Members of the Leaders Performance Institute came from far and wide to discuss the dynamics of coach and player development. We have decided to lean on the insights the wider group shared as part of our practical session. we asked the participants in the room to\u00a0come up with a number of recommendations around how the space of coach and player development needs to evolve. We also engaged in the second session of our exciting new Performance Support Series session \u2013 Leaders Performance Institute Performance Advisor Dr Meg Popovic led the second of a three-part series focused on \u2018Making Wellbeing A Core Component Of Your Organisational Culture\u2019. Finally, we had a Leadership Skills Session on people development. These conversations were full of insight, but we\u2019ve looked to lift our a number of key thinking points for you to mull over.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">State of Play in Player Development<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/leaders-virtual-roundtable-the-state-of-play-in-player-development\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">This topic-led virtual roundtable<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> was an excellent discussion between a diverse group of leaders from a variety of different sports. To kickstart the discussion, we posed the following questions and invited the leaders to share their own insights and experiences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Across your respective programmes, what are you working on\/have identified as key priorities in terms of your player or talent development process? How are you working to influence the above in practice? We\u2019ve identified the points that came through most strongly for us:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"17\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Connectivity:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the importance of the connectivity between the different departments has never been more important. Previously it has been very easy for each specific coach to be focused on their own area and build an idea of how that athlete\u2019s development curve is going. Some teams are trying to increase the connectivity so everyone knows what is going on in that player\u2019s life. If you have an understanding of what the context is around their situation, it will help inform you on how to interact with them and how they respond to different types of coaching.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"17\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Relationships:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in relation to the above, we can\u2019t just expect people to develop this type of relationship on their own, so one of the participants on the call shared something they have created called a \u2018player accelerator committee\u2019. People from every side of the organisation come together on a monthly basis. It is a forum where there are consistent check-ups, which enables a more holistic view of understanding what is going on for the players. What\u2019s the environment? Who are the people who are around that player and helping to influence their thoughts?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"17\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being player-centric:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> try and do this as humanly as possible. Are you looking to understand how your players learn? The athlete needs to be in the centre of their development, and have the ability to tell their own story. It is part of their character development and building their brand; to understand what makes them special.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"17\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Challenge\u00a0and support:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> it\u2019s important to know when it is right to expose players to different environments; and understanding what is actually going to make them a better player. Session two was focused on looking into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leadersinsport.com\/performance\/how-can-you-better-support-the-subcultures-within-your-teams\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">subcultures in the context of interdisciplinary teams<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> \u2013 often, we hear about the challenges of different departments operating in silos. Meg has conducted extensive research on subcultures, and she shared some interesting tips on how exploring and analysing these subgroups can support the overall culture of your organisation.
