Before we get to the event, we have taken the time as always to review some of the key learnings and conversations that our Leaders Performance Institute members have participated in throughout the month of October. There remains plenty of opportunity throughout the remainder of 2022, notably the event in a couple of weeks\u2019 time and the remaining virtual roundtables.<\/h6>\n<p>We hope our key takeaways from across the Leaders Performance Institute from the month of October keeps you on the pulse with contemporary thinking across the high performance space and provides you with some inspiration to engage with the variety of opportunities on offer through your membership.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some of the threads of conversation that have stood out for us across the last few weeks, with a large focus on our most recent virtual roundtables. We also quickly revisit 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaders Sport Performance Summit: 2021 review<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are two weeks away from our Leaders Sport Performance Summit at Twickenham Stadium \u2013 we look forward to seeing many of you there for learning, connection and plenty of conversation. To whet your appetite ahead of the summit this year, we thought we\u2019d take a glimpse back at some of our favourite thinking points from last year\u2019s summit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Empowerment for players:<\/strong> how often do coaches say they want to be challenged but don\u2019t mean it? It is important to lean on experienced heads (players) who have lived and breathed the environment.\u00a0Create coach and player alignment through opportunities to sit and have conversation about the challenges ahead. &#8216;What are our derailers?&#8217; \u2013 this was something rugby club Harlequins talked about onstage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learning to learn:<\/strong> The Royal Ballet and Royal College of Music [RCM] explained how students haven&#8217;t actually been taught how to practise and learn properly. &#8216;The Practice Process&#8217; is integrated into their curriculums. The RCM even use simulation to helps students to practise performance in a &#8216;live environment&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Belonging &amp; story:<\/strong> the DNA of an organisation or team can get lost over time. Reflect back on the identity you have inherited. What needs mentioning now so the people who come after us have everything they need to succeed? Look to the past to see if it helps with shaping the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environment:<\/strong> 70% of behaviours are shaped by the environment you&#8217;re in. Before blaming an individual for making a mistake, reflect upon whether the environment is setup for success or failure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The meaning of diversity:<\/strong> ED&amp;I needs to mean something to everyone in the organisation, you have to feel it. English Premier League club Brentford FC explained onstage that every member of the organisation has objectives and KPIs around ED&amp;I. This makes it relevant to the individual and creates a level of accountability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Virtual Roundtables:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As usual, three virtual roundtables took place in the month of October. The first was a topic-led conversation focused on innovation, the second saw Leaders Performance Institute advisor Dr David Fletcher wrap up the final Performance Support Series of the year as he continued to expand our thinking around the topic of evolving team culture. The third came in the form of our penultimate Leadership Skills Series session on working with metaphor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where Are We Innovating, and How?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We hosted a topic-led virtual roundtable with the title: <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/five-ways-leaders-performance-institute-members-are-innovating-within-their-teams\/\">\u2018Where are we Innovating, and How?\u2019<\/a> in order to find out the key things that our members are currently doing that are both innovative and having the most impact on performance. The discussion covered considerable ground but here we have picked out four practical innovations that you may want to consider with your team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coaching cells <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a desire amongst coaches to share insights and talk to other coaches about coaching, but they\u2019re always too busy to make this a priority. One organisation creates the intervention to make sure this happens.<\/li>\n<li>This organisation puts coaches into small cells of five or six, grouped by similar sports. Each time a different coach hosts a cell, they send a primer pre session, come with video examples, or an intentional performance problem and talk with the other coaches about it.<\/li>\n<li>The outcome is active problem solving and the generation of ideas. They then use the academic school to observe the sessions and take notes, give feedback, and assess the longer term effectiveness of the cells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u2018The edit floor\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One team encourages staff to present on one idea they didn\u2019t bring to the table. This stops people from just having tunnel vision on one idea and not thinking about anything else.<\/li>\n<li>It forces them to have multiple ideas and for things to be really thought through which also shows critical thinking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Formalise the injury time as an innovation window <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Utilise the time when athletes are injured to innovate and try something different that you wouldn\u2019t otherwise have time to dedicate to.<\/li>\n<li>One team has a transition strategy from each year group, as well as a long-term injury transition strategy. Who owns and drives the injury transition window?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Share your learnings<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the first Monday of every month, sit down as a team, create a one-page document on what you\u2019ve done to develop yourself over the last month.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Performance pulses\u2019: any interaction, something they\u2019ve read they put in an email and sent out to the team to share insights, leads to further coffee conversations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Practicalities of Evolving Team Culture: Session 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was the final session in our <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/what-is-the-difference-between-a-learning-culture-and-organisational-learning\/\">three-part series<\/a> with Leaders Performance Advisor David Fletcher, a performance psychologist at Loughborough University. Here are some of the key points we picked out from this final session.<\/p>\n<p>There are four main areas of focus around culture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Achievement<\/strong> \u2013 focus on productivity and goal achievement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wellbeing<\/strong> \u2013 focus on the development of people within the organisation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovation<\/strong> \u2013 focus on creativity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internal processes<\/strong> \u2013 focus on formulation and internal control of systems and procedures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cultures that \u2018win well\u2019 vs those who don\u2019t:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is not winning at all costs, it\u2019s ensuring that the team is performing but wellbeing is not being compromised in the process.<\/li>\n<li>Are achievement and wellbeing competing with one another or do they go hand in hand?<\/li>\n<li>High challenge, high support = facilitative and ethical.<\/li>\n<li>High challenge, moderate support = suboptimal and borderline.<\/li>\n<li>High challenge, low support = distressing and unacceptable.<\/li>\n<li>Abusive = harmful and unethical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Discussion points: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are the characteristics of performance cultures?<\/li>\n<li>What ends up tipping something from a facilitative environment to a suboptimal or, even worse, to an abusive environment?<\/li>\n<li>Is it a case of them being on a continuum and you can have a high challenge, high support environment with pockets of abuse taking place?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The high performance environment scan: a diagnostic tool to measure the constructs within the model.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assessment of the perceptions of employees involved in mergers and acquisitions.<\/li>\n<li>A framework to construct a people development strategy.<\/li>\n<li>To benchmark against competitors.<\/li>\n<li>To address under performance.<\/li>\n<li>To understand intra-organisational performance discrepancies.<\/li>\n<li>To demonstrate organisational health in order to secure financial investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Leadership Skills Series: Working with Metaphor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Within this edition of the Leadership Skills Series, we looked at how our members can utilise <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/why-metaphors-have-the-power-to-help-your-team\/\">the power of metaphor<\/a> to help galvanise their teams and build deeper relationships with individuals so to further enhance performance.<\/p>\n<p>Metaphor operates at every level:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intrapersonal <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beware of the internal monologue we have.<\/li>\n<li>What metaphors are we using about ourselves and our experience at any given time? How might they be helping or hindering us?<\/li>\n<li>Every conversation provides a blueprint for the future \u2013 as true for ourselves internally as externally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Interpersonal<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Between people.<\/li>\n<li>If we are present and really listening, we can show we care, build genuine trust with others by picking up on the metaphors they use and by being curious about those metaphors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Groups \u2013 Team or Organisation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Utilising metaphor as a motivation for the group on a daily basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Four organisational metaphors:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Family<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Belonging, caring, home, matriarch, father figure, rifts.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Political System<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Influencing stakeholders, get buy-in, alignment, witch hunt.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Machine<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Well-oiled, reliable, in need of a service, switch off.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Army<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Take no prisoners, win-at-all-costs, in the trenches, uphill battle, hold fire, front line workers, well-drilled.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n                                <\/div>\n                            \n                            \n                            \n                                                    <\/div>\n                                        <div class=\"col visibly-hidden col--flex-align-right\">\n                                            <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"featured_media":13634,"menu_order":0,"template":"","categories":[22,20],"pathway":[],"topic":[],"sport":[],"class_list":["post-13633","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-coaching-development-performance","category-leadership-culture-performance"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
