How to effectively integrate staff into a new environment? How do we onboard new staff?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We are perhaps seeing a shift in some sports in relation to recruiting new staff, from previous connection, to what they can actually bring to the table.<\/li>\n<li>We focus a lot on assessment, which in turn provides communication keys. Often when new people come in, it can be difficult for new staff to communicate with others, so we want to have some keys to help to get them outside of their comfort zones.<\/li>\n<li>These assessments consider adopted and natural styles: being able to see how they are in natural settings versus competition\/working environments. This opens the door for good conversations. When you have this intelligence, we are then able to work more holistically when it comes to individual development plans etc.<\/li>\n<li>In the interview process, we create a team of people to be a part of that process from different departments within the organisation to help us get a more all-rounded feel for the individual.<\/li>\n<li>The most important element of any integration is the onboarding process. In the first two weeks, it\u2019s crucial to lean and understand the organisation\u2019s culture. It\u2019s important for new people to spend time talking to different people within the organisation, and not just the sporting side. Do your people really understand what it means to be an employee of this organisation? Once you get into the day-to-day work, it\u2019s very difficult to get out of it, so this process has to come first.<\/li>\n<li>There is a bigger piece here as well \u2013 if a coach goes and another comes in, at least you have that affinity with the organisation and not just the coach of your boss. The connection to the organisation as a whole is so important.<\/li>\n<li>There is a massive opportunity for us in high performance sport to be better at onboarding culturally. Have you considered creating a \u2018course\u2019 within a Learning Management System bespoke to your organisation? It will also give you insight into those who have actively participated in this course and how they have progressed through the documentation.<\/li>\n<li>If your people know who you are and what you stand for, you have a better chance of minimising mistakes in the first part of the journey.<\/li>\n<li>During the pandemic lockdown, we\u2019ve learnt the importance of more one-on-one conversation \u2013 it\u2019s something we can look to incorporate within our integration process as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. Improving integration of young talent into the first team setup.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the more successful academies in European football put their younger talent into the age group above them. If this is something you want to employ, it\u2019s crucial to ensure there is clarity around this in your player development and pathway programme.<\/li>\n<li>If we are sending talent to other environments to enhance their development, we need to ensure that there are similarities in relation to philosophies of the organisation: both the playing model and the organisational behaviours have to be conducive.<\/li>\n<li>If you are sending out talent to gain more experience, do you effectively \u2018critique\u2019 and provide insight into that environment?<\/li>\n<li>With Generation Z athletes, they often crave connection and once you have them physically in your environment, there tends to be a lot of interaction. It\u2019s important to devise practices to generate that connection and interaction earlier in the onboarding process.<\/li>\n<li>Is there an opportunity from working in a more virtual way to influence staff and athletes prior to them coming into the working environment? Can we create more connection now because of communication technology platforms?<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve worked in \u2018pods\u2019 during the lockdown as it is easier to work with smaller groups than one big one. Each pod has a multi-disciplinary approach, with staff from each different department being part of the conversation.
