What\u2019s in a Name?<\/h4>\n

For my sins, I\u2019m a fan of Arsenal Football Club. I\u2019m not the only one here at the Leaders Performance Institute. Over the last decade, my colleagues and I have become accustomed to a particular type of experience following our team. The season starts brightly, a few landmark performances, a shot or two of liquid football, before the inevitable series of dispiriting defeats, perhaps an injury crisis, certainly a crisis of confidence, and then, ultimately, a fourth-place league finish. The pattern has become so familiar, so seemingly inevitable, that there\u2019s an easily understandable adjective for it all: that\u2019s so Arsenal. It\u2019s become part of the identity of the club. It\u2019s a self-fulfilling concept, and a powerful one, but it doesn\u2019t always have to be negative.<\/h4>\n

The great Manchester United teams of Sir Alex Ferguson made a habit of scoring in \u2018Fergie time\u2019 \u2013the generously extended period of additional time following the regulation 90 minutes. It became a \u2018thing\u2019, got a name and became more of a thing and thereby self-fulfilling.<\/p>\n

Pro12 rugby union team the Glasgow Warriors have their own version of Fergie time. Many teams are told they\u2019re fitter and can work harder than the opposition, but the Warriors believe it \u2013 and have made a habit of making decisive scores in the final ten minutes of games. That final period of extra collective effort, concentration and application has been given a name internally: \u2018Warrior time\u2019. By giving a proprietary term to a collective positive behaviour and mindset, that behaviour and mindset is reinforced and amplified.<\/p>\n

To return to familiar and dispiriting patterns, as of the start of the 2016 Major League Baseball season, the Chicago Cubs had gone a staggering 108 years without a World Series win. Elsewhere in these pages, Josh Lifrak, Director of the franchise\u2019s Mental Skills Program, explains how the pattern was shattered this year partly through a collective adherence to a proprietary set of behaviours handily known as \u2018being CUB\u2019. Those behaviours: courage, urgency, belief.<\/p>\n
