and there was plenty of thought-provoking content for us to get our teeth stuck into (full account <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/one-small-step-or-one-giant-leap-seven-factors-to-fuel-your-moonshot\/\">here<\/a>). Below are a few snippets that particularly caught our attention:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Four tips for avoiding the \u2018Innovator\u2019s Dilemma\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Innovator\u2019s Dilemma<\/em> is a 1997 book by Harvard Professor Clayton Christensen that explores the tension between sustaining existing products and embracing disruptive innovations. It resonated with Jen Allum, from X, the Moonshot Factory and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, who understand they could easily fall prey to the Innovator\u2019s Dilemma. Onstage, Allum shared their four top tips for avoiding this scenario:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Aim for 10x not 10%<\/strong> \u2013 use \u2018bad idea brainstorms\u2019; practise the behaviours of audacious thinking; put everything on the table.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be scrappy, test early<\/strong> \u2013 reject the social norm of refining; find the quickest way to learn that you\u2019re on the wrong path; have a thick skin and be OK with people thinking you\u2019re wrong and weird.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Build-in different perspectives<\/strong> \u2013 recruit for a growth mindset (high humility, high audacity; people who take risks in their own lives; who think differently and challenge the way problems are solved).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reframe failure as learning<\/strong> \u2013 you can\u2019t solve for success, so track what you do, as failures will support future ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Allum added that X, the Moonshot Factory \u201crewards project shutoffs, dispassionate assessments, and intellectual honesty\u201d in the work they do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to optimise your energy as a leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a leader, strategic thinking is in your remit, but do you ever include protecting your energy as part of the equation? \u201cAn organisation can\u2019t outpace its leaders,\u201d said author Holly Ransom onstage. \u201cSo there\u2019s nothing more important than working on ourselves as leaders.\u201d Here are her thoughts on how leaders should show up each day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Manage your energy, not your time<\/strong>; and build-in moments of \u2018micro recovery\u2019 to support yourself in the moments that matter. We spend too much time in \u2018up-regulation\u2019 and we need to find ways to down-regulate\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Make sure your highest energy moments of the day align with your most important tasks<\/strong>\u00a0so that your return on energy is optimised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Who in your corner is your supporter, sage, sponsor and sparring partner?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Remember: you are the Chief Role Model Officer in your team \u2013\u00a0<strong>make sure you live and talk about the things that help people lead themselves in ways that manage their energy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The biomarkers of a healthy culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Back to the myriad insights gleaned from our June Virtual Roundtables, starting off with the latest segment of our series of learning centred around culture and change. The sessions highlight findings from a recent research project by the Premier League\u2019s Edd Vahid titled \u2018Cultural Hypothesis\u2019. The project examines the key components of cultures that have been able to sustain themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Vahid posits astute leadership as a <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/can-you-be-your-teams-harry-kane\/\">\u2018super enabler\u2019<\/a>. Indeed, as Donald and Charles Sull wrote in the <em>MIT Sloane Management Review<\/em>\u00a0in 2022: \u2018A lack of leadership investment was, by far, the most important obstacle to closing the gap between cultural aspirations and current reality.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some strategies we can consider?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Start with acknowledging the connection between leadership and culture:\u00a0<\/strong>the literature largely points in this direction, with leaders having a fundamental role in supporting the change management process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Identify aligned leaders:\u00a0<\/strong>from there is important to \u2018identify leaders who align with the target culture\u2019 as Boris Groysberg, Jeremiah Lee,\u00a0Jesse Price, and\u00a0J Yo-Jud Cheng wrote in the\u00a0<em>Harvard Business Review <\/em>in 2018.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Honour your existing culture:\u00a0<\/strong>you can too quickly go from point A to point B without taking a moment to understand what the existing culture looks like.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Vahid\u2019s also research reveals that cultural leadership operates on three levels:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Sponsors: <\/strong>senior individuals critical for manifesting the desired culture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Architects:\u00a0<\/strong>these are responsible for designing cultural initiatives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guardians: <\/strong>everyone contributes to safeguarding the culture to varying extents.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Four features of a great debrief<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Effective debriefing skills was the top of conversation for our latest <a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/egos-arrogance-or-vague-expectations-what-is-still-getting-in-the-way-of-multidisciplinary-working-at-your-team\/\">Leadership Skills Series<\/a> session. If you are interested to join roundtable sessions centred around developing your own leadership, there are some great topics coming up around strategy and cohesion you can find on the Member\u2019s Area.<\/p>\n<p>To keep this section punchy, a section of our discussion focused on some top line considerations for what constitutes a great debrief. Are you doing these well in your environments?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Psychological safety<\/strong> and the notion of creating a calm, positive and supportive space. As part of this consideration, set people up to focus on learning, not to be defensive and model your belief in their potential to create great performance. Finally, do everything you can to reduce power differentials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get good at questioning<\/strong>. Use open, non-judgmental questions and a lot of follow up questions. Focus on learning more than results and allow time for reflection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strike a good balance between focus on the positives and areas for improvement<\/strong>. A reminder: we learn quickest by reinforcing what works.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to group dynamics<\/strong> to get the best possible contribution from all individuals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The pathway to better collaboration and multidisciplinary working<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, we wanted to highlight some interesting insights and perspectives from our topic-led roundtable on functioning more effectively as multidisciplinary teams, which is often a very popular topic of interest across the Institute when speaking to many of you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance-institute\/articles\/egos-arrogance-or-vague-expectations-what-is-still-getting-in-the-way-of-multidisciplinary-working-at-your-team\/\">Do check out the complete summary<\/a>. Below are a handful of ideas from members on the call that they feel are currently missing or need to be given more attention in the quest to do this well:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>How are you supporting new leaders in your teams?<\/strong> Often we see those in technical expertise of \u2018tactician\u2019 roles move up to leadership position but lack the requisite skills to lead effectively. The role inevitably changes, so what are you or we doing to help them \u2018lead\u2019 their teams and embed true collaboration?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be intentional with feedback<\/strong>. It was shared that an opportunity is a robust and thoughtful feedback mechanism that have variations in their approach. The idea of thinking about detailed feedback is to support learning on a consistent and ongoing basis within your teams. It always seems to us that high quality feedback seems challenging for our teams, so this may well be an opportunity to explore.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are your standard operating procedures clear<\/strong>? If not, they need to be to support this quest for high levels of collaboration.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Psychological safety and empowerment<\/strong>. How do we\u00a0 empower people more effectively to take targeted risks within their roles, whilst still feeling safe and secure?
