Problem-Solving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A group of Performance Institute members gathered to engage in an afternoon of skill development, case studies and roundtables around the theme of innovation and problem-solving. The idea of the afternoon was to explore key considerations leading to effective innovation and how we can \u2018build the muscle\u2019 to become better problem-solvers and innovators within our own environments. It was an afternoon full of insight, but below are some thinking points that resonated with us most. The quote below which was shared at the start of the day was apt:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the rate of change within an organisation is slower than the pace of change within its external environment \u2013 it will die\u201d \u2013 Jack Welch, former Chair and CEO, General Electric<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is an effective model for problem-solving?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Identify<\/strong> potential problems and opportunities for improvement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Define the problem:<\/strong> seek to understand it. Gather relevant facts and views.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Explore<\/strong> its causes and potential impacts. Explore possible solutions using creative techniques to generate multiple options.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assess<\/strong> these options. Choose the best one, and take it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Action<\/strong> with a \u2018test &amp; learn\u2019 mindset.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Look back<\/strong> and debrief to driving learning and improvement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What about strategies to enhance the chances of coming up with a game-changing idea? We explored five:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Redefine or reframe the problem with alternative goals:<\/strong> how can we think about this problem differently? Think of at least three different ways we could define our goal, to help open up new ways of thinking about the problem.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mind mapping:<\/strong> mapping out the different categories of possible solutions, so we don\u2019t narrow in on one type of solution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step-change thinking:<\/strong> set a very stretching goal, and then think how that could be possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ideal world:<\/strong> describe your absolute ideal outcome. Then ask yourself under what circumstances you would get this?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Related world:<\/strong> key question \u2013 who\u2019s already faced and solved this problem? And what did they do? Learning from others who have addressed a similar challenge. Staying open to insights from outside of our immediate sector.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Virtual Roundtables<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the month of April, members had the opportunity to engage in four virtual roundtables. The topics of focus for this month included: <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/why-ego-can-be-a-good-thing-if-managed-correctly\/\">Managing Egos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/four-tips-to-help-you-measure-impact-in-your-performance-teams\/\">Measuring the Impact of Performance Programmes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/how-to-better-understand-an-athletes-physiological-responses-to-pressure\/\">Performing Under Pressure<\/a> and The Future Learner. Each session was full of rich discussion and insight. For the purpose of this month\u2019s debrief, we\u2019ve focused on some key insights from the sessions focused on The Future Learner and Managing Egos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Future Learner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The group participating in this topic-led virtual roundtable were part of some excellent discussions. As part of the roundtable, we discussed two questions to provoke thought and explore ideas that can be taken back to our respective environments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are some of the differences and similarities you see in how this generation learn?<\/li>\n<li>How are you thinking about the design of your environment to cater for any differences you see or predict will come?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Much of the conversation focused on projecting forward to the future learner and how we can begin thinking about the design of our environments and development of our people to cater for the future learner, whether athlete, staff member or coach. Here are some of the thoughts from the group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The ability to see social cues<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With the influence of social media, will we witness a deficiency in their ability to be aware of social cues in both larger settings and even in one-on-one interactions?<\/li>\n<li>The group shared that in some environments, individuals are mis-reading certain dialogue and shy away from face-to-face communication which will prove even more challenging for interaction and collaboration between staff and other athletes. We expect we may well see gaps in the subtleties of group communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Elevating self-awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We will likely have to shift more strongly towards having conversations around identity.<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;ve grown up in a world where externally through social media and other technology, there&#8217;s expectation that has been casted of what matters and what people value.<\/li>\n<li>However, what we\u2019re beginning to see when peeling back the layers is a kind of established identity on things that can be taken away which will set you up for crisis.<\/li>\n<li>Working with them to elevate their ability to be self-aware is going to be important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Being intentional with creating psychological safety<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helping coaches and staff to be able to connect, communicate and create these environments that have clarity around the message of \u2018we\u2019re here to learn in the environment\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Helping them to create their own values more from the inside out than the outside in.<\/li>\n<li>We need to also be intentional in how to help them learn. We live in a distracted society, so how do we help them receive, retain and recall information when it matters most?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Shifting away from \u2018content dumping\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Historically, learning has come about through traditional workshop settings. Consider open discussions more as a way of driving learning and growth through speaking to other leaders in the room on a given topic so there\u2019s a level of empowerment for involvement.<\/li>\n<li>With the immediacy of content and answers through technology, we will likely have to dive into the weeds with them to help connect the dots and understand what those answers haven\u2019t taken into consideration.<\/li>\n<li>To complement the point above, how can we add value to the learner beyond the information that they have access to? Checking for understanding is also important \u2013 what methods can be used to assist this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Managing Egos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This session was the latest edition of our Leadership Skills Series \u2013 it wasn\u2019t a huge surprise that the topic of \u2018ego\u2019 was a really popular one. Within the session, we sought to provide those on the call ideas and tools that can be taken away to develop this aspect of their leadership arsenal. By the end of the call, there was a consensus that ego can be a good thing, but only if it is managed correctly. Here\u2019s some things to think about:<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to work with your own ego &#8211; what are some of the ways you can keep your ego in check, healthy and appropriate?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support, develop and work with people who won\u2019t feed your ego. Seek them out. Find smart people, with the confidence to speak up, to give you feedback and perspective on yourself and your contribution to the group effort.<\/li>\n<li>Take a moment to reflect on all the people who were part of making you successful.<\/li>\n<li>Thank people publicly for their contributions to what you\u2019ve achieved. Humble leaders are often very forward in thanking and appreciating the role of others in their success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What about working with someone else\u2019s ego? Here are three ways you as an individual can seek to keep it in check:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be \u2018adult to adult\u2019 and assertive. You don\u2019t have to take it just because they give it. For example using this type of language that is clear and direct: \u2018tell me three things you want. OK, here\u2019s three things I want.\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge their positive intentions. Whatever their behaviour, even if you don\u2019t like it at some level, there is positive intention. This approach helps us be empathetic. What are they trying to do?<\/li>\n<li>Capitalise on appetite for improvement \u2013 stretch them. Many high ego people want to succeed, which is something we can capitalise on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, what about working with ego in teams? Here are another three ways the team can seek to keep ego healthy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Openly talk about ego. Look to use it as a force for good. We can start to come to a \u2018deal\u2019 within our team if we address and talk openly about it.<\/li>\n<li>Contract from the outset.
