Vision: A nation inspired by Olympic and Paralympic success<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is built around the principle and philosophy of collaboration. This underpins own personal coaching philosophy and also the way UK Sport goes about working with other stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>This vision also reflects the evidence-based practice that UK Sportarticulates: coach-athlete relationships, coach working with a coach developer, or working with a world-class programme or home nation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>Five Pillars That Contribute to <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>UK Sport\u2019s <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>Vision<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The notion of co-creation or shared learning experiences underpins UK Sport\u2019s\u00a0learning development philosophy and how to deliver support to coaches.\u00a0The organisation has placed a\u00a0focus on creating expert but highly collaborative high performing teams in order to best support athletes &#8211; this, it\u00a0feels,\u00a0is a competitive advantage. Thus, there is a desire for coaches and practitioners to align with UK Sport\u2019s sports science and medicine partner, the EIS.<\/p>\n<p>The five principles that define are vision are:<\/p>\n<p>1. Continuously attract talented individuals with diverse backgrounds to broaden the knowledge, experience and expertise of the HP system.<\/p>\n<p>2. Create rewarding and compelling career pathways that attract, motivate &amp; retain expert individuals to support the delivery of HP outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>3. Develop highly expert individuals and teams who operate in an agile, integrated &amp; collaborative way to enable every funded World-Class Programme athletes to achieve their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>4. Drive transformational leadership and management practices, which enables high performance environments to be created and sustained.<\/p>\n<p>5. Further embed a high performance winning culture that is valued &amp; creates inspiring learning environments in which individuals and teams can exceed expectations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Leadership Development Framework<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When devising its leadership development framework, UK Sport placed its emphasis on leadership skills rather than leadership roles; looking at the environment to see how you\u2019re delivering that and your responsibility to others.<\/li>\n<li>There was an organisation-wide belief that everybody has a leadership responsibility that starts with leading yourself; self-directed learning and development.<\/li>\n<li>The aim was to identify four key themes that underpin everything that feeds into the framework:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1. Integrity: what does a leader or coach need to display?<\/p>\n<p>2. Empowerment: leading through others; creating a peer to peer process, non-hierarchical as in the past.<\/p>\n<p>3. Change and adaptability: we recognise the need for all our coaches and leaders to be flexible and adaptable to be able to take the best of their individual style but recognise the opportunity to flex and move in a different direction for the benefit of all.<\/p>\n<p>4. Inspiring: the nation, creating inspirational moments; an impact in wider social agendas (particularly at this time of pandemic).<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>1. Advocacy<\/b><\/strong>&#8211; the creation and utilisation of professional standards. It also links to accreditation. It highlights that coaching is central to the performance ambitions of an athlete. The coach-athlete pairing is at the heart of everything we do. We also position coaching as a profession. Advocating coach development work, demonstrating impact.<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>2. Bespoke<\/b><\/strong>&#8211; identifying problem-based situations and individualise the offer to create experiential learning opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>3. Connect<\/b><\/strong>&#8211; a focus on high performing teams, what they look like, reviewing and developing those. How you align a whole team around what it takes to win. Understanding your performance focus and aligning efforts around that. Also facilitate and sponsor \u2018communities of practice\u2019 \u2013 belief that this must be driven by the participants, who have leadership responsibility.<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>4. Diversity<\/b><\/strong>&#8211; two key components. Generating data around what the workforce actually looks like [ethnography of your working population]\u2026 we want 25% of accredited coaches at Paris 2024 to be female, there are currently 10% &#8211; this initiative is to be launched in September 2020 in conjunction with Sport England.<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong><b>5. Expertise<\/b><\/strong>&#8211; we want to be at the forefront from a research and practice perspective; we want to blend the two as impactfully as we can to inform decision-making around coach development.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Coaching Framework<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For too long the marginal gains mentality has been driven by sports science and medicine &#8211; a controversial point but people are at the heart of everything UK Sport does;and the coach-athlete pairing is fundamental to that. Coaching will be our competitive advantage when other things are equal.<\/li>\n<li>Coaches need to be recognised and technical and relational experts. They have to have real expertise around inter, intra and their own professional skills.<\/li>\n<li>We want to remove the variability of NGB qualifications and create an agreed standard in high performance which makes it easier for us to decide how we\u2019ll going to drive and deliver our development focuses.<\/li>\n<li>Framework influenced by work done at Leeds Beckett around six core components:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1. Understanding self.<\/p>\n<p>2. Facilitating learning and development.<\/p>\n<p>3. Coaching process, practice and context.<\/p>\n<p>4. Strategy and politics.<\/p>\n<p>5. Athletes and athlete development.<\/p>\n<p>6. Coaching curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Coaching Framework: Situational Analysis &#8211; Paris focus \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Identification &amp; employment of future coaches.<\/p>\n<p>2. Lack of depth of understanding of coaching requirements across the pathway.<\/p>\n<p>3. Limited identification of specific coach development needs.<\/p>\n<p>4. Few examples of aligned athlete &amp; coach pathways.<\/p>\n<p>5. Increased demand on coaching resource.<\/p>\n<p>6. Need to better planning around retention &amp; succession planning.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>What is <\/b><\/strong><strong><b>UK Sport\u2019s \u2018<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>DNA<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u2019<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A collaborative way of working with sports &#8211; creating a people development plan, which enables individuals &amp; teams to be the best they can be.<\/li>\n<li>The practice of using individual development plan is in place, with access to a variety of learning and development opportunities, both formal and informal. We want to create a range of different experiences for the coach but identifying the right opportunity for the right person must drive it and that being driven by their individual development plan.<\/li>\n<li>How do we help the coach to apply that learning? We need to take it into their context and we spend time support coaches in the field.<\/li>\n<li>Individual development plans created through individual needs analysis.<\/li>\n<li>The DNA provides the building blocks for how we go about supporting people. A key component is that it\u2019s not an audit; it\u2019s developmental by nature, it\u2019s a peer review and the outcome is owned by the sport.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s a coach and people development focus and attention around recognising opportunities and observations in order to create a development plan.<\/li>\n<li>Ideally we\u2019d embed support; understanding people\u2019s context, the nature of their challenges, understands what\u2019s going on and feedback.
