Chris Boyd on transforming the Hurricanes’ culture and delivering their maiden Super Rugby championship<\/p>\n \n \n \n

Complacency is the enemy of performance, the surreptitious snake that constricts improvement slowly but surely. Guarding against complacency, preventing the spread of so-called \u2018success disease\u2019, is all-important in the development of a winning culture. Keeping athletes, coaches, employees on their toes is a quotidian but crucial task for a leader in any field.<\/h4>\n
\n

Our cover star in this edition of Performance<\/em> has a particularly empowering way of doing just that. Chris Boyd guided the Wellington-based Hurricanes to their first Super Rugby championship win this past season. The Kiwi Head Coach is a no-nonsense kind of chap. But he has fostered a culture of discipline such that he doesn\u2019t, personally, need to act as a disciplinarian. \u201cA culture of discipline,\u201d he explains, \u201cneeds no rules.\u201d The players are empowered, drive their own culture, and keep each other on their toes.<\/p>\n

Of course, if complacency does creep in, personnel changes are often around the corner. Managers in elite sport have ever-shorter windows of time to address slumps in performance before they face the chop. Directors in European soccer in particular will often look for the \u2018new manager bounce\u2019. The phenomenon is disputed by stats-driven performance analysts such as Blake Wooster, an insightful guest contributor to Performance<\/em> in this edition, but it has seeped into the accepted collective wisdom of the wider soccer industry. One Premier League manager is even looking to gain a competitive edge this year by using a psychologist to identify and artificially replicate the attitudinal changes that take place across an organisation enjoying a \u2018new manager bounce\u2019.<\/p>\n

No such bounce here at the Leaders Performance Institute, but, as Performance<\/em> celebrates its third anniversary, we are mixing things up ever so slightly.
