For those of you unable to attend the event in Australia, we have picked out some of our favourite reflections from the event, accompanied by the usual insights into key takeaways from across our virtual roundtables that took place in February.<\/h6>\n<p>Finally, Community Groups returned to action for the first time in 2023, so we have included a few hot topics from those respective groups which will shape conversations moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>We hope that our key takeaways keep on the pulse with contemporary thinking across the high performance space and provides you with some inspiration to engage with the variety of opportunities on offer through your membership.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some of the threads of conversation that have stood out to us across the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leaders Meet: High Performance Environments (Melbourne)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was fantastic to be able to host our first-ever Leaders Meet event on the ground in Australia, a huge thank you to everyone that came and contributed to a brilliant learning environment over the course of two days. With the event centring around the theme of High Performance Environments, we sought insight from academia, the arts, and elite sport through a number of different learning principles.<\/p>\n<p>From the sessions, we have lifted out some of our favourite insights from the two days:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s important to always come back to the idea that high performance is a collective endeavour. The quality of connections between people is as important as the quality of individual talents.<\/li>\n<li>Leaders who create high-performing teamwork instil a culture of collaboration, galvanising people across silos behind a shared purpose. They create an environment of psychological safety and trust, where people debate ideas and support each other.<\/li>\n<li>Elite Awareness (in classical music): the cohesion of the orchestra is to find the understanding of not their own part, but the notes of others. The success of the group relies on connection, shared values and unified work. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is looking to generate elite awareness within the group.<\/li>\n<li>Creative Intelligence: use your own creative intelligence. This concept is something that needs to be reinforced all the time or else it disempowers the innate creativity of the individual. The success of an orchestra relies on individual perspectives to work \u2013 \u2018everyone is an artist\u2019 is an aphorism used within the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.<\/li>\n<li>Your greatest value proposition is meaning and purpose, meaning that a sense of meaning and purpose is what people want from their jobs. Ask yourself: what\u2019s important to them and what can you offer?<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t hire people like you: who is going to complement you? In your teams, you need more of what isn\u2019t there or who is going to add to <em>you<\/em>. Consider \u2018culture add\u2019 vs. \u2018culture fit\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>If \u2018belonging\u2019 should be considered as a variable or aid of a high performance culture, how much time in a week do you spend actively prioritising it in your leadership role?<\/li>\n<li>New Generation Talent: the modern leader also needs to create an environment to generate skills they aren\u2019t experiencing in society as easily anymore. They want a coach they can trust, who will push them to optimise themselves, but who is also loving.<\/li>\n<li>Power of Observation: as a coach, your greatest skill is your observation skills \u2013 your players have a pattern of behaviour, so you are looking for those changes. Good coaches observe behaviours and interactions.<\/li>\n<li>Transparency: Google provides access to all of the information, even if you are an intern. Each Friday there was a TGIF with the Founders where you can ask any question you like. This aspect of transparency is incredibly powerful. Can you push to be more transparent? It increases people engagement and buy-in to the organisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are looking for more, the key insights from the first day are <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/leaders-meet-high-performance-environments-the-key-takeaways-from-day-1\/\">here<\/a> and those from the second day can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/leaders-meet-high-performance-environments-the-key-takeaways-from-day-2\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual Roundtables<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leadership Skills Series: Facilitating Great Conversations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our first Leadership Skills Series Session of 2023, we looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/here-are-10-considerations-for-making-your-conversations-great\/\">how our members can build skills to facilitate great conversations within their teams<\/a>. We began the session by asking the members to think of times when they have had good and bad conversations; what made them this way? We then went into some stimulus, providing ten top tips in facilitating great conversations.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Clarify <em>your <\/em>outcomes \u2013 get your own mindset right at the outset<\/li>\n<li>Specify outcomes for each agenda item \u2013 this keeps things on track<\/li>\n<li>Contract \u2013 the \u2018future pace\u2019 approach \u2013 you want people to commit to the collective<\/li>\n<li>Build rapport \u2013 match pace and lead \u2013 get your group onside by matching their mood<\/li>\n<li>Sensory acuity and early intervention \u2013 pay attention to what\u2019s going on<\/li>\n<li>Listen for the unspoken \u2013 always look for the potential elephant in the room<\/li>\n<li>Offer \u2018clean\u2019 summary \u2013 a judgement-free approach with no input from you as leader<\/li>\n<li>Offer \u2018BIFF\u2019 feedback (behaviour, impact, feeling, future) to underpin a non-judgemental, future-focused approach<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge positive intention \u2013 there may not be a positive effect, but this is your starting point<\/li>\n<li>Remember: silence is not commitment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Performance Support Series: The Performance Paradox \u2013 Session 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was session two of our first Performance Support Series of the year, which focused on \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/our-athletes-are-not-always-in-tune-with-their-bodies-but-help-is-at-hand\/\">The Performance Paradox<\/a>\u2019. Across these sessions, which are led by our Performance Advisor and performance expert Dr Meg Popovic, the aim is to explore the trade-offs, and considerations in the quest to win for staff, athletes, and their wider organisation. This series is centred around Transformational Learning Theory: how we learn to transform ourselves and our teams we co-create.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Body\/Disembodiment in High Performance \u2013 accessing the wisdom of the body.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We work in environments where the body is the conduit for excellence. The body is a tuned machine to create outcomes, and often we are individuals that serve the athletes or are service to tuning their bodies to greatness. Sometimes our environments are so cut off from being in tune with the body, and in touch with the feelings of the body.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Auto-Ethnography \u2013 a process and product, an opportunity to explore connections between culture and oneself. Personal experiences and the first-person voice is valued.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What would it be like as an ethnographer to interview your body? Meg explained a process she conducted during her PhD called \u2018innerviews\u2019 to explore the voice of the body. During this process she interviewed her right hip, and imagined if she was teaching her hip, what would she say about this character of the hip because it is often said that in the hip, secrets are held.<\/p>\n<p>Meg then asked the members to have a go at thinking about a part of their body and she asked questions for them to consider to connect with their body in order to explore the inner voice.<\/p>\n<p>Think about part of your body that has an ache or a pain<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>State the area of the body<\/li>\n<li>Describe literally this body part, listing five things.<\/li>\n<li>Think of the texture of the body part<\/li>\n<li>Describe this area as a weather system \u2013 what would the weather report be?<\/li>\n<li>If you were to give it a voice, what would the voice sound like? What would the accent be?<\/li>\n<li>Give that body part a name.<\/li>\n<li>Think and connect with that body part \u2013 ask it, what do you need from me, or what do you need me to know?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Discussion points:<\/p>\n<p>If we imagine more space for athletes to connect with their bodies:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What would it look like?<\/li>\n<li>What would it feel like?<\/li>\n<li>What would have to change?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Where can we create more space for the wisdom of the body to speak to us and for the athletes to access it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Member Case Study: Coach Development at the Australian Institute of Sport by Michelle De Highden &amp; Bill Davoren<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our first Member Case Study of the year provided an opportunity for members to hear from Michelle De Highden and Bill Davoren from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/what-are-you-doing-to-develop-better-coaches\/\">exploring the coach development practice that is having the most impact across the Australian Institute of Sport system<\/a>. They shined a light on their \u2018How\u2019, experiential and social learning as well as posing questions to our members about their own coaching development environments.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the main points from the discussion:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key operating principles<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respect the challenge of coaching<\/li>\n<li>Understand the context of the National Sporting Organisations (NSOs)<\/li>\n<li>Value engagement<\/li>\n<li>Seek collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Pursue alignment<\/li>\n<li>Think bespoke and creative solutions<\/li>\n<li>Underpin with evidence based thinking<\/li>\n<li>Commitment to social &amp; experiential learning<\/li>\n<li>Consider system outcomes<\/li>\n<li>Design thinking methodology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The AIS&#8217;s &#8216;how&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Enhance coach capability through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop and lead<\/li>\n<li>Integrate and organise<\/li>\n<li>Consult and collaborate<\/li>\n<li>Design, create and deliver<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shining the lens on experiential, social learning<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design features are consistent with research showing that most coaches tend to favour informal approaches to learning<\/li>\n<li>Social structures that enable meaningful interactions to take place are a core feature<\/li>\n<li>Better outcomes are typically achieved when programs are continually shaped by the inputs of people for whom the solutions are being sought<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Community Group Calls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our Community Group conversations bring together Leaders Performance Institute members with similar job functions and challenges. This month, three of the groups discussed some current areas of focus in their respective roles and programmes.
