Often we become short-sighted by this and forget about getting the basics right first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Thinking Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the technology you are being offered or that you are evaluating actually valid to you and your organization? Too often we skip the first step of whether it is actually relevant to our objectives.<\/li>\n<li>What utility does this technology have to you as a group which can then be provided to a coach or a certain scenario?<\/li>\n<li>In numerous sports, there is a huge amount of information and it is really important to know exactly what you are looking for, particularly from a coach\u2019s point of view.<\/li>\n<li>One thing you can\u2019t see through stats for example is pressure in a certain context. Important to really understand the athlete to gain insight into their soft skills &amp; personalities.<\/li>\n<li>Too much raw data can be incredibly overwhelming, so it needs to be filtered by the coach by asking good questions.<\/li>\n<li>There have been instances where coaches have been looking a pieces of paper in training rather than fixating on the players \u2013 we often forget that there are people in front of us that are actually in a pressure situation or certain dynamic. Data can\u2019t solve everything.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of the data we collate tends to confirm what we already know. It\u2019s great that we can use the data to inform athletes and use it contextually to explain what you as a coach think might be happening in their game.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s also important to reinforce positive data with an athlete. How much of our feedback is actually based around negative data?<\/li>\n<li>Soft skills, especially when interacting with athletes cannot be understated. It\u2019s crucial to not make them feel like an in-human commodity that\u2019s being poked, prodded and measured. It\u2019s a balancing act between keeping them human and utilizing the data-driven feedback efficiently.<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about soft skills, language is an important cog. Use more of \u2018we\u2019, which can help getting through tougher situations than using words like \u2018you\u2019 and \u2018I\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>When presenting feedback through the means of data, we need to make sure we are clean when providing context to the athlete and help them in their decision making. Education is very important in this process.<\/li>\n<li>There is a challenge in educating more experienced staff who have been doing this for a long time and trying to shift the mindset of making data and other innovations part of their process.
