What have we learnt and what do we want to retain?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have operated in a more interdisciplinary fashion, there has been greater interaction across disciplines. There has also been more consideration in the messaging to the athletes, which has been filtered through the coach as the point of contact.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve had greater insight into the players than we ever have before. We often talk about being more holistic in our outlook and truly understanding the individual. This period has given us such a vivid window into the players\u2019lives \u2013 this is something we should try and keep the momentum on.<\/li>\n<li>Online content and learning. We have embraced a lot of the research out there that Generation Z learn differently, we then want to ensure we couple this with face-to-face interactions when we return.<\/li>\n<li>Players have learnt to take more ownership of their programmes. They have been resourceful and adaptable to their circumstances. We want to continue to encourage that ownership.<\/li>\n<li>Within the academy setup, there has been a lot more interaction across the phases and age groups, everyone has had more time to have those conversations.<\/li>\n<li>One consideration and question is: how do we manage this change? Upon reflection, we should have had a more diverse discussion around change at the start of the process.<\/li>\n<li>Have you got guardians for when you do return;how\u00a0are you protecting this change? Who is going to be responsible in making sure that the things we have identified do happen?<\/li>\n<li>Prioritising better,holistic support has been difficult for coaches because of the compromises. This is an area for opportunity as it\u2019s something we perhaps haven\u2019t engaged with well enough. However, this period has enforced holistic development, so now the coaches have a stronger appreciation of how others impact and influence their practice.<\/li>\n<li>This was something they already knew, but feeling and experiencing the value of holistic support during lockdown has provided even more understanding to the benefits.<\/li>\n<li>We want the coaches to keep that level of accountability around holistic support, so us as high performance staff want to see if they keep the momentum when building out future programmes for the athletes.<\/li>\n<li>Getting to know the athletes as people and not just athletes has been powerful. We\u2019ve tapped into their motivations, and what they are.<\/li>\n<li>Some athletes relate to different practitioners, so as long as we are getting to know them better as athletes, it doesn\u2019t matter which member of the inter-disciplinary team they choose to liaise with. We have definitely gained a better understanding of what are the best ways to motivate certain athletes \u2013 it\u2019s proved that some previous assumptions were wrong.<\/li>\n<li>Holistic support forms better foundational relationships, but can be difficult to measure the outcomes \u2013 there can be a different rate of development.<\/li>\n<li>Important to continue to have self-reflection for yourself as a coach or a practitioner. It will be all too easy to get back and slip back into old habits with a busier calendar, so we need to continue our coach development practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>2. Effective change management: balancing core fundamentals and innovation. <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We need a central fulcrum to manage change \u2013 our high performance staff have been doing lots of evaluating and learning across our systems, naturally there is a want to innovate and change. We need to continue to consider the athletes\u2019 needs in all of this and not just \u2018specialist needs\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>There needs to be an element of empathy in how to balance this process \u2013 we need to be clear of the end goal.<\/li>\n<li>We need to have forums where people are comfortable to share their thoughts and ideas, whilst having key decision makers drawing all of the content from disciplines together.<\/li>\n<li>During this period, we have perhaps lost sight of what the goal is \u2013 so that clarity is so important.<\/li>\n<li>We have identified the importance of the sports medicine department to improve performance rather than just recovery and injury prevention etc. We want to change the language and approach around this to be more proactive rather than reactive.<\/li>\n<li>Consider an external sense-check. Have someone who is detached emotionally and physically outside of the day-to-day environment to check and challenge things that we might not be thinking within our departments. You need those critical friends, especially during periods like this to sense-check innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>3. What does a good High Performance environment look like for coaches?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s important to find the balance between the standardisation of the club experience and the autonomy of the coach. We need to give talented coaches the space to express their talent \u2013 if we express how they do their job with an overly formalised approach, it\u2019s not very rewards and they don\u2019t coach as well.<\/li>\n<li>We do however need to be clear on some of the non-negotiables, it\u2019s then how they decide to work around those where they can interpret and bring in their skill as a coach. They should have room to interpret as they deem appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>We need to provide a strong network in relation to coach development where we can create some cultural momentum. Coaching cells can do this, which is an effective way of creating that momentum. If other coaches can see the effects of these, they then don\u2019t want to be left behind.<\/li>\n<li>The best coaches and cultures are driven by personal ownership. By putting on content and providing access to opportunities, the most aspirational coaches commit to those.<\/li>\n<li>Mentoring: having a mentor for the coach that isn\u2019t from the same sport that they are in \u2013 we need to provide an alternate view on their practice. Also having more experienced coaches mentor newer, more inexperienced coaches is a simple but effective method.<\/li>\n<li>Consider coaching cells which support a coach. These will have three or four support staff, of which one would be the lead mentor. Tried to encourage inter-pathway involvement between the coaches.<\/li>\n<li>Learning outside of sport: we should always look at the leaders in other fields of excellence, that relate to the challenges we have. Focus on the current challenge \u2013 within that domain, who is the best available? Be very targeted in your approach is much more useful or else you can feel like a tourist when you visit \u2013 it can be hard to apply.
