Group Communication<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do purposeful and impactful meetings look like when we return? There have been positives and negatives by communicating in this medium. A positive is that everybody asks how they and their family are. On the flip side, having challenging conversations through a screen makes it difficult to pick up on people\u2019s body language.<\/li>\n<li>The reality is that meetings in the future will be people in person and others dialling in from outside. How can we create those situations and environments to be really purposeful? How can we create the right balance between information and challenge?<\/li>\n<li>We need to consider the basic fundamentals of meetings and group discussions: contracting at the start, getting behind the purpose of why this meeting is happening and being clear around the takeaways and actions.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve noticed that communicating via technology has brought about a more relaxed feel with our coaches: they seem more open to sharing ideas and asking questions, but conversely, you can slip away from having focus. If we can find the balance between that openness and structure, we will experience effective meetings.<\/li>\n<li>A consideration with coaches in particular is that some are great at conveying coaching messages through technology and \u2018share screening\u2019 of clips etc, but for others, behind a screen you lose out on their real ability as a coach. It may well be a case of us having to identify which category the coaches fit into to get the most impact if this is something we want to take forward in our programmes.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve witnessed that people\u2019s behaviours have gone to extremes at times: the introverts have become more introverted and vice versa with the extroverts. We need to consider how we can encourage involvement from the introverts when doing meetings via technology, as it\u2019s more difficult than getting that involvement physically.<\/li>\n<li>A big lesson is that we know we can be just as, if not more,effective doing things remotely than just bringing people together all the time. That lesson has been hammered home.\u00a0However, that magic still occurs when people are together so we must be extra cautious not to digitalise everything. Ironically, we\u2019ve understood that people can work remotely and be effective, but we are all craving human interaction, so let\u2019s not hinder that.<\/li>\n<li>A great thing to consider and recap on is Stephen Covey\u2019s four quadrants:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1. What is Urgent &amp; Important<\/p>\n<p>2. What is Not Urgent &amp; Important<\/p>\n<p>3. What is Urgent &amp; Not Important<\/p>\n<p>4. What is Not Urgent &amp; Not Important<\/p>\n<p>Another question and reflection is what will people\u2019s educational development look like going forwards? A lot of learning for individuals has been self-motivated and there seems to have been a surge in people wanting to learn.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Could we benefit from expertise in chairing and running meetings virtually just like we would have someone in our environment supporting and challenging the coach in their approach to communication with athletes and other coaches physically?<\/li>\n<li>Consideration: how can we streamline communication whilst keeping people feeling supported?<\/li>\n<li>Consideration: how can we do this to ensure we are not snowed under through the amount of communication we do and,equally, be effective in your role?<\/li>\n<li>Consideration: how do we not make employees and colleagues feel disenfranchised by streamlined communication? Do we build in longer one-on-one meeting time with people? This medium of communication is more dedicated to the content and they are much more focused, so it can really impact the support element we are trying to convey, despite the wider idea of streamlining general communication. They feel more value through this method.<\/li>\n<li>We can look to champion successes of colleagues and highlight them as an example on a monthly basis.<\/li>\n<li>We have to better understand the communication styles of people and how they perceive ours. We have to match the tools for the individual.<\/li>\n<li>This period has opened up the opportunity for more mentoring. We took our coaches out of their own bubble where there can be narrow focus and blind sports and encouraged them into a bigger bubble with more people,which has resulted in them feeling more valued and having more fulfilment.
