In February alone, we will host <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/leaders-events\/leaders-meet-high-performance-environments\/\">Leaders Meet: High Performance Environments<\/a> at The Glasshouse in Melbourne (8-9 February), while Leaders Performance Advisor Dr Meg Popovic continues her <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/leaders-events\/the-performance-paradox-session-two\/\">Performance Support Series<\/a> (16 February; see below for a rundown of session one). We will also explore <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/leaders-events\/coach-development-at-the-australian-institute-of-sport\/\">coach development at the Australian Institute of Sport<\/a> in a virtual roundtable format (23 February). We were delighted to see that many of you attended our first <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/leaders-events\/leadership-skills-series-facilitating-great-conversations\/\">Leadership Skills Series<\/a> session on 1 February. That online session took place yesterday at the time of writing and the topic at hand was \u2018facilitating great conversations\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to January for a moment, we review some of the threads and key conversations that emerged from our three virtual roundtables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Balancing Wellbeing and Performance\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our first topic-led virtual roundtable for 2023 looked at how our members were <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/striking-the-balance-between-wellbeing-and-performance\/\">balancing wellbeing and performance<\/a>. We have seen a shift away from the \u2018win at all cost\u2019 mentality towards more \u2018winning well\u2019 but understand elite sport is a results-driven industry, so we asked our members what they were doing to continue to push for high performance whilst also ensuring wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion spanned many different areas, but we have picked out three key ways in which our members were able to balance wellbeing with performance:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The importance of language<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The difference in changing one word from \u2018the\u2019 wellbeing approach to \u2018our\u2019 wellbeing approach, and what an impact that can have. \u2018Human optimisation vs wellbeing.\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Being intentional with the language we use. Seeing wellbeing as an enhancer rather than an inhibitor of performance. Shift this narrative from within the coaches and staff so that they can champion the messages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Whole club approach<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Have wellbeing integrated into everyday life in the organisation, and engrained in the fabric of everything they do.<\/li>\n<li>Weekly staff meetings \u2013 sharing of information around player and if there are any red flags. Start with injured players as this could be a difficult time for them and their mental wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li>Informing and educating the environment so that the more people who understand the better. Mental Health First Aid training for staff, providing a bigger network of people caring for one another, whilst also supporting existing relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Stress. Recover. Support<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>It is important to prepare the athletes for adversity and build the resilience to be successful in the high performance world, but then allow them times to recover and make them feel supported.<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging an environment of High Challenge with High Support.<\/li>\n<li>Coaching the coaches to understand this process and to weave wellbeing and the messaging into their environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u2018Player Evaluation: Now vs Potential\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/four-factors-when-weighing-up-current-performance-and-future-potential\/\">Understanding where talent is now versus future potential<\/a> is a constant question within much of our membership here at the Leaders Performance Institute. Therefore, we dedicated this topic-led roundtable to that very topic.<\/p>\n<p>We picked out two key areas that were discussed in depth:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What does it take to win?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding what the key characteristics are within your sport that are more likely to lead to success. This can be physical, technical\/tactical attributes, but most importantly in many cases, the psychological or behavioural traits which are harder to quantify. Gathering as much data on the athletes in relation to these as possible and track these over a long period of time.<\/li>\n<li>Performance, Physicality, Personality. One organisation explained how they grouped their key traits into these three headings, and they are then mapped out as current vs potential. Some elements of these continuously develop and some cap out. Therefore it is important to figure out where they are in that stage, knowing how much opportunity there is left for growth or development allows you to make a more informed decision on the player.<\/li>\n<li>Elite Performance Qualities. This is a tool one of our members use to rate the players and evaluate their performance. The players are asked to rate themselves based on some key characteristics such as teamwork, competitiveness and adaptability. The coaches or leadership group then also rate the player, and the most important part is then the discussion between coaches and player about the ratings. The power is in the conversation and understanding the players better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Individual Development Plans (IDPs)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Have IDPs as player led exercises, rather than coach led. Have the athletes become an integral part of this process, where ideally the player is bought in and contributing or co-creating the plan.<\/li>\n<li>Understanding the athlete\u2019s capacity to learn is critical in understanding their potential. In their IDP, instead of having ten areas of focus, have one or two goals at a time, so you can assess how quickly they progress and learn. Also assigning a practitioner as a mentor to help them with that main goal will enable them to be more effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u2018Performance Support Series: The Performance Paradox \u2013 Session 1\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was session one of our first Performance Support Series of the year, which focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/what-are-your-trade-offs-in-the-quest-for-success\/\">\u2018The Performance Paradox\u2019<\/a>. Across these sessions, which are led by our Performance Advisor and Performance Expert Dr Meg Popovic, the aim is to explore the trade-offs, and considerations in the quest to win for staff, athletes, and their wider organization.<\/p>\n<p>We have pulled out some of the key themes from Meg\u2019s first session:<\/p>\n<p>Definition of &#8216;paradox&#8217;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true.<\/li>\n<li>A situation, person, or thing that combines contradictory features or qualities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How does paradox connect with transformation and learning?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Individuals who consciously accept the chrysalis, whether in analysis or in life experience, have accepted the life\/death paradox, a paradox which returns in a different form at each new spiral of growth.<\/li>\n<li>If we accept this paradox, we are not torn to pieces by what seems to be intolerable contradiction. Birth is the death of the life we have known; death is the birth of the life we have yet to live.<\/li>\n<li>We need to hold the tensions and allow our circuit to give way to a larger circumference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meg reintroduced the concept of \u2018shadow work\u2019, which she also discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/how-can-you-better-support-the-subcultures-within-your-teams\/\">last year<\/a>. It is the practice of working to illuminate the aspects of yourself that you bury or repress. It comes from \u2018depth psychology\u2019, which is defined by Susan Clayton and Gene Meyers as \u2018the psychological theory that explores the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious as well as the patterns and dynamics of motivation and the mind\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Establishing the known and the unknown:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conscious \u2013 ego<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Parts of self or group that are fully aware of and present to the world.<\/li>\n<li>Our values, our thoughts, our goals, our fears, our strengths.<\/li>\n<li>Includes the negative qualities that we own\/take responsibility for (are conscious of).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Unconscious \u2013 shadow<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not presently conscious of, or within our awareness, or suppressed for some reason.<\/li>\n<li>Impact emotions and actions, whether we are aware of it or not.<\/li>\n<li>The part of the ego we repress; what we cannot acknowledge about ourselves.<\/li>\n<li>Often thought of as dark parts of self or group, but not accurate \u2013 neither good nor bad, just <em>is<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Task 1: Spend some time on your own, think of an example within your environments of the known and the unknown, the conscious and unconscious, the contradictory tensions that exist. Within small groups, share your insights with your team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Miracle of Paradox\u201d \u2013 from <em>Owning the Shadow <\/em>by Robert Johnson<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A huge amount of energy is wasted by modern people in opposing their own situation.
