How will our organisations function differently in the future?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We believe there will be more emphasis on learning. We don\u2019t want our organisation to come back and revert to the way everything was before.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve worked out quickly how to communicate remotely, and I think there\u2019s a lot to learn in how to we can be quicker and smarter in how we communicate across teams.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve learnt that we need to reflect on our practice more. In this moment, it\u2019s the perfect time to make that a mainstay of how we operate. All organisations have done a lot during the lockdown period, so it\u2019s crucial we do reflect and build on this. The key will be keeping the reflection momentum going even when things become more normalised.<\/li>\n<li>I think we will see a shift and focus into a simplified way of working: what do we really think is worthwhile and where will we get our \u2018most bang for buck\u2019. I think this will make us work smarter and more diligently.<\/li>\n<li>From a returning to training perspective for players, we are going to make to work on re-educating them. From when they left the training facility 12 weeks or so ago, to coming back is going to be completely different. It\u2019s crucial we get that transition right.<\/li>\n<li>People are going to return to work or playing with a lot of enthusiasm. A question we should ask ourselves as leaders is how to try and keep that momentum and build on that enthusiasm.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s going to be a challenge. We have gone from a system of plenty, to a system having a lot less at its disposal. We need to find ways to put a positive spin on this, especially when it comes to working with the players.<\/li>\n<li>We will need to reduce the cognitive load of the athletes and the sensory stimulus that they are getting.<\/li>\n<li>There are evident positives around the growth and ownership from the athletes. In the first 4-6 weeks, we were keen to not give them too much information; there is a case that we need to do something similar the other way around (when they return to the environment).<\/li>\n<li>We are going to realise that there is more psychological fatigue than physical. We need to observe and get feedback on their energy \u2013 if energy is low, we need to consider how to approach that interaction: it would need to be short, sharp and snappy messaging. If it\u2019s at the higher end of the scale, it gives you the opportunity to push a little harder and increase the cognitive load a bit more.<\/li>\n<li>We are getting our coaches uncomfortable \u2013 we\u2019ve had the opportunity to get to see them in different environments and this can really inform us how to think about communicating, developing and working with them in the future.<\/li>\n<li>We are going to allocate \u2018Guardians\u2019. Have someone who is responsible for collating all of the learnings and new ideas from the lockdown. It\u2019s their responsibility to keep all of the good stuff and so we don\u2019t lose the learnings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. How do we re-integrate both staff and players back into the working environment? <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We need to appreciate that everyone will have experienced lockdown in different ways, so we need to create a safe and open environment to have these conversations. That education across the organisation is so important. We need to get a good understanding for others feelings.<\/li>\n<li>A recommendation would to have these conversations before we firm up your return to work plan \u2013 we can\u2019t just assume how people feel and this is how we want things to work, this is a delicate matter which needs a thorough approach.<\/li>\n<li>We need to consider entire team conversations to ensure there is no ill feeling harboured in the workplace. Especially relevant if some people have been furloughed and others that haven\u2019t. Have the open and honest conversations early.<\/li>\n<li>We are looking at this process with a challenge mindset. What is fresh and new that we\u2019ve learnt that we can build into a more creative performance package for our players and staff? We need to empower everyone within our departments to contribute to this as it will naturally be different. We need people to have an opinion to form a good discussion.<\/li>\n<li>This transition is going to be a culture-tester. How is our adherence to our mission and values?<\/li>\n<li>We all have a mission, now things have changed, we need to have open conversations around what that looks like now. How have our values changed now? Within our departmental missions, there will need to be an appreciation of the importance of human and personal connection \u2013 being more attentive to people\u2019s needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>3. The athlete\u2019s perspective: re-education and considering athlete anxiety.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When thinking about anxiety, you have to consider it \u2013 an athlete may not know they have feelings of anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>As practitioners, we need to make sure that we are present and that we are listening. Are you really checking in with people? What do you need and how can I support you?<\/li>\n<li>We have take more control of training than we would normally do \u2013 from an athlete education point of view, it\u2019s been made clear to the athletes that the reason why the coaches are doing this is because of X,Y and Z. It is important to give them a clear understanding around the \u2018why\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Do you know the motivations of your athletes and what they actually need from us? We have really explored this space as we questioned whether we know the internal drivers of our athletes well enough. Some are motivated by others and a team dynamic, which we haven\u2019t had;it\u2019s been a worthwhile exercise to know how to potentially adjust individual and team programmes.<\/li>\n<li>When thinking about motivation, it\u2019s important not to default to the coach as the person who needs to have this conversation. Some athletes respond better other staff members of the multi-disciplinary team, so use them and pick the one who they have the best relationship with.<\/li>\n<li>We need to approach the re-education and understanding of our athletes from an individual point of view.<\/li>\n<li>A successful observation from another sports organisations were the staff talking to a smaller group of players to discuss what they have learnt, been working on and how this will best impact their work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>4. Group Outcomes<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How this period has worked as a culture strength test \u2013 also something we should look to test again when back to the working environment.<\/li>\n<li>Re-framing of our team mission statements \u2013 they will need to be revisited and reconsidered as things will inevitably change.<\/li>\n<li>Use guardians to capture the learnings from the lockdown \u2013 important to not let them disappear when we revert back to the working environment.<\/li>\n<li>Check-in on the cognitive load of the players.<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to be adaptable around what you are planning to deliver, especially when it relates to feedback from the players.<\/li>\n<li>We need to be more proactive than reactive when the players return to training.
