As you will also have seen, our Virtual Learning Schedule for 2024 is now live so we look forward to seeing you in some of those sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s jump into some top line takeaways from last month\u2019s learnings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual Roundtables<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the month of December, we hosted three virtual roundtables focusing on a variety of different topics including: <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/learning-development-what-are-the-most-effective-strategies\/\">Strategies for Effective Learning &amp; Development<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/here-are-five-high-performance-trends-to-look-out-for-in-2024\/\">High Performance Trends for 2024<\/a> and the final session of our Performance Support Series looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/we-know-debriefs-are-important-but-can-you-say-you-do-them-well\/\">Performance Planning<\/a>. The discussions raised some interesting reflections and ideas for those who took the time to engage in the discussions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do we make learning more effective?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This session was our penultimate virtual roundtable of 2023, in which we dedicated an hour to reflect on the frequently discussed theme of learning and development. The aim of the roundtable was to provide a space and platform for members to share best practice and experiences with one another, centred around the theme of learning. As a recap, there were two questions that formed the discussions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What have been the most impactful learning and development strategies you have integrated in your teams?<\/li>\n<li>Reflecting on your own experiences, what have been the most effective learning experiences you have engaged in and why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Below are two key considerations that the group discussed that align to the questions above in helping to drive learning and development across your environment.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Have a clear philosophy and intent<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The effectiveness of your approach to learning and development starts way before the actual practicalities. If you don\u2019t have this philosophy and statement of intent clearly mapped out, it isn\u2019t likely to be effective.<\/li>\n<li>Start off with outlining key principles. Instilling a set of clear principles that sit behind your learning and development work allows you to find the balance between short and long-term focuses. There is a natural tendency in many high performance environments to be reactive, which can minimise long-term growth.<\/li>\n<li>Be intentional, often less is more. There is a vast amount of learning and development opportunity for staff and also athletes, so much so that it can be overwhelming. How much time you are dedicating to it and, perhaps most importantly, how will it drive positive change?<\/li>\n<li>Have a needs-based approach. This is a natural follow on from the point above and will support the intentionality of what you or your team engages in. The key element of the needs-based approach is making sure you are participating in the right stimulus.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a clear commitment to action post-engagement which highlights what you are actually going to do differently or to deepen the quality of that learning?<\/li>\n<li>How do you think about developing an organisational system that facilitates learning and development? A reflection is that learning can often take place in silos and learning isn\u2019t shared organisation-wide. Environments that create a true culture of learning have clear systems and strategies in place to create opportunities for sharing of practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Invest time in peer group opportunities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider a blend of in-house learning and bringing outside expertise in. There was a thread around how you are leaning into the expertise that is already in the building that can sometimes be overlooked. When the time is right, what knowledge from outside of the environment can be welcomed in to provoke thought and challenge thinking? One environment shared that every Thursday an external thought leader is invited to speak to the performance team leaders.<\/li>\n<li>Spending more energy on focused learning versus passive. There was a reflection in the conversations around the amount of passive learning that can take place, whether that be articles, podcasts and other media. This can be valuable, but to shift a change in behaviour, we want to keep learning focused through regular scheduled sessions around key topics and challenges.<\/li>\n<li>Leveraging the power of peer mentoring every month in your environment has seen high levels of effectiveness.<\/li>\n<li>Do you implement opportunities and spaces to be creative that take you away from the temptation of day-to-day delivery?<\/li>\n<li>Encourage cross-departmental projects. We often hear of the challenges of siloed working. The act of encouraging and facilitating cross-departmental projects or learning opportunities has been incredibly impactful in some environments, not only in helping to develop relationships but to also expand knowledge outside of specific teams and disciplines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What trends might come to the fore in 2024?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, our final roundtable of the year provides an opportunity for members to come together to discuss trends and what we might see the following year. Such is the diversity of sport and roles across the Performance Institute, these are always valuable conversations to compare and contrast with those either in similar or different roles to yourself. So what will occupy the group in their thinking next year?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Athlete life skills and development needs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A continued need for young athletes in their teenage years specifically to gain more support and develop specific tools to deal with the pressures of life but also the experience of developing and competing in elite sport.<\/li>\n<li>A big point of discussion was around athlete readiness and, in some instances, being more disciplined in not rushing them through the pathway. On the high performance spectrum, we can be premature in the assumption that athletes meeting performance benchmarks are automatically ready to move but in many examples we see struggles in coping with this transition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The use and influence of artificial intelligence<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where do we start and stop? This was a question suggested in the conversations around how to critically think about the possibilities artificial intelligence can provide \u2013 we need to ensure there are clear boundaries.<\/li>\n<li>If we are to fully utilise the ability the technology gives us, getting the basis of your data infrastructure right is critical before leveraging these sources and innovations to get the best output.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The growth of women\u2019s sport<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Although these developments are hugely positive, there is some nervousness around the trajectory and speed of the growth, in particular the challenges these can pose. It was shared that there is some uncertainty around wages, transfer fees if relevant in that sport, facilities and player support services and what \u2018good\u2019 or the \u2018right\u2019 approach looks like.<\/li>\n<li>There was an extended conversation around support services for players and in particular the optimal performance frameworks for women athletes. To this point, a lot of thinking and structuring has mirrored the men\u2019s game, despite there being clear differences in the profile of the athletes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Upskilling coaches in the use of data<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We are experiencing a wave of younger coaches transitioning into our environments who are digital natives or technology-savvy individuals. There is a gap with some coaches who are less certain around the use and experience of technology and performance metrics.<\/li>\n<li>The real trend of discussion here centred around thinking more explicitly around data visualisation to help coaches resonate with the right points to inform their coaching.
