If other members of the team can see you empower someone to lead a project or implement a new idea that can have a positive impact on how to foster more creativity.<\/li>\n<li>Having the ability to foster more trust and ownership in your people is the next wave of innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Lessons in Innovation: What are the questions we should be asking ourselves?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Before innovating, we need to ask intelligent questions before we begin this process.<\/li>\n<li>When you have the resources, the hardest thing is to resist bringing all of the different technologies into your environment.<\/li>\n<li>Ask yourself these questions:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>What is the specific problem you are trying to solve with innovation?<\/li>\n<li>What are the specific questions you are trying to answer through innovation?<\/li>\n<li>What are the specific outcomes you are looking to create through innovation?<\/li>\n<li>Then ask yourself: Is technology or an innovative solution the limiting factor in any of these? \u2013 \u2018Are we mowing the lawn whilst the house is on fire?\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><b>Why Innovate: Goals of Innovation in High Performance<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Injury prevention.<\/li>\n<li>Performance optmisation.<\/li>\n<li>Advanced rehabilitation and return to play.<\/li>\n<li>Creating competitive advantages outside of salary cap restrictions.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Innovation in its appropriate place can drive huge competitive advantages for teams\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Applying the Questions and Goals of Innovation to a Scenario: Injury Prevention &amp; Rehab<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Problem<\/b><\/strong>: Prevent muscle injury<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Question<\/b><\/strong>: Why are we getting injuries? What are the risk factors?<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Outcomes<\/b><\/strong>: Mitigate these risk factors<\/li>\n<li>When you have evaluated this process, where does the innovation come in?<\/li>\n<li>The technologies usually come around measurement. Do we have everything at our disposal to support the athlete along this spectrum? Are we prepared for every step along the way?<\/li>\n<li>On this continuum, the innovation happens in the gaps in between. People perform every step highlighted, not technology. It\u2019s important to ask the question:are we prepared to take the next step into the next phase of intensity?<\/li>\n<li>How would this look in practice? What ever stage we are at, the technology and innovation is going to take place around the <strong><b>assessment<\/b><\/strong>. This assessment must be given context around the thresholds of where the athlete has come from and where they are going too. Also the wider context of the team has to be considered.<\/li>\n<li>Following on from this stage, this has to be communicated to the practitioners for <strong><b>intervention<\/b><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The final stage, is where the athlete needs to go out and <strong><b>perform<\/b><\/strong>. This is where we can evaluate and come back to assessment and decide whether we were ahead, behind or on target. This is based on conversations with the athlete and the data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Who Are You Innovating For?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The people in this process are the key to successful innovation, not just yourself. If it doesn\u2019t make sense to them it\u2019s a waste of time. It\u2019s important to portray in a language other people in this process can understand.<\/li>\n<li>Innovation should simplify a practitioner&#8217;s daily processes and not increase their workload.<\/li>\n<li>Context is key. Innovation means different things for different people.<\/li>\n<li>How ready are your people for change?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Group Questions:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Balancing longer-term vision vs. immediate returns?<\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Communicate what the eventual goal will be, but initially boil down the reports into three metrics and a traffic light system for the coaches. The more the coach or other staff become accustomed to the data, the more questions follow and then you are able to have richer discussions around what would be valuable for them to see and know. Opportunity to code their language and put into metric form.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>How do you assess threshold to change?<\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Observe the group when you get into the organisation. Respect that the process takes time and going charging in will do more damage than good. Sit down with everyone, which can help educate you on where people are resistant. Empowering others to come up with solutions and observing how they come through that period will provide you with a better understanding.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Processes around assessing an organisation and where there is need for change?<\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Assess the outcomes that are wanted and what are the current challenges the organisation is facing from an outcomes standpoint. Is the environment conducive towards the outcomes we are trying to create? If it is conducive, both athletes and staff are caught in that flow and it\u2019s hard for them to operate outside of the system.<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>How to communicate with staff who perhaps don\u2019t buy-in as much as others? <\/b><\/strong>\u2013 Find out what is important to them. We have to operate on the assumption that everybody is trying to get the best for the athlete. Important to find out what each practitioners stands for and the outcomes they seek, and can we present some ideas that can help them?<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>How do you on-board and \u2018get players on the bus\u2019 with you?<\/b><\/strong>\u2013 First of all your organisation has to believe in it and it needs to be a part of your culture. If athletes don\u2019t see an impact of what you are doing they aren\u2019t going to buy into it. Organisational buy-in initially is so important. Reinforcement from others they are more used to in the environment is a good way of generating buy-in. Everyone has had a coach and they are often the ones with the most authority within the setting \u2013 if the coach is bought in, generally the athletes will follow. It\u2019s also important to educate them on way you are tracking that particular metric and explain to them \u2018the why\u2019. Always make these face-to-face to allow you to open a dialogue and ask good questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Group Outcomes<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Define threshold and not only with your immediate staff, but with other disciplines.<\/li>\n<li>When implementing new innovation or technology, start with a smaller group setting with regards to your players to educate them on the reasons why.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure when the coach or other members of staff are bought in, they can lead it with the player as well.<\/li>\n<li>Just because we can do something, should we do it? Important to ask yourself what the problem, question and outcome is before implementing.<\/li>\n<li>The on boarding process doesn\u2019t necessarily have to come from the person who has implemented the technology or innovation, it can be from another member of the support staff who perhaps has a better relationship with the athlete to get interaction and buy-in earlier.<\/li>\n<li>Use the off-season as a time to reassess and regroup as looking to implement new ideas and change in-season is challenging.<\/li>\n<li>Capture those moments to tell a story with the data to both your athletes and other staff members.<\/li>\n<li>Understanding the performance question and what you are trying to solve before you start innovating and potentially end up running down a blind alley.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you have all of the fundamentals (Big Rocks) in place before you start to innovate.<\/li>\n<li>A lot of innovation focuses on technology, but an innovation can be an evolution or revolution of something we are already doing. To do that we need that trust and human connection to make it successful.<\/li>\n<li>Emphasis on communication. Recognise who you are talking to and making sure you aren\u2019t just using a bunch of jargon.<\/li>\n<li>Who are you innovating for is a very good question to ask ourselves. Just because it can seem a good idea in isolation, doesn\u2019t mean it will be bought into across the wider team.<\/li>\n<li>If you can\u2019t answer the question of what you are trying to solve, there is no point innovating.<\/li>\n<li>Know your environment. How can we create an environment that encourages creativity and innovation?<\/li>\n<li>The relationship between time and trust. Take time to take a step back and evaluate the opportunity or challenge and ensure there is trust in place before proceeding with the innovation.
