World-Class Communication On Team Performance<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Key Themes:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>1. Will there be a shift back to how coaching and leading used to be &#8211; simplicity?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In previous years, people were more generalist than specialist due to small staffing groups \u2013 you were required to pick up other skillsets in order to drive a programme forward.<\/li>\n<li>Have we become too specialist that we have overlooked the basic principles of communication, harmony and human connection?<\/li>\n<li>We have lost our ability to communicate what the metrics and technology can give you, rather than assessing whether they are the right things to have? There has been an acceptance of working with it, rather than making it work for us.<\/li>\n<li>There is even more of a responsibility for multi-disciplines to come together to communicate effectively and share ideas.<\/li>\n<li>We know more about our players and staff than ever before, it\u2019s something we need to keep moving forward. Can we do this at the start of every season, or throughout the season by using different formats to build relationships?<\/li>\n<li>There has been a lot of fractured leadership through this period, but one characteristic of those who have led well has been transparency.<\/li>\n<li>Athletes and staff have had to take a high level of responsibility during this period to remain at the cutting edge. As leaders we always ask how we can generate more ownership from the players and other staff, and this period has allowed that to happen.<\/li>\n<li>As coaches and leaders, our main focus during this period has been: \u2018are you OK and well?\u2019 This has changed the relationship and conversations with them, allowing the athlete to be more open with them and more engaged.<\/li>\n<li>We need to continue to engage, challenge and support athletes and coaches.<\/li>\n<li>Athletes will always remember how you made them feel.<\/li>\n<li>From an academy perspective, we have had much more open conversation with younger talent,talking to them through technological tools in their own home where it has been a safer environment. There has been more transparency and comfort. Reviews in training grounds can be uncomfortable and overly intense for people.<\/li>\n<li>Are we ready for more independent athletes? We as coaches and performance leaders are going to have to adapt to accommodate this.<\/li>\n<li>We have to ask the question of how will we enable them to take more responsibility?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>2. Future of roles within high performance sport \u2013 specific vs. generalist?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We could expect to see a shift towards more experiential learning over \u2018classroom learning\u2019. Do we think we will have to specialise to get in the door or do we think we will need to be able to cover more bases and then specialise after this?<\/li>\n<li>The cross-pollination of experiences are going to become even more important.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes we get in the way of the athlete too much to prove our worth within the environment. Our involvement as practitioners is to stoke conversation \u2013 the challenge for us now is to find out the best balance of this and their self-efficacy of the players.<\/li>\n<li>How about thinking about specialist generalists? One of the biggest challenges we find is that we have specialists with expertise, the ability to integrate with other specialities and coaches is not always a strength.<\/li>\n<li>We could see a trend towards more generalist skills being more sought after. Having the ability to communicate well with coaches and athletes alike. The more specialised skills are becoming more commoditised.<\/li>\n<li>We might be able to source that information in other ways than just having a dedicated person. A harsh reality is that those with specialist skillsets need to be able to deliver them adroitly or they aren\u2019t as useful within a programme.<\/li>\n<li>Years ago, we perhaps assumed that we could bring in a number of specialists and experts, piece them together with athletes and coaches and it would work out successfully \u2013 this method is an out-dated one.<\/li>\n<li>Specialists need to learn more about coaching skills to enhance effectiveness with team members.<\/li>\n<li>We may see a shift where our team members become more generalist, but we look to source specialism through remote and technological mediums.<\/li>\n<li>The future for coaches and leaders could shift more towards conduits. Expertise will still be there and will be expected to grow, we could see that shift where we are the conduit between the athletes and all of that specialism.<\/li>\n<li>As a conduit, it would not just be about knowing what is going on out in the field, but also the relationships and influence to take that information and make it applicable to the athlete\u2019s goals.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s easier to become a specialist now. The way we need to approach this is not seeing this specialism as learning and being able to articulate how to use a particular piece of software as an example, it\u2019s about how to become a specialist in being that conduit around the information you collect and how you relay that back.<\/li>\n<li>There is going to be more focus on specialist roles to be able to provide complete relevance to athletes, as contact time is even more limited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>3. Group Outcomes<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Better relationships have been formed through this pandemic because the focus has been on the person and their wellbeing first.<\/li>\n<li>We are a relationship-based industry.<\/li>\n<li>The person comes before the player. Get that right and you\u2019d be surprised what will follow.<\/li>\n<li>Performance environments = high challenge but higher support.<\/li>\n<li>Put a greater value on face-to-face contact, maintain relationships first and everything else will follow.<\/li>\n<li>People first &#8211; lead with empathy.<\/li>\n<li>Engage, challenge, support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Could you and your team be making better use of your performance metrics?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If so, then the latest Leaders Performance Institute Special Report, <em>Analyse This: Managing Your Metrics<\/em>, will be right up your street.
