I actually think we\u2019re almost past that now,\u201d said Tim Cox.<\/h6>\n<h6>\u201cIt feels like change is everywhere all of the time, which means that we need to be as good as we can be, so that we can respond appropriately all of the time. It\u2019s no small ask.\u201d<\/h6>\n<p>Cox, the Director &amp; Lead for High Performance Research at Management Futures, is leading a Skills Sprint Session virtual roundtable for Leaders Performance Institute members on the topic of adaptability.<\/p>\n<p>It is a skill, as Cox explained, that was highly coveted by the coaches and practitioners who contributed to our <a href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fleadersinsport.com%2Fperformance-institute%2Freports%2Fthe-winning-formula-for-the-future-of-performance-sport%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CJohn.Portch%40leadersinsport.com%7Cc4d46339a1a44e6892f808ddfb7b5ede%7C1fe6294574e64203848fb9b82929f9d4%7C0%7C0%7C638943229485642985%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=22oPqZtZ9k5VhVhAznLDa5FuUJZkoArPG%2FmeK053XFo%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Trend Report<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Not that this is anything new. \u201cIt is well known that Charles Darwin did not talk about \u2018the survival of the fittest\u2019,\u201d Cox continued, with reference to Darwin\u2019s 1859 book On the Origin of the Species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe endpoint of Darwin\u2019s research was that it\u2019s not the strongest or the most intelligent of the species that survives, it is the one that is most adaptable to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of 25 minutes, Cox discussed traps that people can fall victim to in pursuit of better adaptability. He also brought into focus the qualities of adaptive leaders and the skills that can aid adaptation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Firstly, those four traps that inhibit adaptation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Operating on outdated assumptions<\/strong>. Look at the decline of \u201990s giants Nokia and Blockbuster: what works today will not always work. As the business author Jim Collins half-joked, \u201conly the paranoid survive\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Being hijacked by emotions<\/strong>. If you\u2019re emotionally affected by the challenge ahead, it can inhibit your response.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Failure to create sufficient buy-in for the change<\/strong>. Sharing the message is one thing, but you have to understand how others feel about it and work with them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overly directive leadership<\/strong>. A crisis may require directive leadership, but not indefinitely. Over time, when people look to take the cue from their leader it reduces autonomy and inhibits adaptability.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Cox then set out the four qualities of adaptive leaders and the skills and tools that support those qualities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. They spot the need for change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cIt is important to actually spot the need for change and not just continue doing what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adaptive leaders\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are able to shift perspective<\/strong>. \u201cAdaptive leaders don\u2019t just sit within their position,\u201d said Cox. \u201cThey can see it from others\u2019 perspectives, whether it\u2019s a stakeholder\u2019s or your competition\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are good at listening<\/strong>. \u201cOur response to challenges to the status quo: how are we receiving them? Are we hearing them or are we just simply emotionally responding and cutting them down in whatever way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conduct regular debriefs and reviews<\/strong>. Cox mentioned both the <a href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fleadersinsport.com%2Fperformance-institute%2Farticles%2Fthe-ooda-loop-evaluation-debriefing-in-the-us-air-force%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CJohn.Portch%40leadersinsport.com%7Cc4d46339a1a44e6892f808ddfb7b5ede%7C1fe6294574e64203848fb9b82929f9d4%7C0%7C0%7C638943229485669386%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Xq%2F%2BR8uNSFQuKa7TSMqTLK8XN76fk8QHS5HcsQ0oiv4%3D&amp;reserved=0\">OODA Loop<\/a> and the STOP framework, the latter of which he outlined:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\" https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/06\/Screenshot-2025-06-20-130527.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many other frameworks. You will have your own,\u201d said Cox. \u201cBut in whatever shape or form, remove yourself and take a moment on the balcony to see things from a different perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scan for assumptions<\/strong>. \u201cWhat we are assuming may not be that useful. Think of an issue you\u2019re currently dealing with and write down eight assumptions you\u2019re currently holding about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cox then invited Leaders Performance Institute members to ask themselves two questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which of these assumptions might be holding me or holding us back?<\/li>\n<li>Which of these assumptions are worth testing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. They are the grandmasters of their response<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThis speaks to calmness but it also speaks to the strategic element and scanning ahead in terms of the decisions that might need to be taken.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adaptive leaders\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plan for contingencies<\/strong>. \u201cThey red team in peace and look for what might happen in the same way that a team will plan for what happens when they go two goals down or receive a red card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Understand that self-care isn\u2019t a luxury<\/strong>. \u201cThey put on their own mask first,\u201d said Cox. \u201cWhat might be your first response that buys you time to then consider a better, wider, more sustainable response?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. They empower people to contribute to the adaptation response<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThis is about understanding ideas from both within and outside the team.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adaptive leaders\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Convene their people and successfully convey the need to adapt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encourage collaboration and gather ideas<\/strong>. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fleadersinsport.com%2Fperformance-institute%2Fpodcasts%2Fi-told-the-premier-league-people-will-not-want-to-work-for-you%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CJohn.Portch%40leadersinsport.com%7Cc4d46339a1a44e6892f808ddfb7b5ede%7C1fe6294574e64203848fb9b82929f9d4%7C0%7C0%7C638943229485687890%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=4tEM1PlL3rS8XE7HZatoJ0O7iO2h5mGJYB4lLkwg7RY%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Invite the outside in<\/a>,\u201d said Cox, citing the words of professor Alex Hill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Test and learn. <\/strong>As Cox put it, they fire bullets before cannonballs. \u201cLet\u2019s test it small and then let\u2019s see if it works; then we can fire the cannonball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. They are adept at leading the change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThis is often where adaptation fails. It\u2019s one thing to spot the change, it\u2019s another to decide your response and empower people to put their mark on it.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adaptive leaders\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobilise people behind the strategy<\/strong>. \u201cKey to this is understanding the roles individuals will play in that strategy,\u201d said Cox. They communicate tangibly what they\u2019ll be doing and what they can expect from the leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Navigate resistance or conflict<\/strong>. \u201cEnabling people to voice their emotions and values.
