of the future and how you can get them there? Is there certain criteria you have identified around this space that would make an all-rounded athlete?<\/li>\n<li>There is a challenge around daily wellness questionnaires and monitoring and the scalability of this. How can we create an efficient process to collate actionable insight from this data?<\/li>\n<li>The challenge with wellness questionnaires, it is not perceived to be a safe space to expose their vulnerability, especially in a high pressure, high stakes environment.
