What should or shouldn\u2019t we look to maintain going forward?<\/li>\n<li>Returning to play: considerations around player psychology and readiness of the environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Recommended Reading:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/diary-of-a-return-to-play-how-the-nrls-melbourne-storm-and-canberra-raiders-resumed-the-season\/\"><u>EPP Miniseries: Diary of a Return to Play \u2013 How the NRL\u2019s Melbourne Storm and Canberra Raiders Resumed the Season<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/leaders-virtual-roundtable-unpacking-leadership-navigating-through-uncertainty\/\"><u>Leaders Virtual Roundtable: Unpacking Leadership &amp; Navigating Through Uncertainty<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Key Themes:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>1. What will good leadership look like in the short term? What aspects of leadership have come to the fore during this period?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong levels of adaptability. During this period, leadership qualities have moved from looking to provide comfort and certainty, to planning and communication \u00a0&#8211; whilst continuing to operate in uncertainty.<\/li>\n<li>Our leadership team used a decision-making framework: what are the \u2018knowns\u2019 and where do they sit in relation to this framework?<\/li>\n<li>Personal skills: they often get neglected amongst the technical and tactical work within the coaching framework. The concepts of connecting and togetherness have been very prevalent, so it\u2019s how these can be incorporated into a busy coaching schedule.<\/li>\n<li>To do this, we want to continue to use small group conversations and dedicate more time to discuss things, rather than to physically do things. We\u2019ve also learnt that we spend too much time making calls with individuals, whereas we can bringing everyone together through technology, and still have smaller group conversations that way.<\/li>\n<li>The challenge is that due to the small amount of information that is dripping through, we are still tasked with providing clarity and confidence without having the answers. Even when there is nothing to say, you still have to lead by going out there and saying something.<\/li>\n<li>The consistency of your communication is so important, regardless of whether you have information to update your people on or not.<\/li>\n<li>Our people want a sense of reassurance and calmness, with a clear direction of travel. The communication and connection you have with your team is at the heart of it: that is both formal and informal.<\/li>\n<li>Without overloading the communication, we have focused on increasing our communication both from the formal and informal perspectives \u2013 but it is consistent.<\/li>\n<li>We need to be comfortable to say that we don\u2019t have all the answers. There is also a reaction from a leaders point of view to try to control everything, which we\u2019ve found can actually restrain the team \u2013 we have to trust our people to get on with what they do best.<\/li>\n<li>We need to provide them with a connection and a plan, but trust and empower them to lead the environment. We will hold onto this approach as we have seen an improvement in how we communicate and work within the system leaning more towards a decentralised approach than a centralised one.<\/li>\n<li>Being brave: we didn\u2019t want to approach this period as a way of continuing to do the things we had already been doing, but instead look to be brave and explore new opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>There has been an acceptance that not everything can be perfect anymore, despite us in our work constantly striving for perfection. We have learnt that people have become more accepting.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve spoken with and worked on the concept of resilience with our players for a while now, that idea of how to be better at being comfortable with being uncomfortable \u2013 this has actually become prevalent during this period, but from an off-field basis rather than on-field, where we were originally focusing on.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important when the players and staff are back in that we don\u2019t dismiss this period, it\u2019s something we need to make sure we talk about.<\/li>\n<li>How has this made you more resilient? What have you done during lockdown? What other skills have you learnt?<\/li>\n<li>In a typical working week as a coach, you probably spend 50% of your time talking and 50% of your time listening. We have learnt how to listen. 90% of interactions now are listening, but because of this, it has also been difficult to properly read body language that you\u2019d be able to in the physical environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>2. What remote tools can we potentially implement or take forward to enhance communication?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There have been numerous conversations on how we can use debriefing and video sessions via remote platforms to prevent the players and staff having to come in for a couple of hours.<\/li>\n<li>There are both positives and negatives here. As competitors, when you are away from the training facility, you want to be able to switch off, so I think we have to be cautious of associating \u2018work\u2019 with home as well as the training environment.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s finding the balance: a lot of younger staff and athletes have been receptive to this mode of communication and working because it is more natural to them. I think we have to be careful and not completely dismiss it, and rather adapt as coaches and leaders to keep elements of this way of communicating going forwards.<\/li>\n<li>On the other hand, I think there is also a general consensus that a lot of athletes and staff are looking forward to moving away from digital communication because it has come to them in such vast quantity and quickly. Will they value social and physical interaction more?<\/li>\n<li>I think this period has connected people with the sport more. They have missed the interaction with the coaches and each other.<\/li>\n<li>We have more confidence in the technology \u2013 it works. What we have to be cognisant of is how work and home life have merged and there is no distinction.<\/li>\n<li>Because we are more accessible, there is also an expectation for quicker responses. It\u2019s important we continue to consider people\u2019s wellbeing around this concept.<\/li>\n<li>We have to also be careful that we don\u2019t get caught up in all of the new innovative ideas that we\u2019ve heard or come across over the past 12 weeks. There is still a need to evaluate what will have the most impact and ensure that we don\u2019t muddy the waters in any way.<\/li>\n<li>This method of communicating could be a good way to connect the more senior athletes with junior athletes: approach to role modelling.<\/li>\n<li>For coaching and technical delivery, it will remain incredibly difficult, so we do need to be selective.<\/li>\n<li>Athletes in our environment have missed getting feedback. From a training point of view, the players are doing home programmes and filling them in, but the style and quantity of feedback around these isn\u2019t the same.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve empowered the athletes to give us feedback on what they have noticed. When thinking about analysis in high performance sport, it needs to be very concise and we are questioning whether we will get the right level of detail using remote communication tools.<\/li>\n<li>However, this generation of athlete is used to consuming content and analysis in highlight reels and not the full package, so we\u2019ve found an opportunity to challenge the players to go out and observe some footage to then feedback, which has been a good way of creating some new learning.<\/li>\n<li>There is a challenge in how to influence people through technological mediums \u2013 we will struggle to really influence the behaviours the same way we would connecting physically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>3. Returning to play: considerations around player psychology and readiness of the environment<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our \u2018pre-competition training\u2019 is going to be a slim. The social interaction is going to be a lot less than other times, so it\u2019s important we get the balance between hitting the ground running and easing them in: how much detail do we provide them with?<\/li>\n<li>We need to make sure we understand the characters of the players: with some your language can be quite challenge \u2018we don\u2019t want to let each others down when we get back, so we need to make sure we are doing X,Y and Z\u2019 versus \u2018what can we achieve when we get back?\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge what everyone has gone through and don\u2019t underestimate the power of talking through it.<\/li>\n<li>We have organised an exploration phase with our staff and athletes to find out when they are ready to get going again. We need to understand fro a psycho-social point of view where people are at \u2013 we can\u2019t provide a blanket approach to this as everyone\u2019s context will be different.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>4. Group Outcomes<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Challenge thinking and decide what has worked during this period and implement the same going forward.<\/li>\n<li>The art of listening and how to implement that consistently in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Finding balance of getting the most out of time by using digital communication whilst respecting their home privacy \u2013 leaving the training environment is the athletes\u2019 time to switch off.<\/li>\n<li>What to implement when we learn?<\/li>\n<li>Be brave during this time. Try different things and don\u2019t be afraid to fail.<\/li>\n<li>Getting the balance right in how we communicate with our athlete\u2019s and being conscious of the platforms we use.<\/li>\n<li>Understand people\u2019s personal context.
