Happy New Year one and all – is it still okay to say that on 26 January? Anyhow, the Performance Digest is back and raring to go for 2017. I\u2019ll be sending it to you, our members, every other week from here at Leaders Performance Institute HQ. As always, our aim is to provide your consumable companion to the keenest cutting-edge performance intelligence from around the globe. So what\u2019s happened in the world of performance since we last spoke\u2026?<\/h4>\n
\n

2016: Year of the Underdog<\/strong>
\nSome year, wasn\u2019t it? It wasn\u2019t one to remember in many walks of life, but the list of Cinderella stories in sport seemed to be endless \u2013 Leicester City, Chicago Cubs, Iceland Football, Ireland Rugby, Western Bulldogs, Cronulla Sharks to name but a few. Not to mention Fiji, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Vietnam and Kosovo winning their first Olympic golds. 2016 will certainly be recalled for surprising success stories (and RB Leipzig are already giving it a good go at continuing the trend) so for one last time, take a look back at a year that made sport great again.<\/a><\/p>\n

A further success story of 2016 was Super Rugby\u2019s newest champions, The Hurricanes. We were lucky to have Chris Boyd, the team\u2019s Head Coach, on stage in November discussing how he transformed the team\u2019s culture that consequently led them to victory. He was so good, we made him cover star of Edition 11 of the Performance Journal, where you can also find leading insight from Sir Michael Barber, Ben Ryan, Tara Swart and many more.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fantastic Four?<\/strong>
\nIt\u2019s not uncommon for sports to have dominant superstars who are just that cut above the rest \u2013 LeBron and Steph, or Ronaldo and Messi for example. In tennis, the last decade has been a story of the fantastic four \u2013 Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray. Novak and Andy, sorry I mean Sir Andy, have been on top in recent times, and looked set to battle it out again this year, but both superstars have fallen at the first grand slam hurdle already in Australia. Are we in for a more open season of men\u2019s tennis in 2017? The standard behind the top two is certainly getting better and better.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fighting Fit<\/strong>
\nThe UFC has decided it\u2019s time to evolve their sport. With the announcement of a new HQ opening in Las Vegas in May, they\u2019ve put a state of the art \u2018Performance Institute\u2019 (nice name) at the heart of the new campus. Taking inspiration from the best training facilities around the globe (namely the team in blue from Manchester), it will offer world class support to their athletes whether they training in the octagon, or rehabilitating out of it.<\/a><\/p>\n

But can he do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke?<\/strong>
\nTalking of The Citizens, Pep hasn\u2019t had it all his own way since swapping Munich for Manchester. But is his determination to stick to his own footballing philosophy admirable or arrogant?<\/a> He\u2019s won twenty-one titles in seven years in the other two premier top flight divisions in Europe, and I for one am looking forward to seeing if, and when, he can make it twenty-two.<\/p>\n

Auf Wiedersehen, Nico<\/strong>
\nNico Rosberg won his first (and last!?) world title in Abu-Dhabi, and five days later announced his retirement from the sport. Nothing like going out on top, aye? However, Aki Hinsta, former physician to Rosberg and a not uncoincidental four other F1 champions, deserves enormous credit for how he influenced the sport.<\/a> The drivers that listened to him and embraced his \u2018wellbeing\u2019 outlook will know of his impact. Sadly he passed away back in November, but his legacy will undoubtedly live on, and so it should.<\/p>\n

eSports Evolution\u00a0<\/strong>
\neSports has really made an impact in the performance space in the last year or so. Not only has support flooded in from \u2018fellow athlete\u2019 Michael Phelps<\/a>, \u00a0there\u2019s a new addition to the Rockets front office, with the appointment of Sebastian Park as Director of eSports.<\/a> The team stated, \u2018There are things we know, and things we don’t know. We know the eSports space is valuable, now let’s take time and really figure it out\u2019. Houston FTW.<\/p>\n

Seen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yuvraj Singh, India Cricket. He made it third time lucky after another comeback into the team following his successful battle with cancer. Superb effort.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dan Quinn has led the Falcons to SB51, and much of that he believes is down to the \u2018brotherhood\u2019 culture they\u2019ve created in Atlanta. \u00a0\u201cThis team is so tight. The accountability they have with one another is so strong. They totally rely on one another. This team and this group, I totally trust them.”\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n
