Lessons Learnt: Team &amp; Individual <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having more free time has been a fantastic opportunity to take the time to review their respective structures, processes and procedures so that they can hit the ground running when everything opens up.<\/li>\n<li>Are we better setup for success than when we first came into the lockdown?<\/li>\n<li>Having this time to review has allowed organisations to look at depth charts of both players and coaches \u2013 we\u2019ve noticed they are quite empty as priorities have been on other things.<\/li>\n<li>We need to give ourselves more time to think on the things you\u2019ve done or want to do. We are so used to being on a cycle of planning the next session, game etc.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve looked at how all roles and departments can contribute towards the wider teams principles.<\/li>\n<li>When is the best time to start building momentum? We don\u2019t want to start too early, especially with the uncertainty around a lot of return to competition. Are we engaging the right amount and in the right way to keep things moving at a consistent pace?<\/li>\n<li>Due to the uncertainty, we\u2019ve been very reactive. With information not being crystal clear with regards to the virus, it has been challenging to disseminate that information in a clear manner.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve learnt a lot about planning in general and the detail you need to go into. Also, do we plan far enough ahead? High performance sport is naturally reactive, but this period has been a real lesson in balancing both the short and long-term.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve noticed some interesting developments with regards to soft tissue injury upon return to training \u2013 the players have almost lost that \u2018battle hardening\u2019 that they have week in week out during normal competition.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the \u2018can do\u2019s\u2019 \u2013 there is a big risk here of being stuck in the short-term thinking of an ever-changing situation. It\u2019s important we try and lift out of that and look beyond the here and now<\/li>\n<li>Take an approach where you focus more on what you can control and where the sport may end up going.<\/li>\n<li>This period is what leadership is all about \u2013 navigating our way through challenges and bringing people along with you. We have tried to be honest and transparent throughout, whilst ensuring that there is a player\u2019s voice throughout in relation to key decision-making processes.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve used the player leadership group to feedback more on our plans and to also scope out the thoughts of the wider playing group more consistently.<\/li>\n<li>We are being cautious that this period does not effect our beliefs and aims on what the athlete of the future in our sport looks like. Instead, we are looking at how we can upskill the players in understanding the game better.<\/li>\n<li>There is a focus on scenario-based training and the creation of a \u2018virtual game\u2019 that we can begin to analyse and evaluate as coaches and players in relation to the game model.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve learnt a lot about staff development. It can be difficult to coordinate everyone to meet physically, and it\u2019s just proven that we have underutilised the technology that has always been available to us.<\/li>\n<li>Continuing to utilise the technology is a brilliant way of developing relationships \u2013 yes, it is better to meet in person but that is not always possible. We\u2019ve noticed that leveraging the technology available to us, we better understand our people, as there\u2019s more regular interaction with those working off-site.<\/li>\n<li>Mobilise others to lead. Sometimes when we run our programmes without realising things can begin to slide towards being more siloed.<\/li>\n<li>There has been a number of lessons those who work in scouting and player development, where we used to rely on travelling to watch players and complete player audits. We have been conducting player audits effectively in isolation so this will allow us to be more flexible in how we approach this process moving forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. How Will We Come Out of the Pandemic Better \u2013 Acting Upon Lessons Learnt<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each discipline to lead the multi-disciplinary team meeting each week. Allow each discipline to have a voice in how they have contributed to the wider plan or objectives of the team.<\/li>\n<li>Often we let each discipline get on with what they need to do, but it\u2019s important for other departments to understand the impact they are having.<\/li>\n<li>After identifying that there are holes in the athlete and coach depth charts within the organisation, we are looking to rectify those, whilst approaching the longer-term, so this isn\u2019t present during the next cycle.<\/li>\n<li>We can work differently but more effectively. We need to continue to embrace the technology. Can we not do CPD events virtually to prevent any issues with travel or time as a simple example?<\/li>\n<li>There is a big opportunity for assessment of where our respective games are going. Doing a lot of scenario and contingency planning has given us a better understanding of where we currently are.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of people have taken advantage of the time for more self-development, but we must continue with this and find ways to incorporate it into the working programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Attendee Takeaways<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To develop virtual games to help decision-making skills and application of principles to scenarios.<\/li>\n<li>Working more effectively using technology and breaking down perceived barriers within the organisation. Important to keep momentum going with self-development and reflection that has been prevalent during this time.<\/li>\n<li>Good to use this time to get to know others better too. This time could help accelerate these relationships, which, in turn could be of real value in the future.<\/li>\n<li>To consider some physical impacts and injuries of returning to training: soft tissue injuries etc.<\/li>\n<li>Considering creating a virtual game, scenario-based coaching to create independent decision makers away from the court or pitch.<\/li>\n<li>Importance of technology in the future, how can we implement what we are doing now into the daily environment to become more efficient?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Could you and your team be making better use of your performance metrics?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If so, then the latest Leaders Performance Institute Special Report, <em>Analyse This: Managing Your Metrics<\/em>, will be right up your street.
