Typically, trials in cricket have historically been done indoors, but with a longer, more stretched out season and constraints around how many people can be in one place at one time, this is providing us with an opportunity to rethink this process.<\/li>\n<li>What have been some people\u2019s approaches to benchmarking? Look at what is observable and not observable, and then work out what we need to go out and find. The assessment needs to take into consideration what has been done in the past and what they are doing in the here and now, but accompanied by the views of the experts who work with players.<\/li>\n<li>When considering benchmarking, do you want a \u2018what it takes to win model?\u2019 Do we know what elite performance is in that sport or format and what the world\u2019s best do? Consider benchmarking and framing within this.<\/li>\n<li>Consideration: are there opportunities for us during this period to better assess players, in particular looking at skills such as leadership or resilience?<\/li>\n<li>We need to think about future proofing more from within our roles and what the future game will look like.<\/li>\n<li>During this period, we\u2019ve really focused on analysing the historical data. In one sport in particular there is a higher drop out rate at a certain age group, so we\u2019ve done some data mining in why that might be happening and how we can influence that.<\/li>\n<li>The process of looking at historical pathway data was also a good exercise to inform what we are currently doing \u2013 giving us the opportunity to evaluate what we are measuring and where we might be able to take particular projects.<\/li>\n<li>A big topic we are currently working on is environment. We are beginning to look at environmental profiling. Sport does sport well and develops athletes well, but we think that the concept of the environment is an untapped opportunity, especially in how to optimise the environment. It\u2019s an area we think will come more to the forefront.<\/li>\n<li>A big consideration is how do we create an environment where everybody understands what is key to an optimised environment? We always say resilience, leadership, responsibility and decision-making are key tenets of a high performing environment, but how can we better educate the players and staff in this? Are we making it more complicated than simplistic?<\/li>\n<li>Is this period an opportunity to do just this? Staff numbers are going to be lower, budgets are going to be smaller and we are thinking more about going back to basics \u2013 as part of this process, could we use this simpler way of working to our advantage to educate and develop an optimised environment because it will be easier to do so?<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic testing of relationships in environments is key but we need to be cognisant of not getting in the way.<\/li>\n<li>This validates the importance of balancing outside of work life and the macro environment; it\u2019s crucial for this to be considered when thinking about an athlete\u2019s journey.<\/li>\n<li>Another consideration for us when thinking about optimising environments is how the current way of working is going to impact that. There are going to be smaller pockets of opportunity to get people together physically, so how can we maximise those interactions?<\/li>\n<li>We need to think about legacy environments and behaviours \u2013 when we get everyone back, we need to make sure we don\u2019t crowbar what we used to do before with the new to create a different package.<\/li>\n<li>There has without question been a lot of benefits for coaches and other staff in having to train and do things differently. Working in smaller groups due to training constraints has been a huge eye-opener for a lot of coaches and the general consensus is that this is something they want to continue with. There has been a lot of progress by using this methodology.<\/li>\n<li>It will come down to how we \u2018stitch\u2019 more remote work and smaller groups back into the wider programme; how this impacts the game is going to be critical. Does this new environment have concrete developmental benefits to the game we are playing? That will be the big question to solve.<\/li>\n<li>In some sports there is going to be less travel resulting in fewer fixtures, so this presents an opportunity for more internal games. This will allow us to work with greater numbers and offer more opportunities for assessment, but we need to ensure that this additional internal training and internal competition doesn\u2019t become compartmentalised from external competition.<\/li>\n<li>Should we be assessing the players even during remote working? We\u2019ve seen them come back in fantastic condition and having positive mindsets, is this an opportunity? Considerations are: what has everyone been through during this period; people will have different circumstances, which we need to be wary of. There is a high performance dichotomy where we try to give the players more and more, yet this period we\u2019ve taken that all away, which has allowed them to grow.<\/li>\n<li>Will we see a shift from more specialists to generalist coaches \u2013 if so, what could the benefits be of that?<\/li>\n<li>With more generalist coaches, we could see players take more autonomy of their own development by bringing in specialist expertise outside of the club.
