In the current climate, what are we doing to keep players motivated and conditioned with uncertainty around return to play dates?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Giving players ownership of their own training programmes. In the professional environment, players are told how, what and when to do things, so it\u2019s very much a learning opportunity for them to plan and prepare of what they think works best for them.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve still incorporated agility and plyometric-based drills as part of a portfolio of opportunities to choose from and then they have to report their training diaries back to the Head of Performance for feedback and analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Weekly challenges and guidelines have been set that we want to make sure they hit. The challenges have been both physical and skills-based, as we as a team HIIT class to break up the week but to also add a social element.<\/li>\n<li>Breaking the lockdown period down into three parts. The first phase was to give the players an opportunity for a break from routine and the full rigours of training. Phase two is more geared towards lifting engagement with the players. There\u2019s been a conscious effort to not give too much structure and sport specific information. Once the go ahead for return to play is given, this is where we will ramp that up.<\/li>\n<li>Initially, we loaded them with content first and then started to wind it down a bit, which also got good feedback. The reason for this is that we wanted to hit them hard with content whilst their mode of thinking was still performance-related.<\/li>\n<li>We have now been in lockdown for eight weeks and now our athletes are engaging in what would be a pretty normal training week, bar the technical elements.<\/li>\n<li>In contact sports, it\u2019s important that upon the return to collective training, we need to expose them to that intensity of contact to condition them. It\u2019s hard to do that now in isolation.<\/li>\n<li>Throughout this period, focus on weakness points based on individual profiles. It allowed us to explore the opportunity of exploring things we might not usually have the time to focus on during a regular season.<\/li>\n<li>Focusing on weak points is a more tailored approach rather than generic, so it gave more of a sense of personal and individual support to the athletes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>2. What should the makeup of our performance programmes be upon returning to the normal training environment to ensure we minimise the risk of injury with shorter turnaround time?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The general consensus has been that we will need 3-4 weeks preparation and approaching it as a min-camp \/ pre-season.<\/li>\n<li>We need to focus on being progressive in our approach. Usually in a pre-season period we would push quite hard after a 4-6 week break, but now we are into week eight of the lockdown, a more progressive approach is needed than high intensity from the outset.<\/li>\n<li>We are implementing a three and one-month block, where we are building up, week three being the highest intensity-wise and then the fourth being more of a down week.<\/li>\n<li>A big consideration upon returning to play is the impacts of reactive change in direction. It\u2019s difficult to replicate this when training from home. We will have to monitor this closely when returning.<\/li>\n<li>We have to consider the asymptomatic or symptomatic potential of the athletes becoming sick with the virus. It seems there could be some cardiac involvement, which impacts certain people.<\/li>\n<li>We have to be sensitive to the impacts of the virus, especially cardiac, lung function or any other conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Consider working in two week blocks \u2013 compound the time because the longer you are out the longer it will take to resume to play. This allows you to be more agile to the climate.<\/li>\n<li>Upon a normal return to training, one of the key focuses would be base load training off the field or court, however in this current situation, we will have to sacrifice elements of this for \u2018on court\u2019 training. We will need to up the technical skill elements of training.<\/li>\n<li>There will more than likely be a few tactical changes in our respective sports where the intensity is a bit lower as the athletes look to build their fitness.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important although we are in such a reactive environment right now to keep a long-term view on the periodisation of the athletes with regards to preventing injury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>3. How are others continuing to motivate athletes and staff during this period?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s important to show the athletes that we as performance staff are still engaged and motivated as well. If they see you are investing time and energy in them, you\u2019re more likely to see that run off on them.<\/li>\n<li>Giving players autonomy is without question a great way to influence that motivational piece. A lot of us think that motivation is individual but it isn\u2019t necessarily. Motivation is an environment we put ourselves in as it is heavily reliant on values. Have you created the right environment to keep them motivated?<\/li>\n<li>This period has been a real positive learning curve for the players, especially in self-learning around their own game and preparation.<\/li>\n<li>From an individual sport perspective it\u2019s been interesting to see them pull on their peers more when it comes to training than they normally would.<\/li>\n<li>Consider using the senior players more to share with the wider group about their mindset and how they approach performance. It\u2019s a simple but effective way of creating knowledge share opportunities for other players across the organisation.<\/li>\n<li>How can we make our athletes better people? We\u2019ve implemented simple activities such as cookery classes on how to influence their nutrition and also placing people into randomly-assorted small groups to just allow them to chat about things not related to the sport so they can just interact as people.<\/li>\n<li>Educate players and staff on the exciting or new programmes that are being worked on in the background, try and get their buy-in early and explain how we are trying to get an advantage from it.<\/li>\n<li>Include the athletes in the process more \u2013 check in on anything that they would like to work on more and then hold them to account on that.<\/li>\n<li>We had our players call up elderly season ticket holders to check that they were ok, it was a fantastic exercise to help improve them as people \u2013 it gave them a real positive feeling off the back of it.<\/li>\n<li>Have people from other sports and some from outside of sport to speak to your players for a fresh voice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><b>4. Group Outcomes <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encourage and support increased athlete autonomy with flexible training options.<\/li>\n<li>Challenge athletes by encouraging them to develop a higher level of independence or autonomy.<\/li>\n<li>Using autonomy to keep motivation high &amp; increasing athlete ownership. Providing weekly challenges to keep the athletes engaged.<\/li>\n<li>Try to plan accordingly for different outcomes.
