In October, we discussed ‘energy audits’, female health and wellbeing, mental skills and the methods behind effective learning.<\/p>\n \n \n \n

How concerned are you about burnout, both for yourself and for those whom you lead?<\/h6>\n

It\u2019s an ever-pertinent question, whether you hear whispers within your corridors or not, and it is always worth checking in with your people.<\/p>\n

During October, with this in mind, we returned to a memorable presentation delivered by Holly Ransom, author of The<\/em> Leading Edge<\/em>, who spoke at our February Melbourne Sport Performance Summit about \u2018energy audits\u2019 that we can all perform.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Sport Performance Summits, our next London edition<\/a> is just around the corner \u2013 specifically the 13 and 14 November at London\u2019s Kia Oval.<\/p>\n

Speakers include Stuart Lancaster, the Head Coach of the Paris-based Racing 92; John Longmire, the Senior Coach of the AFL\u2019s Sydney Swans; and Anna Warren, the Head of Science & Medicine at the ECB.<\/p>\n

It promises to be another cracker but, if you are yet to reserve your place, get in touch with the Leaders Performance Institute today \u2013 or at least after you\u2019ve perused October\u2019s Debrief.<\/p>\n

This time we posed a series of questions, starting with energy audits, progressing to wellbeing and mental skills, before alighting on learning, performance analysis, and, in a left-field turn, the weather.<\/p>\n

What is an \u2018energy audit\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n

They probably sound grander than they actually are, which is not to diminish their importance.<\/p>\n

When Holly Ransom<\/a> spoke at Melbourne\u2019s Glasshouse in February, she suggested three questions we should all ask ourselves:<\/p>\n

  1. What are your natural high energy moments?<\/li>\n
  2. What are your natural low energy moments?<\/li>\n
  3. How are you currently employing those moments?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Ransom believes people should tackle their most important tasks when their energy is at its highest so that they \u201cget the return on energy they deserve\u201d.<\/p>\n

    She also explained that leaders set the tone for the organisation. She said: \u201cThe most powerful thing that you could actually do for that group of people that you lead is think about how we influence that energy in that moment so we don\u2019t get the contagion of that negative energy running through more of the day or more of the week.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Do you feel guilty for focusing on your wellbeing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    You probably have felt guilty<\/a> at some point and you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n

    Emily Downes, the General Manager of Wellbeing & Leadership at High Performance Sport New Zealand, admitted as much onstage at the Glasshouse.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWe all probably struggle with that at one point in time or another,\u201d she said. \u201cWho else do you need to have on your support crew that helps give you that permission?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Part of the solution is systems and processes that enable people to step away from their desks.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe challenge around this is: are you asking for it?\u201d said Downes. \u201cAre you communicating to your manager what support looks like for you or what you might need to be at your best?\u201d<\/p>\n

    She addressed the leaders in the room directly. \u201cHave you set up systems within your environment to enable people to [step away from their desk]?\u201d<\/p>\n

    In any case, if you get up and go for a walk or a run, what\u2019s the worst that can happen?<\/p>\n

    How effective is your mental skills work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The growing focus on wellbeing is matched by an increased emphasis on mental performance, but in an exclusive column Aaron Walsh<\/a>, a performance coach with the Chiefs and Scotland Rugby, considered whether that emphasis is being translated into effective work.<\/p>\n

    It became a focus of his recent research, with Walsh speaking to 35 head coaches and heads of performance. The project revealed four major shortcomings:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Lack of support from key stakeholders.<\/li>\n
    2. The work often became siloed.<\/li>\n
    3. The provider did not understand the demands of the environment.<\/li>\n
    4. The information presented was often too complex and not relevant to the needs of the athletes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Most teams don\u2019t know where to begin and there is a clear lack of application.<\/p>\n

      He discussed the five approaches open to all teams and encouraged all leaders to ask themselves three questions:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Does your team currently have a mental performance strategy?<\/li>\n
      2. What approach best suits your team and meets the mental demands it faces?<\/li>\n
      3. Are you setting up your providers to be successful and have an impact?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Are you setting your female athletes up to succeed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

        The Sport Wales Female Health & Performance Team are working to address some of the major health and performance considerations that affect female athletes<\/a> from the grassroots to podium potential.<\/p>\n

        Prominent among their concerns are myths around the menstrual cycle.<\/p>\n

        \u201cThere are still female athletes who see it as a positive if their periods stop when they\u2019re training,\u201d Dr Natalie Brown, a Research Associate at the Welsh Institute of Performance Science, tells the Leaders Performance Institute on Teams.<\/p>\n

        \u201cThis is because it\u2019s easier and more convenient; they\u2019ve not got to deal with the symptoms or the bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n

        Yet the impact on their short and long term health, let alone performance, could be significant. \u201cIt\u2019s an indicator that they do not have enough energy for those basic bodily functions.\u201d<\/p>\n

        However, as Brown said, \u201ceven in just focusing on the menstrual cycle you\u2019re ignoring the bigger picture around women\u2019s experiences of sport and how the system that we\u2019ve designed doesn\u2019t enable women to thrive in sport because they\u2019re trying to thrive in a male system.\u201d<\/p>\n

        What are your greatest challenges with performance analysis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Reliability and efficiency are likely to feature prominently, as they did in this recent virtual roundtable<\/a> for Leaders Performance Institute members, but have you considered your job descriptions? Do they adequately set out what your organisation requires, both in terms of filling gaps in skillsets and finding seamless integration.<\/p>\n

        Dr John Francis of the University of Worcester and Dr Denise Martin from Atlantic Technological University in Ireland have conducted research into this space. During the roundtable discussion, they set out recommendations for both organisations and applicants across four areas:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Employer familiarity information<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Organisation:<\/strong>\u00a0outline values and goals, provide infrastructure, staffing and philosophy.<\/p>\n

          Applicant:<\/strong>\u00a0understand the organisation\u2019s goals and how to contribute.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Description of job-related tasks & personal specification<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Organisation:<\/strong>\u00a0list job-specific tasks and required skills; list specific academic or coaching knowledge and software competencies; emphasise evidence-informed processes and the need to understand feedback and learning strategies.<\/p>\n

            Applicant:\u00a0<\/strong>gain clarity on role tasks and responsibilities; highlight relevant experiences in application and determine their fit. Identify areas for personal and professional growth.<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Salary & renumeration<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Organisation:<\/strong>\u00a0clearly present salary bands and rewards.<\/p>\n

              Applicant:<\/strong>\u00a0assess job value and potential rewards.<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Opportunity for advancement<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Organisation:\u00a0<\/strong>detail career progression and CPD activities.<\/p>\n

                Applicant:\u00a0<\/strong>make informed decisions about career path within the organisation; consider your long-term aspirations.<\/p>\n

                Ensuring value capture in applied performance analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n

                Martin and her colleagues have conducted research into value capture in performance analysis and alighted on three key questions:<\/p>\n

                What?<\/strong>\u00a0Organisational capability to generate, curate and translate data to c0-create knowledge and insight.<\/p>\n

                How?<\/strong>\u00a0Skills and contextual intelligence allow practitioners to embed effectively in the performance ecosystem.<\/p>\n

                Why?<\/strong>\u00a0These lead to what Martin calls the \u2018lightbulb moments\u2019 \u2013 where value is added to decision-making processes and contributes to performance.<\/p>\n

                Is yours a good learning organisation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

                Lucy Pearson, the Director of FA Education, believes that learning is too important to take seriously<\/a>.<\/p>\n

                \u201cAs a society, we make a distinction between work and play,\u201d she told an audience at the Kia Oval during the last Leaders Sport Performance Summit. \u201cWork is grown up, it\u2019s serious, it\u2019s important; and play is seen in the adult world as childish, frivolous, a bit inessential, a luxury. But play is the creative process through which we learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

                This comes with a caveat. \u201cPeople can be playful at work, yes, but we need to be thoughtful about what we\u2019re looking to achieve in those learning opportunities. Design is deliberate \u2013 not accidental \u2013 if you want to drive high performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

                As such, FA Education is on a \u201cjourney to design, develop and deliver learning, across a number of different modes, to a range of people who\u2019ve all got different tasks, concerns and priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

                Pearson is mindful, however, that people can\u2019t be compelled to learn. \u201cLearning is up to the learner,\u201d she said. \u201cAll we can do is create the circumstance in which the learning has the best opportunity to happen.\u201d She likened it to classes at school that we either liked or didn\u2019t like. \u201cThe teachers all may have put the same amount of effort in, but it was the all-round environment that you found yourself in, the person leading it, the text that somebody chose \u2013 it all needed to be thought-through on your behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n

                Final thought: how important is the weather in pre-season?<\/strong><\/p>\n

                The popularity of warm weather camps, particularly in the depths of winter, is universal, but what about during pre-season?<\/a><\/p>\n

                Tom Cleverley, the Head Coach of Championship Watford, was intent on taking his team to St George\u2019s Park in Staffordshire in July rather than copying his rivals in going abroad.<\/p>\n

                \u201cYou can guarantee that the weather isn\u2019t going to impact training loads,\u201d he told the Leaders Performance Institute. \u201cSometimes you can go to Spain, Portugal and it\u2019s too hot to get the intensities that you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

                Cleverley was echoed by Tony Strudwick, the Director of Medical at West Bromwich Albion and by Neil Thompson, the Assistant Manager Sheffield Wednesday. Much like Watford, Albion and Wednesday both visited SGP in July to get that desired balance of suitable weather and a refreshing change of surroundings.<\/p>\n

                If you live and work in a temperate zone or even somewhere altogether more sunny, is it something you\u2019ve considered?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n \n \n <\/div>\n
