We have used three of four pieces of software to capture this data, but it isn\u2019t efficient and good practice by having to go to each of those platforms separately to find what you want.<\/li>\n<li>We need to know the quality of the data we are looking at if it is going to inform us in decision-making processes. If you are using a number of providers, are you getting the same outcomes from the collection phase? If you aren\u2019t, your data is going to be poor, thus your decision may not be accurate. A lot of organisations are starting to code their own data now, moving away from mass-market organisations. To summarise, we all need to do accuracy validity work on our data to pressure test it.<\/li>\n<li>With bespoke systems and coding you can lose that element of comparability to wider datasets. We admit some of its limitations in quality but we value being able to look across a wider spectrum of leagues to do direct comparisons, even if we know the data isn\u2019t perfect \u2013 there is a challenge around wanting breadth, detail and accuracy.<\/li>\n<li>We are also getting a lot closer to the introduction of AI, which will influence how we code in the future. We expect to see more bespoke data collection in the future rather than larger data warehouses.<\/li>\n<li>We have to sell the why with players and coaches and backup what we are suggesting.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve been doing a lot of work around trying to better assess potential \u2013 we\u2019ve looked at not just our own players in our pathway, but other players across other pathways who have fulfilled potential. We\u2019ve looked to model stats that develop over time, versus those that plateau. This has resulted in looking at physical, tactical and technical development.<\/li>\n<li>Physical doesn\u2019t tend to develop past certain ages, whereas technical and tactical does \u2013 by modelling this, you can profile successful players and see how they develop from there.<\/li>\n<li>To align it to our game model, we\u2019ve worked on a lot on shaping the data by apportioning them into traits. The data we are collating feeds into these traits, which will be modelled on how we would, like that team or individual to play based on our game model and philosophy. We have found this to be much more accessible than a metric such as \u2018shots on target\u2019 which is very specific and not very coach specific \u2013 by grouping and prioritising data such as this within traits, we can start to speak the coaches language better.<\/li>\n<li>We have to make sure we are on the same page from a coaching and analysis point of view, it\u2019s obvious to say that \u2013 but if we are using a number of different analysts and providers who perceive things differently, we get a really clunky process and poor alignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>How to best use data to support and influence coaching?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over the last couple of years we have worked on creating a coach their own dashboard. This dashboard filters out everything they don\u2019t need to see. We are trying to drive their ownership of the data by making it super relevant to their domain.<\/li>\n<li>We have looked at turning the data back on the coaches \u2013 coaches naturally seek a lot of information about their players, but not necessarily about themselves. We map their communication and eye tracking, especially in how that then impacts their communication. This is all about them understanding their coaching brand and how that impacts the players, but also where their biases are.<\/li>\n<li>This exercise helped the coaches understand the role of the analyst and how their role works. Off the back of this, there is a number of data strands that will get captured, but we have up-skilled the coaches to capture those on behalf of the analysts. If the insight they want isn\u2019t part of those core strands, they have to go and clip it themselves.<\/li>\n<li>As part of the Football Association\u2019s coach development programme, they have to learn to code themselves. If you can find a balance between the analysts coding bigger picture thinking and the coaches coding specific elements of the game that they want more insight on in a coherent and aligned manner, that\u2019s a perfect scenario. We could then see an evolution where the analyst becomes more involved in deep-dive questions and the coach takes ownership of coding the basic data.<\/li>\n<li>When we look at the relationship between data and coaching, it\u2019s about preference and progression. We look at data in a simple way, it is a support service \u2013 we have to make our coaches feel supported by it and not bamboozled. Sometimes we need to go back two or three steps to some basic examples to get them on the learning cycle of what they will find valuable. They can then own and drive that process.<\/li>\n<li>As coaches we have to communicate clearly what the data is being driven for. There is a trend in some sports where the players are looking to adapt their game based on what is \u2018trendy\u2019 in the sport at that time, thus negatively impacting their USP. This is why multi-disciplinary approaches are so important, especially when it comes to combining coaching, analysis and psychology.<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself the question, what can\u2019t the data tell you about the sport you are operating in?
