What will the long lasting impact of any significantly positive or negative Covid-related practices be and how these will impact on the future learner?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s been particularly interesting is how our coaches have been exposed to the holistic side of managing athletes. A more holistic understanding and wanting to do this effectively has been something we\u2019ve always wanted to do but have never really done it as well as we potentially could \u2013 the coaches have had forced exposure to good quality holistic development.<\/li>\n<li>This period has legitimised the importance of that holistic viewpoint in a high performance arena and it\u2019s something that we now want to prioritise going forward.<\/li>\n<li>We focused on going after the dual-career skills that we often do not have the time to do \u2013 this process has gone down incredibly well with the coaches. We\u2019ve asked ourselves the question, why is this learning landing now, where it hasn\u2019t seemed to before? The main outcome was the timing of when we originally looked to push it.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Turn poachers into gamekeepers\u2019 \u2013 use those who are proactive in learning and developing themselves whether it is physically, tactically etc.to almost peer pressure those who perhaps do not have that hunger or desire to do the same (use them as role models).<\/li>\n<li>This period has tested our multi-disciplinary approaches \u2013 when we were placed into lockdown, our communication lines were not closed off or lost. We\u2019ve seen a lot of agility in our people and teams.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve seen a lot of creativity around the programmes with the younger talent. Usually when you take things away from them, they become a bit unstructured and uncomfortable at times. That creativity has also impacted their autonomy which we want to make sure we bring back when we get back to training.<\/li>\n<li>In the past we have often looked at adding things through other resources, but now we are learning to question the need force certain things \u2013 what do we really need to prioritise? The lesson here is to continue to reflect and think about enhancing autonomy rather than adding more resource around them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. With a reducing ownership in wider society, how do organisations intend to increase player accountability and ownership?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We are going to work on continuing the autonomy the athletes and staff have gained during lockdown. We are asking ourselves whether our current environment is too comfortable.We think adding in a level of that is less comfortable is good and challenging the younger athletes in particular to come up with new ideas to stay in line with their programmes.<\/li>\n<li>We think we will see the players and staff value what the club does to provide for them more. The environments we create are often so high level it isn\u2019t reality. The knock-on effect of this is that people struggle to adapt to different environments, and the reality of this is also that they will experience different environments. We need to better prepare them for this.<\/li>\n<li>Leadership and communication skills are diminishing, as we are seeing in general society, but the challenge we have is that these are important performance factors.<\/li>\n<li>Consider working in communities of practice again;something that\u2019s come to the fore because of Covid. This considers putting people in peer groups where they take on the responsibility themselves, rather than an approach, which is more one-to-one. We almost want that person assigned to support the development of those in the group to take a step back.<\/li>\n<li>In rugby, we as coaches see ourselves more as facilitators. From a coach\u2019s perspective, we offer them a bit of information but then it is down to them to have conversations around those. As we get closer to game day in rugby, we shift the responsibility of preparation to the athletes. As coaches, we focus more on the action review process after a game.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve been reflecting on Maslow\u2019s Hierarchy of Needs. We are all striving for that \u2018self actualisation\u2019, but the athletes and staff actually have the tools and other layers beneath them to reach that?<\/li>\n<li>The environments we create have had to that level of safety. We\u2019ve perhaps realised that level of safety isn\u2019t at home, but it also isn\u2019t in our environment either.<\/li>\n<li>There is a real simple coaches model of: Education, Application &amp; Support. This should remain an on-going model \u2013 there may be times where you have to move back to education for a period of time.<\/li>\n<li>One of our main principles should be to develop relationships and get to know people outside of the game \u2013 we need to create that safety so that they have somewhere to go. When we think about future learners, we are expecting them to come in and be good and extremely talented, but to get that them a phase of self-actualisation, we need to focus on the environment and relationships to help support them.<\/li>\n<li>We want players to solve problems and make good decisions on the pitch \u2013 are we getting them to do more of this off the pitch? It\u2019s very difficult for them to flick their brains. Resource is an interesting dynamic in this \u2013 with less resource you have to learn to make better choices. With more resource, choice is taken away from them.<\/li>\n<li>We will find out a lot about who can adjust to variability. Over the years we have increased control of preparation and allowed less space for players to express their ownership of their own prep.<\/li>\n<li>The difficulty and our stress is connected with the level of \u2018control\u2019 we want\/like to have on the player &#8211; but we\u2019re moving towards more and more autonomy = responsibility.<\/li>\n<li>Operationally we want a high challenge environment, but we do include some small failures \u2013 especially things our players don\u2019t usually experience.<\/li>\n<li>Do we really have a good grasp and insight into what the individual network\u2019s are like of players and staff in order to better facilitate their learning? We need to work to create better environments for them, whilst also thinking about the reality of the real word.<\/li>\n<li>Do you have coffee conversations built into your schedules? We all want to get to a level of authenticity but it has to be genuine. Relaxed interactions are a way of developing this, but you have to create space for them.<\/li>\n<li>Even after team meetings, do you create time and space after those for conversation in groups?<\/li>\n<li>Consider cultural tightness and cultural looseness: we have to understand the cultures of where people come from, whether that is multi-cultural or even from one country. When we want to create more autonomy, we have to start with understanding their cultural landscapes \u2013 is it tight or is it loose?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>3. The use of imagery over words to help learning in the future. Is there any relevant research that demonstrates optimum meeting\/learning times that align with concentration time frames with athletes?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One thing we do is split the group up and use dice in meetings \u2013 give everyone a number and roll the dice, the person with that number has to answer the question.<\/li>\n<li>We have asked all of our players to fill out the social styles of learning document to garner better insight: Analytical, Driver, Expressives &amp; Amiables.<\/li>\n<li>What we fully understand the demographics behind the athletes \u2013 what is the demographic of the influencers behind the influencers? Do we understand support styles that might be influencing this generation of athletes?<\/li>\n<li>Are our thoughts on shorter attention spans self-perpetuating? We say attention spans are shorter, so we make everything shorter, but if there is something that is really interesting that is longer, we will make time to watch it if it\u2019s highly engaging and relevant.<\/li>\n<li>Is there an escapism piece aligned to this?
