How the past in high performance sport can inform the future.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When considering advancements in this space we have seen the impact of:<\/li>\n<li>Data and analysis.<\/li>\n<li>The increase in the amount of information we have.<\/li>\n<li>The way learners are changing.<\/li>\n<li>Motivations and options for coaches.<\/li>\n<li>Immediate results which is impact the way coaches in particular go about their coaching.<\/li>\n<li>Siloed working: now we are beginning to talk more holistically about the athlete than just working in individual departments.<\/li>\n<li>In the past we used to have more generalists, but with more specialisms we have witnessed more siloes. We are now in a situation where the regression is back to the \u2018mean\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re starting to look more at the skills and development in how individuals and teams interact.<\/li>\n<li>We have become more evidence-based through research within our industry, there is the potential to lose the intuitive nature of what we do.<\/li>\n<li>With a lot of coaches, they are leaning more towards data and a reductionist approach to \u2018what is the answer\u2019 \u2013 the answer is incredibly broad and contextual. There is a danger that we are seeking the answer too much, so we do need to make sure we aren\u2019t leaning on this all the time and there is a strong consideration to the coaching intuition.<\/li>\n<li>High performance in the future will probably be data-driven, but not the performance data. It will be that systemic leader looking a little bit further than the performance you see on the field; so data will influence us in a number of different ways.<\/li>\n<li>There is a lot of research around person over player \u2013 it\u2019s also an interesting development in the coaching world in understanding what high performance is and means and how this can affect coaches and wider performance staff.<\/li>\n<li>We will potentially see a shift back to \u2018what matters\u2019 rather than doing something that is just shiny, trendy and new.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. As it relates to organi<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>s<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>ational structure, what are the best strategies for building high-performance teams of the future?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019re definitely seeing a positive shift from siloed working to a more inter-disciplinary, athlete-centric wheel with different specialisms wrapped around the athlete. We\u2019re certainly still trying to figure out how best to work effectively and how to integrate our systems to execute. That\u2019s where we are today, so how do we evolve the structure to create more optimal integration? How do we become more multi-disciplinary than just inter-disciplinary?<\/li>\n<li>The role modelling behaviour of the leadership is one of the most important things you can do. If you role model behaviours and set the climate for collaboration a lot of stuff will just happen that you perhaps wouldn\u2019t have expected to.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve come from an era of strong expertise, so we perhaps have some people leading departments because of their technical expertise over their collaborative ability. There are structural considerations, so when thinking about how we develop our people, we are focusing on collaborative upskilling education over technical upskilling to influence shared language and understanding.<\/li>\n<li>The follow on consideration here is how we recruit, knowing we are all striving for more collaboration and multi-disciplinary working.<\/li>\n<li>In high performance sport we have a plethora of great technicians in their specific domains, but there is a severe lack of leadership skills for the specific role they have gone into. We\u2019re focusing on a lot of simple, softer skills such as building relationships, developing trust, as well as managing up and down \u2013 we\u2019ve looked to support this with a mentoring programme to bridge the gap between the knowledge and application into a practical setting.<\/li>\n<li>We are focusing on the concept that development is more than just player development. So for coach and staff development we are honing in on mindset, knowledge and relationships with the two supporting mechanisms of these being culture and processes.<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about player development, the priorities are technical skills, physiological readiness and cognitive skills and mindset, supported by culture and off-field factors.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of high performance models overlook the impact of coach and staff development on the outcome of the player development process.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of research into leadership in the future suggests flatter structures etc. One key consideration for us is that we can become better at working together as a collective staff, but does that necessarily mean more added value for the athlete?<\/li>\n<li>In leadership roles, there are really three main things: do we have the right people, a good culture and the right strategies? We need to focus more on development of our staff and learning to support the execution of what we do, that\u2019s going to be a crucial component of high performing teams in the future.<\/li>\n<li>We need to move to more flat structures than hierarchies \u2013 networks of teams that are working on different segments of the work can lead to more ownership and autonomy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>3. How do we maximise the integration of our coaching and performance support teams, given the seemingly exponential rise in people involved? How can we do this?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you can integrate the coaches and performance support in practical exercises related to the technical aspects of their work, that drives curiosity and awareness. It\u2019s also important to understand and have knowledge of the backgrounds and journeys of different people.<\/li>\n<li>If you can help identify performance questions as a leader and bring people together through those, you have identified what the shared purpose is and then they can go after it. You need someone to bridge the gap; almost a \u2018coach translator\u2019. Someone who is good at drawing out the performance questions from the coaches and translating that out into the management of the support team.<\/li>\n<li>Projects that align people from different departments to be part of a working group with assigned roles and responsibilities just foster more collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Environmentally there is an opportunity as well. Departments sit together surrounded by data and information relevant to them, can we instead look to bring them out of that environment and put them into different working groups.<\/li>\n<li>Be in their space: look at where the coaches and scientists are etc, if these people are sat amongst each other constantly, this is where social structures in proximity will form.
