There’s more to come so keep your eyes peeled through the email communications and the My Account Page. March ushers in our first physical event of the year – a Leaders Meet focused on Coach & Player Development.

To follow on from the first month of 2022, we want to continue to share with you, our valued Performance Institute Members, what is going on across our different products, key learnings and challenges from your peers in the network. We hope this keeps you on the pulse with contemporary thinking across the high performance space and provides you with some inspiration to engage with the variety of opportunities on offer through your membership.

So what really stood out to us in February? Here, we outline the key takeaways from across a number of the sessions:

Community Group Calls

Across our Community Group conversations, which bring together Leaders Performance Institute Members with similar job functions and challenges. This month, two groups embarked on a discovery phase to unearth their priorities for 2022 while the other groups moved into the exploration phase in terms of specific themes and topics. Below are five combined challenges that came from practitioners working in high performance science and another group of performance directors:

Change Management: with new staff coming into the environment, focusing on how departments interact with other disciplines and management. Creating buy-in amongst all stakeholders.

Prioritisation: if you have the right people in the building, you can have lots of ideas – what do we do and prioritise? Where should we put time, money and effort in relation to short-term vs. long-term? It also relates to the balance between systems vs. deliverables.

Burnout & Sustainability: serious consideration for all of us both individually and for our staff. We need sustainability to influence performance – how can we best think about this?

Evaluation of Processes: looking at the deliberate approach to evaluating projects and programmes – how are we integrating learnings effectively back into the programme.

Balancing & Creating a System for Staff Development: considering pathways for this and also the appreciation that coaching doesn’t look the same as it used to. Identify what the pathways look like and synchronising the skills, competencies, integration and onboarding development resources to support them.

What about some more specific topic discussions? For this month, we’ve looked at some interesting considerations that have stemmed from three of our group conversations and the topics they chose to explore in February:

Coach Development Group – Relationship Between Coaching & Psychology

Integration: is sports psychology fully integrated the way it could be in coaching? Perhaps not. It’s still seen as a separate discipline on the side and is more separate than sport science and S&C, which are more aligned to the technical, tactical side. One interesting point of feedback from coaches in football is that they want psychologists embedded in their teams.

Coaching & Psychology Collaboration: when planning a session for the players, the coaches and psychologists stood round a whiteboard, with the psychologist enquiring about what the work is on and how we can dial up certain elements within the session design. In some sports we can see a lot of siloed delivery. Secondly, the psychologist being immersed in the training environment – working with players and coaches about developing and evolving strategies. This is what a good working relationship between the two looks like.

Working with Players: as coaches do we need to also work with the players to help them understand how to receive this support – almost being the mentees of the psychologists work?

Reframing Sport Psychology: should we be thinking about re-badging sport psychology as mental skills? This creates a distinction between sport psychology and clinical psychology. Will this create more clarity on how psychology supports the performance aspects for players and coaches?

Elite Coaching Group – Culture & Group Cohesion

In building group cohesion, having a strong theme or message around the year can have a positive influence.

Find time in the schedules to allow players to have conversations. As a coach, facilitate time and space for conversations to take place. How much time do we give players in being able to get to know each other vs. the technical / tactical components?

We try to avoid the word ‘culture’ and instead focus on environment, which is driven by values and behaviours. If your message is ‘make the main thing, the main thing’, what are the behaviours that align to that? Ensure that those buzzwords are visited all the time, both inside and outside of training. Do you bring values into reviews? We will have a meeting on environment every week.

When trying to encourage a new group to gel or when trying to integrate new talent into the group, try not to clutter the brain(s) of the individual or group. Don’t worry too much about the details around the edge, instead consider what the key strengths we want from that person are? Focus on that and relate them to the key components of your game model.

Virtual Roundtables

Three virtual roundtables took place in the month of February – two topic-led conversations focused on Developing Team Culture and Innovating & Evolving Approaches to Session Design. We also launched the first session of our exciting new Performance Support Series session – Leaders Performance Institute Performance Advisor Dr. Meg Popovic led the first of a three-part series titled ‘Making Wellbeing A Core Component Of Your Organisational Culture’. These conversations were full of insight, but we’ve looked to lift our a number of key thinking points for you to mull over.

‘Making Wellbeing A Core Component Of Your Organisational Culture’

Meg kicked off the first part of our session by getting the group to reflect on two questions and it’s worth thinking about these in your context too: what can be done at an organisational level where wellbeing is often a paradox to performance (when winning is the name of the game and losing costs people jobs)? And how do we create programmes and processes that foster athlete wellbeing and contribute to team success?

This session was a balance of stimulus and experiential learning, so below is a snapshot of some insights Meg shared with us which can be a good benchmark and hopefully get you thinking a little. If you’d like to join the next two parts of this series, you can RSVP via the My Account Page:

Reflecting on Culture

Definition: the word ‘culture’ derives from the Latin root word colere, which means to tend, or to cultivate. The term was originally a process-orientated noun used to describe the growth of something, such as preparing the land and tilling the earth for crops. Within this definition is an understanding that culture requires care and the honouring of knowledge that is passed down between generations.

When you are thinking about culture, consider these two concepts: ‘being’ and ‘doing’. How do people or groups be with oneself and with each other and what do they do to foster the culture?

Defining Wellbeing

Meg’s definition of wellbeing: ‘wellbeing’ is an outcome. It’s a feeling, a knowing, in the space between all tasks and responsibilities. In many ways, wellbeing is the ‘beingness’ of the doing.

How do we know wellbeing exists for our players or staff? These need to be stoked and grown for wellbeing to become an outcome. Our environment needs to allow for:

Emotional safety

Creativity

Mastery of their craft

Feeling appreciated

Freedom to give and receive feedback

‘Developing Team Culture’

This topic-led virtual roundtable was an excellent discussion between a diverse group of leaders from a variety of different sports. Prior to the conversations, we shared some insight we’d gathered from a previous Leadership Skills Series session which was a good consideration for all on the call:

Most efforts to change culture don’t work.

We often see a gap between what we want the culture to be and aspire towards versus what people have as a lived experience.

With this in mind, what were five things that came through strongly for us from the conversations?

We focus a lot of time talking about values and whether they resonate with everybody. What we’ve found to be most positive in how we use values is when you really dig into the operationalised behaviours that sit behind them – they can be really different from group to group. When we allow people to personalise those behaviours on a daily basis, they become the guiding light to the north star rather than everything people cling onto.

The players really feel like they needed to be involved in the process of setting the values and thus the culture – we let them have a say in how and when we trained, how often we trained, when we travel to games. We turned the organisation upside down and it was really important in the players taking ownership of those values.

A consideration is that the values need to really align to the type of culture you are trying to get to. Bringing them to life and operationalising them remains a huge space for development, as a lot of organisations do just end up with those words being on a wall as opposed to what they really mean and embedding them in practice.

Renovation or transformation: if you think about the word ‘transformation’, it can sometimes align to something not coming back, that is why the language is important depending on your contexts. In terms of renovation, it’s more about working to shift and improve the culture – words like ‘transformation’ can sometimes come across as disrespectful. We want to keep positive influence within the environment.

So many organisations put a lot of work and energy into building a culture but by the time it comes to live these values, there’s no energy to embed them in practice.

‘Innovating & Evolving Approaches to Session Design’

This topic-led virtual roundtable discussion was one for the coaches out there – there has been an ongoing theme around the need to create stimulating sessions for the modern athlete or learner. During this virtual roundtable, we explored some of the focuses across different environments. Below are some interesting discussion points that came out of the conversations:

Athlete Empowerment: within the training week, with some constraints, we have allowed the athletes to choose what they want to do on that particular day. The coaches provided some structure which aligned to the wider programme they are working towards, however the manner in which they achieve those outcomes and the makeup of skill elements was left up to the athlete.

Co-Design & Co-Construction: anecdotally within the coaching sphere, a lot of coaches and teams are looking at providing more athlete ownership and exploring ideas around this, but are trying to work out how to do it and what the trade-offs are. There’s certainly a quest for co-design and co-construction.

Finding Balance: an interesting observation from our coaching environment when moving away from a coach-led environment was that a lot of the athletes were lost and weren’t sure what to do. This is an interesting challenge for coaches in how to support them if you are considering this change. We saw friction between what the players wanted in terms of their own style of play in the sessions and preparing for the opponents’ style. A question we asked is how much of your own style is too much?

Keeping Some Element of Control: something to be aware of with player ownership and, in particular, leadership groups, is that they don’t become a militant group where they hammer people – if coaches give players the ownership to take more responsibility it can’t swing so far the other way that it creates a toxic environment. Player empowerment can’t swing so far that the coach then can’t do anything without the say-so of the athlete group – it’s proving really complex for coaching at the elite end of the game. When does empowerment lead to entitlement and control?

We’ve spent some time looking at player engagement and what they want from a session. We got the players to draw up sessions and then we looked for the trends. All of the sessions had elements such as goals, finishing, opposition etc. Around 80 percent revolved around the individual or person and how they could get success or how they could work on particular aspects of their game or a ‘super-strength’.

["post-8180","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry

Inside the Institute – February 2022 - Performance Institute

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/articles/inside-the-institute-february-2022/","url":"https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/articles/inside-the-institute-february-2022/","name":"Inside the Institute – February 2022 - Performance Institute","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/#website"},"primaryImageOfPage":{"@id":"https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/articles/inside-the-institute-february-2022/#primaryimage"},"image":{"@id":"https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/articles/inside-the-institute-february-2022/#primaryimage"},"thumbnailUrl":"https://leadersinsport.com/app/uploads/sites/2/2022/05/GettyImages-1370813021-Inside-the-IN-Feb.jpg","datePublished":"2022-03-04T10:00:00+00:00","dateModified":"2025-12-15T05:11:40+00:00","breadcrumb":{"@id":"https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/articles/inside-the-institute-february-2022/#breadcrumb"},"inLanguage":"en-US","potentialAction":[{"@type":"ReadAction","target":["https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/articles/inside-the-institute-february-2022/"]}]},{"@type":"ImageObject","inLanguage":"en-US","@id":"https://leadersinsport.com/performance-institute/articles/inside-the-institute-february-2022/#primaryimage","url":"https://leadersinsport.com/app/uploads/sites/2/2022/05/GettyImages-1370813021-Inside-the-IN-Feb.jpg","contentUrl":"https://leadersinsport.com/app/uploads/sites/2/2022/05/GettyImages-1370813021-Inside-the-IN-Feb.jpg","width":2040,"height":1093,"caption":"BEIJING, CHINA - FEBRUARY 16: (L-R) Hailey Duff, Eve Muirhead and Jennifer Dodds of Team Great Britain compete against Team China during the Women's Round Robin Session on Day 12 of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games at National Aquatics Centre on February 16, 2022 in Beijing, China.
