If you were a footballer at the Adelaide Football Club, and Senior Coach Don Pyke told you one thing, it is all but certain you would also hear something similar from his assistants, the strength & conditioning team and pretty much everyone else on the performance payroll at West Lakes.<\/h4>\n

This has become a point of pride for Pyke, the subject of our latest cover story, as he seeks to build on the Crows\u2019 appearance in a first AFL Grand Final in 19 years. \u201cWe believe that amplification comes from that,\u201d he says with emphasis. \u201cThe players are receiving a clear message of what is expected of them at this footy club.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pyke and his staff are holding their players to account against their goals as athletes. This blanket approach works when the players can see they are the ultimate beneficiaries of Pyke\u2019s performance pointers. \u201cIt is only natural that the next port of call will be your improvement as a footballer,\u201d commented Crows key forward Josh Jenkins, of the Pyke approach.<\/p>\n

In skilful hands, a resonant coaching message becomes a means of fostering a positive atmosphere and encourages the players to double down on their commitment to the common cause. Engagement increases and a culture can be transformed.<\/p>\n

That is not to say things will always be harmonious. Indeed, as bestselling author Daniel Coyle argues elsewhere in this edition, \u201cculture is a living thing; a set of relationships walking towards a goal and, like any relationship, there are constant tensions and problems that come up and great cultures are able to deal with them in a more knowing, direct, intentional way than the rest of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
