We hope that you are enjoying these interactions with your peers in the network.

To continue the trend from earlier in the year, we want to continue to share with you, our valued Performance Institute Members, what is going on across our different learning interactions as well as the key learnings and challenges being presented across the network. We hope this helps you keep your finger on the pulse of contemporary thinking across the high performance space and provides you with some inspiration to engage with the variety of opportunities on offer through your membership.

So what really stood out to us in April? Here, we outline the key takeaways from across a number of the sessions.

Virtual Roundtables

Three Virtual Roundtables took place. One was a topic-led conversation focused on the theme of ‘Developing Oneself’ that shone a light on where those on the call were looking to develop themselves and how. We also engaged in the final session of our exciting new Performance Support Series session. On this occasion, Leaders Performance Institute Performance Advisor Dr Meg Popovic brought to a close her series ‘Making Wellbeing A Core Component Of Your Organisational Culture’. Finally, we had our first Member Case Study roundtable of the year, led by Rachel Vickery, another Leaders Performance Institute Performance Advisor.

Communication in High Pressure Environments

In this Member Case Study format of our Virtual Roundtables, Rachel, an expert in human behaviour and performance, spoke about communicating effectively in highly pressurised environments.

Here are the five key points that stood out for us:

Rachel was keen to emphasise that irrespective of the arena of performance, whether it be a team sport, individual, or not even sport related, a common factor is the human stress response. It is primal, survival driven, and we all have it.

The strongest energy will determine the vibe. Sometimes that’s not a good thing. Teams will model the behaviour of coaches and leaders within the team, so it’s important to recognise the energy leaders in the team are giving out.

Understand how you show up under pressure. Notice what is happening in your body, can you be aware of it and try to put things in place to adapt? Practise this in low threat / low pressure environments.

Self-talk needs to be true if it’s to be effective. False self-talk undermines your confidence as your brain knows you’re lying. The self-talk needs to be accurate. If it is true and it is earnt that is when you will feel confident.

The trust you need in the pressure moment is earned away from pressure. In pressure moments, most people need to feel like someone has their back, that someone believes in them, and their performance is part of something bigger than themselves. If, as leaders you can instil this into the players and create that trust away from the pressure, you will be able to build a deep connection and work effectively under stress.

‘Developing Oneself: How and What?’

Many of our Virtual Roundtables are focused on how our members get the best out of their athletes, coaches and environments. We’re busy helping others, and can often overlook the time and development of oneself. For this discussion, we created a space for our members to look internally and share insights around what they are focused on development-wise and how they are looking to influence it.

Here are some of the key points which stood out from the discussion:

Creating a learning network was a key discussion point on this roundtable, and the importance of having a mentor or someone to hold you to account, challenge and support you, was extremely valuable.

An interesting provocation was to ask: how do we capture or measure this growth with what we engage in? The answer to this was not straightforward and many felt they hadn’t found the best answer yet, but being able to externalise your internal thoughts was key.

Consider the 70:20:10 approach – how can we get people learning on the job more effectively, then complementing this by working with someone else and, finally, aligning this with a more formal learning environment?

Spend time understanding yourself first. Understand your intrinsic biases, why you think the way you do, as the more you understand your own lens, the more efficiently you can work and the more impartially you can reflect. It’s also useful when understanding how to work with other individuals and appreciate where they are coming from.

Diversity of thought is key. Actively recruit from different sports, education, experience. Take yourself outside of your own area, go off-site, explore other perspectives and experiences.

Be specific and be intentional. So often we go wide and shallow and are too broad, identify something and go narrow and deep into it. Give yourself a time frame and really dive into it, then reflect on how you think it has gone.

‘Making Wellbeing A Core Component Of Your Organisational Culture: Part III’

This was the final session of our new Performance Support Series, which focused on exploring the topic of ‘Making Wellbeing A Core Component Of Your Organisational Culture’, led by Dr Meg Popovic. Thank you to everyone who engaged in this series of learning and, in particular, Meg for providing us with a host of actionable learnings.

In this session we delved into the ‘individual’ phase of Meg’s framework and the matter of emotional intelligence. The key question for this session was ‘what can be created to amplify individual experience and learning of self, profession, and leadership?’ Here is the concept of ‘the edge’, and an exercise we went through that everyone can try.

The concept of ‘edge’

‘The edge’ is the precipice of change. It goes from primary to secondary.

Primary: who we are, our patterns and behaviours, what we currently know about our situation.

Secondary: our goal, dream, something we are aiming for.

Before secondary processes can become the primary (new), the edge must be crossed.

Four points to edges

Emotional: feeling and thoughts around it.

Logistical: getting it done.

Relational: the relationships between people.

Intellectual: is more research and procurement needed?

At the tip of the edge, there are often two main challenges and barriers that block the team, system or individual from going from the primary to the secondary.

Edge: group exercises

Step 1: start from self.

State of change: what’s currently an edge you would like to explore?

Step 2: create the two spaces.

What you know about your current situation?

Envision where you want to go / be / do.

Step 3: get to your edge point.

If you were to discern one of the four points of the edge, which one would it be?

What would the biggest challenge be to get from the primary to the secondary?

Exercise: Coach & Client (in pairs)

Coach: use open access questions to help client process and move over the edge.

Coach: no giving advice or swapping of experiences.

Coach: focused on skill building to improve communication capacity.

Coach: the gift – help colleague find their way and be seen and heard.

Client: be yourself and be present

Powerful or blank access questions

Open dialogue without judgement and assumptions:

What’s happening?

What are you aware of?

What does it remind you of?

What’s trying to happen?

How do you know you’re having that experience? (e.g. anxiety, butterflies, tiredness)

What else?

What’s next?

What happens if you stop?

Leading others: ways to help your team cross the edge

Imagine what’s over there: ‘what would it be like if you tried?’

Cross at a small distance: ‘what’s one small step you can make?’

Kiss the over the edge: ‘I know you can do this’.

Prohibit crossing (to see if it sparks action): ‘I don’t think you should…’ or ‘no definitely not a good idea’.

Honour the person’s primary state: ‘I think you’re doing a really great job right now. You are (saying something specific about that right now)’.

Community Group calls

Our Community Group conversations bring together Leaders Performance Institute Members with similar job functions and challenges. This month, the groups tackled some current challenges they are facing in their respective fields. Below are some headlines and thoughts that came out of some of those discussions:

Change management

Language: change can be perceived as a negative thing, but often it can be incredibly positive. The importance of the language you use is crucial in galvanising those around you to generate buy-in. Instead of ‘change’ what about ‘continuous evolution’?

Inviting people to be a part of the change: this was one of the concepts that resonated most strongly with us. A small invitation to others to participate and help solve challenges or look towards the future can be really impactful.

Create certainty and anchors: letting people anchor themselves to things that are important – you don’t know what they are unless you communicate really well, and poor communication also creates uncertainty. Take the time to learn first. Building good relationships allows you to find those anchors.

Creating a pathway: you might be at the top of a change process, but who have you got at the different stages that can help that flow coming down? Often the decision is made at the top and the communication is for everyone to get on with it – our role is to help people through it. Who are your soldiers and generals in the change? How do you go about working with them to smoothen the transition?

Review & reflect: the change strategy will inevitably ebb and flow. What a lot of organisations don’t do as well is plan and review consistently and continuously as a multidisciplinary team. It’s important to make sure the opportunities to review and reflect are built into the change cycle.

Cultural reviewing

Terms of reference: what does your culture mean in terms of reference? Have clarity to remove any ambiguity that may exist. When we are talking about culture, what are we actually talking about? Is there common consensus in your environments?

Use focus groups: utilising surveys with staff and create a series of focus groups to really unpick what differentiates your culture from others. It’s important to benchmark and identify common features from successful cultures, but what else exists in your environment and how can they be explored further?

Engage externals: reference and sense-check with others outside of your environment to learn from their cultures, but to also have them ‘walk the floor’ to get a flavour of what your environment is like and what are the key things they pick up?

Eliciting honest feedback: this often falls into category of being a negative experience and it comes at the end of a journey, whether that’s a project or even a player being released. How can we better intertwine honest feedback more consistently in our programmes?

Cultural architects: consider this in your pathways and the players within them. Are the senior players giving the less experienced ones a voice?
